Uckfield College

News from the Pastoral Teams for Terms 1 and 2

Dear Parents/Carers
We are delighted to be able to share some very good news about the overwhelmingly
positive culture we have established here at Uckfield College regarding student
attitudes, behaviour and attendance. We know the high expectations we have for all
Uckfield College students is leading to excellent academic standards and developing
students who are fully prepared for the demands of further education or employment.
As you will see from the information below, the climate for learning around the college is
outstanding.

Achievement Points during Terms 1 and 2

Achievement points are one of the many ways we celebrate student achievements. They are
given by staff members for high quality homework and classwork, as well as for positive
character traits, including; helping others; showing determination; and overcoming
difficulties.
1426 students have been awarded more than ten achievement points.
1255 students have been awarded more than twenty achievement points.
1010 students have been awarded more than thirty achievement points.
346 students have been awarded more than FIFTY achievement points.

Attendance during Terms 1 and 2

We are very proud to announce that more than 500 students have maintained 99-100%
attendance throughout the two terms. This is setting them up for significantly higher overall
educational achievement.
We have 1140 students with attendance greater than 95% and we are determined to
increase this further during the academic year.

Behaviour points during terms 1 and 2

Positive behaviour in College is a very significant indicator of student academic success and
well-being. We can boast that 1312 of our students have fewer than 10 behaviour points
meaning that most of the time they are completing homework on time and to a high
standard, working hard in lessons, behaving well in social times and wearing their uniform
correctly.
Almost 50% of our students have zero behaviour points meaning: they are always completing
their homework to a high standard; their attitude and behaviour in lessons and social times is
exemplary; and they take pride in their appearance every day.

Please take time to discuss this positive news with your child. If they are part of the majority
with a large number of achievements points, fewer than 10 behaviour points and with high
levels of attendance, please tell them how proud you are of them and how proud Uckfield
College is of them. They are shaping and defining the high-expectations culture of Uckfield
College.

Wishing you a very Happy
Christmas Holiday from the Pastoral

Team.

Year 7 - Key Stage 3

We have been really impressed with the behaviour, engagement and resilience of Year 7
since they have joined the Uckfield College Community. We have seen many examples of
students showing kindness and support to one another, both in and outside of lessons. There
have been other students who have shown great resilience in overcoming their worries
around some aspects of secondary school. Across the year group, our students have been
working hard in their lessons and on their homework tasks. The feedback from the teachers
at the College has been overwhelmingly positive. Additionally, teachers have commented positively
on how our Year 7 students have thrown themselves into a wide range of extra curricular activities.
In the lead up to Christmas we have been especially delighted to see the wonderful performance of
Year 7 students in the Lower School Choir at the recent Carol Concert on Tuesday 17th December.

Form Reps

We had a record-breaking number of applicants for the position of form reps in each mentor groups this
year. The quality of each application letter was incredibly high, with so many of the year 7 students having
experience of being head girl/boy, prefect, peer mentors, sports leaders, anti-bullying leaders and other
extra-curricular experience. This was great to see and those students who were not selected for form rep
positions will be given other leadership opportunities later in the year.

Deeper Learning Day- SPEAK OUT

During Deep Learning Day, Year 9 took part in their second
"Speak Out" day. They spent the day working in pairs or groups
of three to prepare and deliver a speech relating to an area of
prejudice that they had chosen themselves. The topics chosen
included: racism, ageism, gender inequality and homophobia.
The students spent the day learning about strategies and
techniques related to public speaking to help them to present
their chosen issue to their classmates. They also had to plan,
devise and practise their speeches throughout the morning.
During the last lesson before lunch, each group took it in turns
to present their speech to the rest of their peers, with students
voting for a winning group in each class based on criteria,
provided by the English department, of what makes a good
public speaker,.

