Mr. Ravindra Boratkar President of MEDC. A word from the President's Desk…. I welcome you all to the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the MEDC. It gives me great pleasure to place before you the Annual Activity Report of the Council for the year 2022-23. The lingering Ukraine crisis will have its biggest impact on the emergence of a whole new globalenergy system involving some uncomfortable compromises for most countries. In the short run, they will probably embrace investment in polluting fossil fuels in return for economic security. In the long run they will most likely adopt a state-run industrial policy in an attempt to accelerate a government thrust on renewables. Much of the rich world’s inflation today is attributable to soaring energy prices. Sooner or later, a global momentum will emerge to develop a more cost- effective energy system incorporating the realities of climate change. With many visionary policies already in place, India stands to gain from it. Maharashtra has garnered investment worth Rs. 1.4 trillion at the recently held World Economic Forum (WEF) 2023 in Davos. A clutch of deals signed with 19 companies across various sectors could become an industrial gamechanger for Maharashtra, apart from generating quality employment for over a hundred thousand people. Maharashtra is truly magnetic, and there is huge opportunity here for global investors in infrastructure and manufacturing. Our state continues to retain its premier position in the country for overseas investment. These investments are spread throughout the geography of Maharashtra in line with the government’s focus on balanced regional development. Being mostly capital-intensive commitments, these partnerships have a high potential for multiplier effect on the state’s economy, apart from their huge job creation prospects. While industrial development is key to sustained economic growth, agriculture and allied activities continue to employ a large and vulnerable section of the population in Maharashtra. 04 Maharashtra Economic Development Council ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT - 2022-2023
With our economy recovering rapidly from the Covid-induced slowdown, we need to enable our farmers to advance further in the food processing value chain and enhance their productivity by giving them exposure to the latest technologies and best practices in the field. In this regard, our annual Agrovision event held at Nagpur on November 27, 2022, under the patronage of Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari was a big success, with a large and enthusiastic participation from both the public and the private sectors. We conducted a wide and diverse range of activities this year, which were rich in both quality and quantity. Our virtual meetings continued unabated, and we also held seminars and workshops on various socioeconomic issues. Our flagship event, the Dr. Dhananjayrao Gadgil Memorial Lecture was held at the Y B Chavan Centre on October 18, 2022. Dr. Ajit Ranade, noted economist and Vice-Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Economics and Politics, Pune, delivered the keynote address on Fastest Growing Economy with Thrust on Atmanirbhar Bharat. The Guest of Honour on the occasion, Shri Mrugank Paranjape, MD & CEO, NCDEX e-market Ltd., set the tone for this insightful lecture. We were fortunate to get such eminent speakers, as well as a large and high-quality audience, on this occasion of our 17 th Dr. D R Gadgil Memorial Lecture. To streamline our activities, we have appointed six new regional directors from this year. They are Mr. Chetan Raikar (Mumbai), Mr. Ashish Garde (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), Mr. Krishna Bhandge (Nashik), Mr. Sachin Itkar (Pune), Mr. Sumant Chitaley (Nagpur) and Mr. Satyajeet Bhonsle (Kolhapur). They will ensure that all our activities, events and projects percolate down to the grassroots level in their respective jurisdictions. I look forward to leveraging their strengths appropriately in the best interests of the Council. This year we also constituted nineteen expert Committees to enable us to holistically tackle issues pertaining to the socioeconomic development of Maharashtra. Our Monthly Digest as well as our Weekly Economic Review are coming out regularly on a wide range of contemporary socioeconomic issues. Both of them are well received by our readers. We continued wholeheartedly with all our events. In August 2022, we organized our annual MSME Conference in Mumbai. Renowned speakers shared their professional experiences and the contribution of the MSME sector to nation-building activities. In February 2022, we deliberated on the Union Budget 2022, through a live telecast with Saam TV. It was followed by an insightful panel discussion on the pros and cons of the Budget and how it could enable both India and Maharashtra to proceed in the direction of sustained socioeconomic growth. I was subsequently invited as a guest for an event called Corporate Gappa. The discussion revolved around what Maharashtra received from the Union Budget. MEDC A word from the President's Desk...
In continuation with our activities pertaining to the blue economy, we organized Fishtech 2023 in collaboration with the concerned departments of the government, both state and Central. Eight technical sessions were moderated by MEDC Committee Members, and renowned speakers from both the public and the private sectors participated enthusiastically and shared their knowledge and experience with the audience. Our meetings with the Consulate Generals of various countries went off well. We met with the Consulate General of Australia, Belgium, Japan, and Switzerland. We also met the Ambassador of Switzerland as well as a key dignitary from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Sweden. We discussed with them all the possibilities of mutual trade and industrial collaboration. I hardly need add that all these endeavours have become possible only due to the unstinted support I received from all my colleagues at the Council, as well as the other professional bodies that I am associated with. From the MEDC, I am particularly indebted to Mr. Atul Shirodkar (Vice-President), Mrs. Meenal Mohadikar (Vice-Precident), Mr. Nandkishor Kagliwal (Past President) and Cdr. Dipak Naik (Immediate Past President) as well as the Regional Directors and the Chairpersons of all the Expert Committees. I express my sincere gratitude to the governing board, my predecessors and colleagues for their active involvement and timely guidance over the years, which has made so many of our achievements possible, and enhanced the visibility of the Council in all walks of life. I consider myself fortunate that they were all available for me whenever I needed their advice and support. This address cannot be complete without appreciating the efforts put in by our employees for the organization. In this regard, I wish to make a special mention of the dedicated secretariat staff of MEDC, especially Ms. Sheetal Panchal (Deputy Director), Dr. Dhananjay Samant (Chief Economist Advisor), and Ms. Snehal Behere (Accountant). They have all worked hard round the clock, despite the severe constraints imposed on them by the realities of today. The world is now betting big on India, and with our economic reforms set to accelerate, things can only improve. Major overseas companies are also showing increasing interest in Maharashtra, as was clear from the positive response of the global business community that our Chief Minister got recently at Davos. Maharashtra continues to lead the nation in socioeconomic and industrial development, and MEDC also deserves some credit for that achievement. The global situation is also improving. Covid-19 has been officially declared no longer a global health emergency, even though it continues to remain a global health threat. This is the chance for Maharashtra to bounce back bigger and better and prove to the world that we are second to none. It is precisely here that MEDC will play a pivotal role in the service of our state. MEDC A word from the President's Desk...
