UCKFIELD COLLEGE LIFE

January 2019

Holy Cross Carol Service

Beautiful music, extraordinary solos, thoughtful readings and amazing choral pieces filled Holy
Cross Church on Tuesday evening at our Carol Service. It was great to see the music exchange
students from Bismarckschule in Germany work with such great teamwork with our students to
put on such high quality carols and music.

Spiritus Carnival Group shines bright at annual ‘Burning of
the Clocks’

The Winter Solstice was celebrated with great energy and enthusiasm by our Spiritus Carnival
group in Brighton last term. On what was the shortest, darkest day of the year, the streets of
the seaside city bustled with performers, bands and large brightly lit sculptures. Ten students,
two staff and two parent helpers carried two large sculptures made from willow and tissue
paper. The large dripping ‘Dali’ clock (as featured in Uckfield Town Council's official calendar for
2019) was given a makeover with a black trim and our War Horse, named Dorothy in honour of
the school production ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (which the Spiritus students also made stage props
for) was there in full stride.
The parade's theme this year was ‘Remembrance’, which allowed our creative makers to
festoon Dorothy’s body with silhouettes of poppies to remember all animals called into service
for the war effort from WW1 and beyond. Eventually, the students rested on Madeira Drive
after a considerable walk through The Lanes, watched the spectacular fireworks display and
saw Dorothy’s body and legs be thrown onto the bonfire, as is the tradition for the parade! The
students were happy to see part of their work being used in a long-standing tradition for
Brighton, set up by the generous and creative team at ‘Same Sky’ who also help assemble the
Uckfield's ‘Big Day Out’ Parade every July. Don’t worry though - the ‘Dali’ Clock and Dorothy’s
head/neck can be admired in College, currently attached to the balcony next to the Main Hall.

BADMINTON SEASON KICKS OFF…...

Uckfield teams: Ruby Wood, Lily Damazar, Poppy Bissett, Sophie Burchett, Fabian Orde, Arran
Menzies, Toby Burfield, Reuben Burfield, Alice Constable, Stephanie Babb, Alex Pengelly, Oliver

Fake, Tryo Southall, Evan Lester, Zac Ruane, Phoebe Shorter, Tiger innes, Katie Crouch

Our Key stage 3 & 4 Badminton teams took on Heathfield in the first stages of the National
Schools competition on Thursday evening this week.

Heathfield could only field a key stage 3 boys team so our girls rose to the challenge of playing
the boys in a friendly match which they had a go at but couldn’t match up to their experience
and strength. We mixed and matched a bit with our boys and girls combining in some matches
to get as many points as we could off them in a total of twenty ends. This resulted in only 4
wins compared to their 16! Well done to Ruby Wood & Phoebe Shorter taking a game of their
number 1&3 players (with a small head start!)

The Key stage 4 match was a different story with both our teams taking convincing wins!
Admittedly we did have a player from year 12 playing down for us as we were hampered by
losing Lucy Meacher through injury so Heathfield very kindly allowed us to bring in Katie
Crouch, knowing that they were reigning champions with the number 1 under 18 Sussex player
in their team we knew it would be tough, however, we had the depth in numbers and Alice
Constable, Stephanie Babb and Alex Pengelly all played really well to secure a win 5-3.

The boys have been playing regularly throughout years 7-9 and knew what to expect so the
experience of Troy Southall, Oliver Fake, Zac Ruane & Evan Lester lead to a very comfortable
7-1 win. Well played boys!
Despite the losses we had, all teams do actually qualify for the next round which is the County
round to be played in February.

Year 8 and Year 9 Girls' Football Teams' Success

Congratulations to our Year 9 Girls' Football Team who won the North Wealden tournament,
and our Year 8 Team who came second. Fantastic results, well done girls!

Kayleigh Rogers, 8N, donates 10 inches of hair!

We are very proud of Kayleigh Rogers in 8N who has donated her hair (10 inches) to Little
Princess Trust to be used to make a wig for a poorly child.
In the process, she also fundraised £520 for the charity as it costs them between £350-£500 to
create the wig even though they provide the wig Free Of Charge to the child.
Well done Kayleigh, this is an amazing thing to do (and your new hair style looks great!).
