UCKFIELD COLLEGE LIFE

January 2020

East Sussex Youth Cabinet Election

Congratulations go to Reece Emerton, who was elected at the end of last term as Uckfield
College’s Youth Cabinet representative. Reece will replace Edward Peasgood and will hold the
post for two years. This year’s election was entirely organised by our students. Dan Lupton,
Edward Peasgood and Tess Oldham did an outstanding job and the number of students who
stood for election this year was a record high. The Youth Cabinet will be campaigning to protect
the environment and tackle knife crime – the two issues which polled highest among East
Sussex young people in the national Make Your Mark ballot organised by the British Youth
Council.
A total of 21 young people aged between 11 and 18 from across East Sussex have been
elected by their peers to represent their school, college or youth group.
The previous Youth Cabinet’s mental health campaign which promoted Top Ten Tips for
parents to support young people’s mental health can be seen at

Improving Progress of High Attainers

Ben Crockett from Durrington Research School gave an excellent talk to staff on 15th January on
how to improve the progress of our high attaining students.

Astrophysics Masterclass

All our Year 13 Physics A Level students
attended a tailor made Astrophysics
Masterclass day at the University of Sussex.
Astrophysics is the Option Topic that we study
here at Uckfield College as part of our Physics A
Level course. They were shown equipment,
such as telescopes, that the Astronomy
Department use, they were given lectures by
experts in the field, and they were given the
opportunity to 'make' their own comet! They all
had a positively enriching experience which will
give them that extra edge when it comes to
sitting their Astrophysics paper.

Ashdown Hike

4th Uckfield Alpha Scout Troop entered two teams into the prestigious Ashdown Hike
Competition on Sunday 19 January 2020, an event that has been running since 1973!

In teams of four, Scouts hiked 16km over the South Downs. They were given grid references at
each checkpoint and using their map reading skills they navigated their way around the Firle
area of our National Park.

The Scouts used their teamwork abilities to gain valuable points by completing incidents at
checkpoints along the way, these ranged from Scouting skills such as map symbols and
semaphore to bike maintenance and moving a full bucket of water over a stream with a rope.

Huge congratulations to the teams who came in 1st and 3rd!
The third placed team were just 2 points off second place!

First place:
Charlotte Siddons
Rosalyn Traunter
Emma Varrall
Hannah Siddons

Third place:
Immy Churchill
Ben Eldered
Charlotte Newman
Jakob Komaier-Peeters
