UCKFIELD COLLEGE LIFE

April 2019

Trailblazer Graduates of Prince William Award

The Prince William Award aims to help young people build their character, resilience and confidence to
empower them to “be their best”. They've done this by working through a 36 week programme
starting in Years 6 & 7. The key themes (Personal Development, Relationships, Working Together,
Community and Environment) enable young people to develop an understanding of their individual
character, their character within a team and developing leadership and responsibility. Well done all!

The Overland Hike Competition 2019

On the weekend of 22 & 23 March Scouts and Explorers took part in a challenging 25 mile incident
hike over two days; in teams of four they had to carry all their kit in rucksacks with a total weight of
40kg/44kg and camped overnight in the South Downs National Park. 65 teams entered this year’s
competition.
Ashdown District Scouts and Explorers from Uckfield, Buxted, Crowborough and Groombridge had
been training together every weekend since the beginning of January; improving their map reading
skills, distance and speed of hiking and doing some incident training along the way. They had a

practice expedition weekend on 9 & 10 March in those gale force conditions! This really tested their
resilience and teamwork.
The 2019 Overland Hike Competition started in Wilmington and at the 14 checkpoints along the way
the teams were given incidents which tested their Scouting knowledge, such as knots, first aid and
pioneering, plus unusual skills like star signs, building a scarecrow and making and flying kites! Points
were awarded for the incidents as well as for teamwork, camping skills, cooking nutritional meals and
for hiking at 3 miles per hour. The finish on Sunday was in Lewes. Ashdown District had 8 Scout
teams and 4 Explorer teams.

running in 5 minutes 52 seconds. He was due a silver medal but they ran out of silver, so had to have

Uckfield College students at British Street Dance
Championships 2019

Universal Dance’s Street Dance Crews, Graffiti and Scribble, travelled to Newcastle over the Easter
Weekend to compete in the British Street Dance Championships 2019. Both teams had to qualify
during 2018 to be invited to attend the competition.
Graffiti, UD’s Senior Crew came 4t h in the 16 & Under Amateur Category which was a fantastic result
given that the team have only competed at this level twice before. The team is made up of all current
and ex Uckfield College students; Emily Hunt (17), Lily Rouse (16), Charlise Atkins (16), Rhys
Stanley (15), Keria Probert (15), Charlotte Cope (15), Fleur Hunt (12) and Sophie
Burchett (12).

Scribble, the Junior Crew, are now the 12 & Under British Champions after winning their category!
The team is made up of various dancers from the local Primary Schools aged 8-12 years but a special
mention to T abitha Elliot (12) and Skyler Barker (11).

Sophie Burchett and Fleur Hunt also now hold the 12 & Under British Amateur Duo 2019 title too!

Lindsay Willis-Wood, the crew’s teacher, is over the moon with the results and couldn’t be prouder of
each and every one’s hard work and dedication.

Joolz Earley and Team Shadow complete in Florida

Joolz and Team Shadow are still undefeated in recent cheerleading competitions. They have won the
last 3 competitions and Grand Champions, and also a paid bid to compete at NCA Dallas next year.
We are all very proud of Joolz and cannot wait to see how the team do in Orlando.

Modelling Success for Kristy Scholler, 12N

Further to Kristy’s success winning 2 titles in the finals of Topmodel UK last year, she was invited back
to the finals once again, held in London at the end of March, where she won a further two titles -
Natural Beauty Skin Award and 1st runner up title holder for the Commercial Model category. Kristy is
the only Topmodel UK ever to win 4 awards, being the most awards ever given to a single Topmodel
UK.

Kristy also recently won the Local Children’s Portrait Awards in Tunbridge Wells. This portrait was
entered into the 2018 Children’s National Portrait Competition and Kristy’s photo came 3rd place out
of hundreds of entries. Pictured below is Kristy accepting a copy of the winning Portrait from Paul
