UCKFIELD COLLEGE LIFE
February 2020
Oxford and Cambridge University offers
Four Uckfield College students have made it through the highly competitive application process
and received conditional offers to study at either Oxford or Cambridge university in 2020. Lewis
Westwood-Flood hopes to study Human, Social and Political Science at Cambridge; Ellie
Thornely, Education with Psychology at Cambridge; Emily Chevassut, Medicine at Oxford; Alice
Chapman, Natural Sciences at Cambridge. This is a great achievement and a testament to their
hard work and passion for their academic interests.
Sixth form students at Uckfield College who aspire to study at Oxford, Cambridge and the most
competitive universities may join the Sixth Form Erudite group. Erudite meets weekly with the
aim of fostering students’ ambitions to reach the most prestigious academic institutions through
a programme of research, debate and thinking skills. Students are encouraged to explore their
1
'super curricular' interests, conducting their own independent research into areas that interest
them, before discussing their findings with their peers. As well as participating in debates
within Erudite meetings, students also have the opportunity to compete in an inter-sixth form
debate competition with students from Hailsham, Heathfield and Beacon. Another aim of
Erudite is to support those students who aspire to the most competitive universities. The
students receive information from visiting speakers, interview practice and specific guidance on
their applications. This year, four of our Erudite students have received offers of a place at
either Oxford or Cambridge University.
Students find out what it’s like to be part of a trial
A group of 6th Form students were invited to Lewes courts by Her Honour Judge Venn to take
part in a mock trial. The students took on all of the roles in the trial, including witnesses,
barristers and even the judge. The experience helped students to gain a better understanding
of some of the careers available within the legal sector.
Careers Fair
Uckfield College held our annual Careers Fair on Wednesday 12 February and what a bustling
success it was! Nearly 40 exhibitors set up in the hall, with all year groups coming in at break
and lunchtime. During the event our year 10 and year 11 students visited throughout lessons
3 and 4 and picked up information and advice; they also had the opportunity to chat with
people from a wide range of organisations. Our 6th Form students came along during PDT.
Our exhibitors were impressed with the questions students asked and thought the event was
very successful.
Year 8 Football shield success!
On Wednesday the 5th February, our Year 8 footballers came up against a strong opponent in
the form of Buckswood School in round 1 of the Sussex county shield. The boys won 5-3 in
dominant fashion with goals from Charlie Tye (2), Felix Stitt (2) and Leon Weis. Man of the
match went to Ben Morris for a superb midfield performance. The win sets up a round 2 home
game against BACA. Well done to all students involved in what was an impressive team
performance!
Chess News!
Congratulations to Justin Bailey, Freddie Day, Thomas Baggalley and Oliver Christian who
attended the holiday event at the College last Friday, with Thomas winning his year group
medal and Oliver coming second in the whole event; Justin and Freddie both scored 3/6,
Thomas 3.5/6 and Oliver 4.5/6. Their combined performance saw the College once again win
the Top School trophy, so another for the cabinet! Well done all!
Peru Trip
A group of 29 Uckfield students visited Peru over half term. They spent a busy week travelling
to Lima, Cusco and Puno which included seeing Machu Picchu and the floating Islands of Lake
Titicaca. The students were fantastic and immersed themselves in the culture by trying the local
food (even guinea pig!). Well done, it was a life changing experience for all of them!
Year 11 Celebration Trip
Students in Year 11 had a great afternoon
celebrating their recent success in their trial exams.
Five trips were run, taking them either Go-Karting,
to the cinema, Urban Jump, Bowling or Lazer Quest.
Cross County Success for Charlie Wright, 9D
Congratulations to Charlie Wright in 9D who represented Sussex in the South East Schools
Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships on 1st Feb in Essex. He came 26th of 86 runners,
running 4.15km in 15 minutes 2 seconds!
