Dear Parents and Carers

Record number of Arkwright scholars at Uckfield College

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship of its type in the UK to inspire and
nurture school-age students to be the country’s future leaders of the Engineering Profession.

One of our students was also chosen to be in the national Arkwright promotional video. Please follow this link to
view: https://youtu.be/OQXWdpnedVw

This year Uckfield College have 4 (yes 4!) successful Arkwright Scholars (there are only 415 nationally in total).

Students who aspire to be engineers in the future go through a year long selection process. They are selected
for their potential as future engineering leaders by assessing their academic, practical and leadership skills in
engineering disciplines. These are gauged through a selection process comprising of an assessed application
form including a teacher’s reference; a two-hour, problem-solving aptitude exam; and a university-based
Interview.

The scholarship winners receive an annual financial award and enrichment activities such as mentoring and a
range of experiences such as industry conferences, Connect Days, residential courses and university VIP days.
These industry visits enhance a scholar's experience of engineering in a real-world context. Arkwright
Engineering Scholarships are highly regarded by university admission tutors and industry recruiters and are one
of the most prestigious accolades that a talented sixth form student can receive.

2015 - 2017 Charlie Martin Dan
2016 - 2018 Darius Abadi Samuel Bishop
2017 - 2019 Robert Ross William Dobney

Thomas Lines

We are all so proud of these brilliant students and we believe they will go on to become leaders in their chosen
field. I am very grateful to Mr O’Connor who inspires and supports these students and to Arkwright for helping
them take the next steps in their engineering and technology futures.

Through Anxiety & Beyond - Wed 8 January 6 - 7pm at Uckfield College - Andrew Wright
Our innovative brain science seminars continue on Wed 6th January 6 - 7pm. D o sign up at the link. T hese
seminars are open to all parents, carers and students who attend Uckfield schools. In this seminar we will

look deeply into social anxiety, what it is and how we can respond differently to it and also explore how we
can build our well-being from the ground up every day by managing our daily thought traffic with cognitive
and emotional agility.

Hosting Spanish students for a week in March 2020 - The Spanish department is taking part in an
exchange this year. In December 16 of our students are going to spend a week in Vigo, Spain and will be
staying with Spanish host families for a week. The school are coming back to visit us however they are
bringing more than 16 students so we are asking for volunteer host families. The students will be visiting us
for a week at the end of March (approx 25th March - 1st April) this is the last week of school before Easter.
You would host them for the week and take part in normal family activities and it might be nice for you to
show them around the area at the weekend. They do not need to have their own room as students will be
matched in age and gender. There will be some group activities also arranged nearer the time. We are hoping
to find families to match one boy (year 11/12/13) / 3 boys year (9/10) / 2 girls year (9/10). This is a fabulous
opportunity for any student but especially those interested in language and culture. If you are interested in
hosting a student please email me at [email protected]
Thank you so much for considering this and supporting such a great experience for the students.

Uckfield College Carol Service 2019 - Hosting a German Student
We have a longstanding exchange relationship with a school in Germany who come and perform with us in
the carol service every year. The German students stay with host families during their 4 nights in the UK and
we are looking for hosts for this year between the 14th - 18th December.
This tradition is into its 17th year and in order to be successful we require a group of host families. Our
students have visited Germany in the recent past and were all graciously welcomed and looked after by their
German hosts.
If you are interested in hosting a German student for this years' carol service please read the a ttached letter
and respond using the G oogle Form in this link.
Please don't hesitate to contact me [email protected] with any queries.

Learning Plus - SEND (Special, Educational Needs & Disabilities department)

Please use this link to discover Sensory Spaces
across East Sussex.

Our Learning Plus Department made decorations for Uckfield College's tree at
Holy Cross Christmas Tree Festival. The theme for the tree is ‘challenges’. On
the back of some of the handmade decorations are challenges that students
have focused on or overcome over the past year. They also focused on
environmental challenges and have tried to be as eco-friendly as possible with
wooden or recycled decorations.

Please send in your used stamps

We are collecting used stamps for T he Royal
National Institute of Blind People which is a UK
charity offering information, support and advice to
almost two million people in the UK with sight loss.
Everyday 250 people begin to lose their sight. RNIB has a crucial role to play
in creating a world where there are no barriers to people with sight loss.
