UCKFIELD COLLEGE LIFE

September 2019

Uckfield College Greenpower Car Club races at Dunsfold!

Uckfield College Greenpower Car club took their car Trifast Fluffy Dice VIII for its second outing of the
year to Dunsfold Park, (the famous Top Gear test track in Surrey) on Sunday 15th September. Fluffy is
a 24volt electric race car built by students at Uckfield College. The object of the races is to cover the
maximum distance in 90 minutes on one set of 35amp/hour batteries. All the cars use the same
batteries and motor.
We raced against a very strong field of 75 other teams and came in 20th overall covering 32 miles in
our 90 minutes. This is by far our best distance in the Greenpower formula 24 races. Congratulations
to Team Leader Tom Pledger and drivers Holly McDonald, Charlotte Siddons, Rob Hutchison & Owain
Thomas and all the rest of the club members who have worked so hard to build & prepare Fluffy for
the event.

Year 7 Together to Achieve Evening 2019

Year 7 parents came into college to learn more about the way that English, Maths, Science and MFL
are taught at Uckfield.

They were also shown how they could support the students with learning at home and outside
lessons.

Year 9 Together to Achieve Evening

It was really good to see a full hall on the evening of Thursday 26th September for the Year 9 TTA evening
where key departments shared information about the GCSE courses.
You can find the presentation slides with links here - Y ear 9 TTA Evening

 European Day of Languages

European Languages Day on Thursday 26th of September was a
roaring success due to the immense collaboration of staff and students
all over the college from Year 7, to the sixth form, teachers and kitchen
staff. The MFL department ran a Bake Off competition which saw
students bringing in edible masterpieces all relating to different world
cultures. We are proud to announce that the sale of these incredible
cakes has allowed us to raise £132.25 for the local charity ‘Voices in
Exile’ which is a charity that works with refugees, asylum seekers and
vulnerable migrants with no recourse to public funds in East and West
Sussex and Surrey. This money is the equivalent of the fee for a
qualified interpreter for over two hours or enough to supply at least five
families with food and toiletries for a week. It would also pay for a
Home Office travel document to enable safe travel to their family
overseas. So, thank you again to all those bakers and of course the
cake consumers!

Elsewhere in the college departments put on an array of fantastic activities for year 8 students. These
included:
- Students exploring French vocabulary and phrases that have found their way into the English language.
- Students studying certain European accents and analysing their various vocal tones.
- Students singing La Bamba by Ritchie Valens in Spanish as an a cappella model at the start of the
lesson.
- Students placing European countries on a map but each country names is in the countries own language.
- Analysing the elements from the periodic table that have been named after European cities or countries
- Discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the spread of the English language beyond Europe.

Thank you again to all those
involved for celebrating the
diversity of languages and
cultures within Europe and
allowing our students to
understand the importance of
language learning and

intercultural understanding.

Year 9 students raise whopping £1,450 on Shine Night Walk!

On Saturday 21st September 2019 4 girls from Year 9 decided to take on the challenge of the 10k
Shine Night Walk in London, raising funds for Cancer Research. Ella Brown, Izzy Cooper, Mabel
Kroger and Apple Calamita started the walk at 10pm in London and completed the walk in 2 hours.
The city was beautifully lit and the atmosphere was fantastic. So far their efforts have raised a
whopping £1450 for the charity, with donations still coming in, and each of the girls has their own
personal reason for choosing this particular cause. We are so proud of their determination and
delighted that they have smashed their original target of £150! Congratulations Ella, Izzy, Mabel and
Apple, we are very proud of you!

Please keep in touch!

We always love to hear news of our students’ achievements out of College, so please do e-mail to
keep us updated with the fantastic range of activities they are involved in. Please e-mail details to
Toni Fletcher, [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
