The Arizona Courier News is a Proud Member of: Community Spirit Dear Readers, As we bid farewell to November, I can't help but reflect on the vibrancy and energy that defined this month in our beloved Arizona community. The welcoming weather has not only graced us with pleasant temperatures but has also ushered in the arrival of our seasonal visitors, adding to the lively atmosphere that defines our town. This month, we had the pleasure of celebrating our veterans at the "Day of the Cowboy" in Gold Canyon and the Festival of the Superstitions in Apache Junction. These events were a testament to the spirit of our community, showcasing live performances, delectable food, and enthusiastic community involvement. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the many men and women who dedicated their time and effort to make these celebrations a resounding success. Our November was filled to the brim with local events, invigorating hikes, captivating shows, and concerts such as the Veteran benefit concert hosted by VFW 9399. The Dashing Groomers' charity dog wash was a particular highlight, drawing pet enthusiasts from all corners of our community. Witnessing the support for these noble causes was truly heartwarming. As we gather around our tables for Thanksgiving, I want to express gratitude on behalf of our community to everyone who contributed to the local food banks. Your generosity has not gone unnoticed, and it is heartening to see our community come together to support those in need. With Christmas just around the corner, let's keep in mind the importance of food donations during this festive season. Don't forget to check our "events" section for exciting upcoming happenings in our community. If you're embarking on holiday shopping, I want to emphasize the significance of supporting our local businesses. They are the backbone of our community, and by shopping locally, not only can you find unique and meaningful gifts, but you also contribute to the prosperity of our town. So, let's make the most of this holiday season! Our town is blessed with a myriad of local performances, car shows, invigorating hikes, enchanting light displays, and much more. Embrace the festive spirit, connect with your community, and revel in the joyous moments that make our town truly special. Arizona PAGE 7 DECEMBER 2023 COURIER NEWS EDITORIAL Holiday Magic, Traditions, and Community Spirit Travis Mahaffey Arizona Courier News As the holiday season approaches, our household is filled with the joyful chaos that comes with the annual debate over when to start d e c o r a t i n g f o r Christmas. W h i l e I advocate for giving Thanksgiving its due respect, my wife and kids eagerly anticipate the holiday season's magic, wanting to dive into the festive preparations at the earliest opportunity. This disagreement, however, is a cherished part of our holiday tradition, reflecting the anticipation and excitement that this season brings. One of our family's most cherished traditions is the annual ritual of setting up the Christmas tree and decorating it together. As we string lights and place ornaments, we gather to watch the timeless Santa Claus movie, creating a warm atmosphere filled with laughter and love. This time spent as a family, navigating the challenges of elf mischief and reveling in the joy of festive decorations, sets the tone for the entire holiday season. Every year, we alternate between spending Christmas with our families in Show Low and the wintery landscapes of southwestern Colorado. The choice is not just about convenience but a deliberate desire to be surrounded by the crisp, wintry climate that makes Christmas feel truly special. These trips are a journey into the heart of family, marked by the creation of lasting memories. One such memory is the taste of my mom's Christmas fudge, a delicious treat passed down through generations. As she prepares it, following the same recipe her parents did before her, the aroma fills the air with nostalgia. It's a simple yet profound connection to our family's past, and I look forward to passing down this cherished recipe to our children, ensuring that this sweet tradition endures. While many of our holiday traditions are reserved for family, our neighborhood adds an extra layer of festive joy with the annual golf cart parade. This communal celebration is a testament to the wonderful community we are fortunate to be a part of. The parade brings neighbors together for a night of fun, good food, hot chocolate, and creatively decorated carts, fostering a sense of unity that extends beyond our individual homes. Gratitude is at the heart of our holiday celebrations. We are thankful for our family and friends, our dedicated teachers and coaches, our cozy home, and the success of our business. Our community plays a pivotal role in shaping these blessings, and we recognize that without this supportive network, none of this would be possible. This holiday season, we're using our platform in the Arizona Courier News to amplify the voices of local non-profits and businesses, helping spread the word about their upcoming activities and events. It's our way of giving back to the community that has given us so much. As I reflect on holidays past, I am filled with fond memories of family, games, presents, and delicious foods. This season becomes a time not only for celebration but also for reflection, as we share stories of family members who are no longer with us. By passing along these stories to our children, we ensure that the legacy of our loved ones lives on, adding depth and meaning to our holiday traditions. In the midst of the hustle and bustle, let us not forget the true magic of the season— the joy of togetherness, the warmth of shared traditions, and the spirit of giving that defines the holidays for us. May this season be filled with love, laughter, and the creation of new memories that will be treasured for years to come.

