Dear Parents and Carers,
Supporting your child with GCSE Maths or English
Do you sometimes feel that you are not able to help your child with their Maths or English? Do you feel that
these subjects have all changed so much since you were at school?
Do you feel that you didn’t do very well at either Maths or English when you were at school?
Do you feel that your own GCSE, CSE or O level in Maths or English wasn’t a very good grade?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you might like to consider taking a GCSE in Maths and / or
English and you can do that with ACRES (Adult Education).
There are also opportunities to take Functional Skills qualifications in Maths or English too, if you would like to
start at a lower level and then work up to taking GCSE Maths or English the following year.
If you are interested in any of these courses, do please look at the ACRES website. Who knows, you might see
another evening course that you are interested in.
As Chair of the ACRES board, it gives me great pleasure to give our adult learners their GCSE certificates in our
annual award ceremony. I can remember a few years ago, awarding a GCSE Maths certificate to a mother,
whose daughter had been in our Year 11 and they had both revised for, sat and passed the same exam at the
same time!
Yours sincerely,
Hugh Hennebry
Principal

Neuro-Ninja Hero Course - M y name’s Andrew Wright and I used to be Deputy Principal at Uckfield College
where I spent the last 11 happy years. In January I set up Action Your Potential, a small company with a big
mission to teach parents and students all about their amazing brains to help them do better in school and in
life. We run Neuro-Ninja course and, with the support of Wealden Improvement Partnership we’re bringing
one of those courses to parents and carers across Wealden. We’re particularly interested in social justice and
reaching out to the most vulnerable families in our communities which this project does and thank you to
colleagues in the 32 schools across Wealden have shared with me details (after getting GDPR compliant
permission) of the families you’d like invited to these events. We’ve contacted all of them.
We’re running 4 seminars in 3 different school venues across the Weald.
As well as over 60 invited families, we’re opening up these seminars to all parents and students of children
between Y5 and Y11. More information will be sent to school coordinators soon on how parents can sign up
to the seminars in the different venues.
This message is to tell you about a Free Launch Training Event we’re running at a school near you in the next
3 weeks. The Launch Event is open to any interested professional working in a secondary or primary school
across Wealden.
At the Launch event we’ll be explaining how our Neuro-Ninja Hero course works for young people and
parents. The core aim of the course is to give parents and students a deeper understanding of the
neuroscience and psychology of well-being and anxiety and how their own day to day responses can make a
huge impact to both well-being and the level of anxiety they, and their sons and daughters are feeling.
This free event aims to give professionals an overview of these innovative and engaging approaches to
parental and student engagement. We’ll be exploring a common language to explore the concepts of
well-being and anxiety (and the neuroscience underpinning them) so every young person and parent on the
course can take action the very next day to help build well-being as a skill and tackle anxiety.
There are three events locally;
If you’re in Uckfield join us at Rocks Park School 4 – 4:45pm on Monday 23 September;
If you’re in the Heathfield area join us at Parkside Primary School in Heathfield 4 – 4:45pm on Tuesday 1
October to find out more;
If you’re in the Wadhurst area join us at Stonegate Primary School on Thursday 26 September 4 – 4:45pm.
Please sign up here (click on this link.) you’ll receive the slides afterwards. We will collect your email only to
be able to send you the slides after the CPD session and updates on the times and dates of the parent
student seminars.
The human brain is at the heart of every learning act we carry out. By unleashing in young people and their
parents a deep understanding of how their brains work and, particularly what is happening when they’re
suffering anxiety or struggling with their well-being, we can equip them with strategies, tools and activities
enabling them to do the right things to give themselves the best chance of being the best version of
themselves every day.
See you at a Free Launch Event soon and thank you for listening… C lick on the link to hear information about
some exciting Neuro-Ninja Hero Courses coming to parents and students across Wealden during Term 1, 2, 3
and 4 this year.
