The Big Futures Show 2019
On Tuesday 30 April nearly all of our Year 9 students visited The Big Futures Show in Eastbourne. This
was a great opportunity for our students to meet with a wide variety of further education and training
providers plus prospective employers from across the region, providing them with an invaluable
experience to help with their future career choices. There was a wide range of interactive exhibits and
stalls giving guidance aimed at inspiring tomorrow’s workforce.
The students spent their time at The Big Futures Show visiting over 70 stalls, covering employment
sectors such as Retail & Personal Services, Science, Engineering & Technology, Transport & Logistics
and Public Services. The feedback from the students on the day has been extremely positive, with
most students finding it a very useful, informative and enjoyable experience.
The photos below show some of our students enjoying themselves at The Big Futures Show 2019.

Afternoon Tea Challenge
10A-FT took part in the Afternoon Tea Challenge. The students worked in pairs and had 50 minutes to
produce a three tier Afternoon Tea stand. The only other stipulations they had were to include at least one
flavoured scone and a sandwich.
All of the students hit their time and produced amazing stands. There was homemade bread and jam, all of
which looked and tasted great.
The class had invited members of staff who have made a significant impact on their school life. They were
delighted to be invited and blown away by the students’ talents and obvious expertise.
It was a close call but stand 3 just took it and was awarded the handcrafted Uckfield Food Dept Spoons for
Achievement.
As a teacher I was immensely proud of their efforts but also the teamwork and general comradery, which
ensured that all teams finished within time. Good job everyone!

10C-FT also took part in the Afternoon Tea Challenge and also invited members of staff to come and vote
for their favourite stand. The judging was based on the taste of the scone, selection of dishes included,
overall skill level and also final presentation.
It was a close competition though it was decided that stand 1 had won. Massive congratulations goes to
this team and all the others for taking part.

Uckfield College Art Students’ success in 2 local exhibitions
Uckfield College Art Students have recently enjoyed success showing work in 2 local, but prestigious
exhibitions.
Ethan Harmsworth Causer and Phoebe Newsome in Year 13 were selected to show their paintings in the
East Sussex Arts Fair at High Hurstwood. The show celebrated arts from around the county. 30
professional artists showed their work alongside young people who were selected for their exceptional
talent in art, dance and musical performance.
The Towner Gallery Eastbourne is currently showing a group piece created by our Year 12 Fine Art
students in their bi-annual show ‘Draw Me In’. Students had the opportunity of working with an artist for a
day and subsequently designed and created a sculptural piece commenting on the issues teenagers face
in today’s society. The piece was extremely well received and really stood out in the gallery . The show
continues until June 2nd.
Students involved were:
Rebecca Deavin
Emily Sweet
Elizabeth Robinson
Georgia Archer
Frankie Sowter
Tess Youngman

Georgia Archer’s success in East Grinstead Music and Arts
Festival
Many congratulations to Georgia Archer in Year 12 who took part in the
East Grinstead Music and Arts Festival over the weekend. The standard
is extremely high and attracts competitors from all over the county.
In the 16-18 category she came 1st in musical theatre; singing what the
adjudicator described as an extremely challenging piece for any
performer. She came 3rd in solo acting and
1st in Shakespeare.
Georgia won the Shakespeare Cup for the highest mark in the entire
festival and was given the complete works of Shakespeare as an extra
prize! Fantastic, well done!
Amy Wickens, Year 8, completes The Moonwalk around
London
On Saturday 11th May, Amy Wickens from 8C,
took part in the world famous midnight challenge,
The MoonWalk, around London raising money
and awareness for the Breast Cancer Charity
'Walk the Walk'. Amy was part of a team of 9,
nicknamed 'The Wickens Walkie Talkies' which
included her Mum, Auntie and other Uckfield
College Mums. Amy wanted to do this to support
her Mum who was diagnosed with advanced
Breast Cancer in November 2017.
Amy, was one of only 33 teenagers who took part
in the event of approximately 15,000 participants
aged 13 to 84. Setting out at midnight wearing her
disco-themed decorated bra (a unique trademark
of the event) in only 6 degrees, she courageously
walked 15.1 miles through the night. Many iconic
London landmarks and buildings turned pink to
support the event.
Amy crossed the finish line tired, cold and exhausted at 06.06am on Sunday morning and raised £350 for
the charity. The amount raised in total by 'The Wickens Walkie Talkies' currently stands at £6,001.12 and
donations are still coming in. The event itself has raised almost £3 million.

This is an amazing achievement for someone so young and Amy said it was the most worthwhile thing she
had ever done.
Well done Amy, we are very proud of you!

Uckfield College students attended Charity Model Railway
Exhibition in Haywards Heath
Six students; Jack Carter, Kathleen Holt, Tom Holt, Robert Hutchinson, Jack Jarvis and Adam Manser
attended the Charity Model Railway Exhibition on Saturday 11th May, running their layout “College
Halt”. They were supported by Mr Carter, Mr Holt, Andrew Vaughan, Jane Morris and Keith Harcourt,
plus a number of Uckfield Model Railway Club members.
The layout was much admired by more than 800 members of the public and our students were great
ambassadors for the College. It is a credit to the students that the layout gained another exhibition
invitation; East Grinstead in March 2020. Well done all!

Joolz Earley and Team Shadow are World Champions, again!
Enormous congratulations to Joolz and her cheer-leading team-mates in Team Shadow who hit Zero
on day one and qualified for the finals in first place (hitting zero means they had a clean routine with
no deductions). Day 2 they hit Zero again and became World Champions! The team have made
history in America being the first ever English team to win back to back World Champion Summit
titles.
What they have achieved is incredible and, understandably, they are getting a lot of attention in
Orlando!
