UCKFIELD COLLEGE LIFE

February 2019

Uckfield College Win the Wealden Cup 2019

Our current Year 13 students have much to celebrate, having retained the Wealden Cup against
strong competition from Hailsham Community College and Heathfield Community College. Over
several months our students have been competing against these 6th Form colleges in a series of
sporting, academic and creative challenges.

Uckfield College’s path to victory began in June with a competitively fought opening round of
University Challenge which was won by Hailsham, with our valiant team finishing in third position.
Undaunted by this early setback, Uckfield later went on to secure a victory in the football competition
and a second-place position in the netball, which was won by Heathfield. The Masterchef round of
the Wealden Cup took place in October. A ll of the teams worked incredibly hard and the standard of
the food that was prepared was very high. The team from Uckfield College performed superbly to win
on the day, with a very impressive meal of pan-fried duck breast with a blackberry sauce and a
dessert of raspberry and mascarpone opera cake served with a passion fruit coulis.
The final round, the debate competition, took place in January at Hailsham College.
The Uckfield team took part in debates on the topics “Humanity should fear advances in A.I.” and
“Tourism is good for the world”. All of the judges were impressed by the quality of the arguments put

forward and were wowed by some highly effective rhetorical flourishes. Hailsham won this round,
with Uckfield just a few points behind in second place.
This final result means that the winners of the Wealden Cup 2019 are Uckfield College, with Hailsham
in 2nd and Heathfield in 3rd.
As a multi-disciplinary competition, it was necessary that a wide range of students should take part,
giving up much of their own time to prepare for each stage. The quality of teamwork and
sportsmanship throughout has been superb. Congratulations to all those who took part!

Drama returns from The Unreturning!

On Thursday 24th January, drama students from Years 10 through 13 travelled to London to watch
Frantic Assembly’s latest creation, The Unreturning. With a focus on soldiers returning home after
war, three unique stories are told from 1918, 2013 and 2026. Using seamless transitions and physical
theatre, we were presented with three tales with moments of laughter, sadness and concern. The
students were a credit to the college, particularly the Year 12 and 13 students who assisted in guiding
their peers safely through London’s busy streets. The trip was enjoyed by everyone and the students
themselves helped make the day delightful.
