Farley Art Exhibition and
Awards

On the evening of Friday 18th
September Ms Archer and Ms Jennings
attended the exhibition at Farley Farm,
Chiddingly.

These awards are a biannual event and
are open to every school in East
Sussex. Each school is invited to submit
up to 6 pieces for selection in various
categories covering both GCSE and A

selected for the exhibition.

At the opening night awards are given
for each category and this year these

the Beatles album - Sergeant Pepper).

Work was submitted last academic year - and it was lovely to see family of students who are now away at
university.

Fantastically, of our 6 students, 5 won an award!

Tiger Innes, Year 10 wins prize at The Big Futures Show

Matt Ryan from Young Enterprise visited the college last Friday to present Tiger Innes with a prize after
she won the £10 Challenge when we took all our Year 9 students to The Big Futures Show in Eastbourne in
April.
Tiger's business was called Doggywoggydodah - the judges liked the name and it's connection to the
famous cake shop! They also thought that Tiger presented her business idea very well.
Tiger put her entrepreneurial idea to practice during the summer holidays with Eleri Rose; they paid for
stalls at several markets and sold bags of their doggy biscuits; it was a great success! Well done Tiger!

Zoological Society London (ZSL) poo hunter Skypes Y12
Biologists

Henrike Schulte from the Zoological Society London spoke with Biologists from Y12 on Friday 11th
October about her PhD research, conservation and academic pathways that involve animals and work
around the World.
Nathan asked how humans can help with climate change and conservation and Jess followed with
questioning when Intervention becomes Interference. Ellie was interested in when does the cost
outweigh the benefit in conservation in more general societal terms. Freddy opened conversations
about careers in zoology and the range of possibilities for anyone considering this path. Henrike
pointed out the importance of having ‘non-scientists’ working within science projects - coding,
modelling, languages, economic patterns, financing and many more areas are linked closely to charity
and research work with animals.
Henrike explained how two things that make a great scientist are ‘perseverance and curiosity’ and
these are definitely valued highly in the Science department at Uckfield.
We hope to collaborate on further activities with ZSL in the future so watch this space!

Geography lecture: ‘Deserts in a warming world’

After school on Tuesday 15th October a group of Year 12 and 13 A level Geographers headed down to the
Falmer Campus of the University of Brighton to attend a lecture put on by the local Geographical
Association. Ironically, given the incessant rain of October so far, the lecture was entitled ‘Deserts in a
warming world’ and was given by Professor Dave Nash of the university. He gave a very interesting talk
investigating the conditions that create deserts and how they are expanding as a result of climate change.
Surprisingly, 45% of the earth’s terrestrial surface and a third of the world’s population belong to areas
classified as ‘drylands’ so what happens there has huge implications for the planet. The Chinese have
already planted 66 billion trees in an attempt to stop the spread of deserts but in many areas more modest
adaptation can help, for instance using water more efficiently and planting more drought resistant crops.

This is the first lecture of the 2019-20 season and our students will have the opportunity to attend future
talks on a range of interesting and relevant topics given by academics or practitioners.

Rugby Fixtures

U16 County Cup Rugby vs Beacon
lost 28-36

Y11’s 1st county cup game of the season unfortunately ended in defeat. Mr Levett said ‘It was a really
good entertaining game, very end to end, with some great creative phases of play from both teams,
one of our strongest players suffered a nasty injury just after half time and this tipped the balance in
Beacon’s favour. Ultimately though Beacon made less mistakes than us and this made the difference.’
Never mind lads on to the next game.

Y9 County Cup Rugby v Heathfield

22-37

Mr Levett said ‘It started off a really close game, it was 0-0 for 20 minutes, but slowly Heathfield
started to command their territory more and more, then their big ball carriers put Heathfield on the
front foot and some stand out performances from Heathfield’s Centre provided them with some good
opportunities, which they capitalised on. We put up a good fight but it was not enough to secure a 1st
win of the season.

Ms Archer’s paintings exhibited in London Gallery

Ms Bethan Archer, Curriculum Leader of Art & Photography is really proud to have recently had her
work selected to be exhibited in a gallery in London.

Ms Archer has been painting orangutans for the past two years following several trips to do voluntary
work in the Samboja Lestari Sanctuary in Borneo run by the BOS Foundation. The paintings she
produces are from her own photographs mostly, and she has recently collaborated with National
Geographic photographer Wiwik Astutik, who she met on her first visit to Borneo.

The students always tease Ms Archer about her love of orangutans but they are fascinated with her
stories, and have greatly benefited from her re-found passion of painting in oils

Ms Archer’s pieces are part of a group show at the Gallery Different in Fitzrovia, London, just off
Tottenham Court Road. The show runs from Friday 25th October through until October 29th and the
Gallery is open from 11am - 8pm each day.