The winning group from each class then performed their speech in front of the rest of the Year group in the LRC
after lunch, after some excellent specialist coaching by Mrs Roberts and Ms Ford. After all the speeches were
finished, our illustrious judging panel (comprised of Mrs Roberts, Ms Ford and Mrs Marshallsay) decided on the top
three groups, who were then put to a public vote. It was a very close run contest, but the overall winners were
James Moyes and Barnaby Williams, who produced a rousing speech on homophobia, narrowly followed by Amelia
Stonebanks and Lily-Rose White's speech on racism and bullying, with April Owen and Anna Sheriff's speech on
gender equality coming in 3rd place. Overall, the Speak Out Day was in incredible experience for all involved, and
the staff were extremely impressed and proud of how engaged and enthused the students were in the task set
before them. On behalf of the students and myself, I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Roberts and Ms
Ford for organising such a wonderful day for the whole year group. I would also like to thank all of the other
teaching staff who happily helped our students to write their speeches and develop their public speaking skills.

Year 12 Crisis Day

Year 12 spent the day developing their teamwork and enterprise skills in order to
raise money for the homelessness charity Crisis. They began the day with a
thought-provoking assembly about the reality of being homeless in the UK today.
This was followed by presentations from Uckfield Food Bank and Brighton Housing
Trust. Armed with the facts, the students then carried out an array of fundraising
activities, all of which they had devised themselves. Break and lunch turned into
an exciting carnival of tin can alleys, human fruit machines, cake sales,
competitions and even freshly prepared pancakes. The students did a magnificent
job and the grand total raised for Crisis was £815. Huge thanks to Mrs Macmillan
and the RS department for all of the work that went into coordinating the day.

6th Form Charity Fundraising

In addition to Year 12 raising £ 815 for Crisis, this term has also seen some spectacularly impressive
efforts from students and staff to raise money for the mental health charity, Mind. BTEC staff and
students took to the streets of Eastbourne on 23rd November to take part in a 24 hour sponsored
run / cycle, raising over £1200 in the process. Special mention must go to Mrs Alvarez, who kept
going for the entire duration of the event, running 40 miles and cycling 85! Leesha Daniells (Year
13) organised a sponsored fun run for students and staff on November 13th, which raised over
£800. Finally, Lauren Huggett (Year 12) organised a bake sale which raised a further £ 200. Thank
you to all who took part or contributed

Neuro-Ninja Tool-Kit Seminar 4: Through
Anxiety & Beyond

Wishing every parent, carer and student across
Uckfield Schools a wonderful Christmas and Happy
New Year.
Our next seminar is coming up on Wed 8 Jan 6 - 7pm
at Uckfield College. In this seminar we finish our look
at anxiety and the human brain. In this seminar we
turn our attention to social anxiety and the stresses
other people can cause our brains. Don't worry if you
haven't come to any of the previous seminars, we
always give a brief re-cap.

Our brains were built for a world that no longer exists and social anxiety is the new kid on the block as far as
our brains are concerned in terms of things to get worried about it. In this engaging, innovative and
compassionately delivered seminar we look at why our brains can find the complexity of other people so
difficult sometimes.

sportsmen and women, many of whom take part in sports out
of college, and we would love to be able to celebrate them.
Many thanks.

Hosting Spanish students for a week in March 2020 - The Spanish department is taking part in an
exchange this year. In December 16 of our students are going to spend a week in Vigo, Spain and will be

staying with Spanish host families for a week. The school are coming back to visit us however they are
bringing more than 16 students so we are asking for volunteer host families. The students will be visiting us
for a week at the end of March (approx 25th March - 1st April) this is the last week of school before Easter.
You would host them for the week and take part in normal family activities and it might be nice for you to
show them around the area at the weekend. They do not need to have their own room as students will be
matched in age and gender. There will be some group activities also arranged nearer the time. We are hoping
to find families to match one boy (year 11/12/13) / 3 boys year (9/10) / 2 girls year (9/10). This is a fabulous
opportunity for any student but especially those interested in language and culture. If you are interested in
hosting a student please email me at [email protected]
Thank you so much for considering this and supporting such a great experience for the students.