For many, the golf cart is not just a means of transportation; it's a cherished vehicle used to navigate the neighborhood, attend clubhouse events, and spread holiday cheer. One of the most exciting traditions in various communities involves the annual golf cart parade, where neighbors showcase their creativity by decorating their carts in the most festive ways possible. If you're eager to join the holiday fun and transform your golf cart into a rolling celebration, here are some tips and ideas to get you started: 1. Power Up Your Decorations: Modern golf carts often come equipped with 120v plugins or USB ports, perfect for powering holiday lights and other decorations. However, if you own an older cart without these features, you have a couple of options. One is to have a power plug socket professionally installed, directly wired to your cart's power system. Alternatively, a simpler approach involves using a spare car battery and a power inverter (DC 12V to AC110V). While this DIY solution may be more straightforward, keep in mind that golf cart batteries differ from automobile batteries, so professional installation is recommended. 2. Illuminate the Night with LED Lights: Light up your golf cart with an LED light setup. LEDs are not only energy-efficient but also offer a dazzling array of colors. Opt for a solid color scheme or go for the dynamic option of color-changing lights controlled by a remote. With LEDs, you can create a festive ambiance without draining your cart's battery excessively. 3. Decorate with Style: Get creative with decorations by using lightweight materials like particle board. Cut it into holiday shapes—perhaps a sled or a Christmas tree— and embellish it with paint, ribbons, and, of course, more lights. Ensure that your decorations won't interfere with the cart's functionality, steering components, or wheels. Learn from our mistakes; the first attempt resulted in lights too close to the front tire, causing an accidental casualty on a bump. Use zip ties for easy mounting and removal, allowing you to store your festive creations for future years. 4. Soundtrack for the Ride: No holiday golf cart parade is complete without a festive soundtrack. Consider mounting a portable Bluetooth speaker in the rear of your cart to spread holiday tunes as you roll along. For an upgrade next year, explore the option of a LED lights and music soundbar for a synchronized audiovisual experience. 5. Professional Assistance: If you're in need of professional installation, golf cart service, or supplies, check out Superstition Golf Carts at 186 N Ironwood Dr, Apache Junction, AZ 85120. Their expertise can help you take your holiday golf cart decorations to the next level. This holiday season, let your golf cart become a festive extension of your home. With a little creativity and the right accessories, you'll be the talk of the neighborhood as you spread joy and holiday spirit Photo By:Frank D'Amato on wheels.

Cole was recognized for his quick thinking and heroic actions in saving the life of his three-year-old sister after he witnessed her fall into the backyard swimming pool. In August of 2023, QCPD and QCFMD responded to a call of an unresponsive child who had been found in the backyard swimming pool. Cole witnessed his little sister fall into the swimming pool and without hesitation, sprang into action. He jumped into the pool to rescue his little sister while calling out for help. A family friend heard the cries and met Cole at the steps of the swimming pool. They immediately administered CPR and when police and fire arrived on scene, Cole’s sister was breathing and responsive. “We are proud to honor an act of bravery by a young man in our community,” said Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice. “Cole’s heroic actions on that day saved the life of his sister. Gateway To The Legendary Superstition Mountains Thomas J. Kollenborn © July 13, 2015 Along the way you passed by an old stone house about three quarters of a mile before you got to that point. At the last pass, before you fall into the head of Bull Dog wash, you can see Weaver's Needle like a giant eagle on the horizon. It's an awesome sight to behold. In the old days, before the Mammoth claim was cleared off for the removal of granite, it had a reddish hue to it and was a slight hill. The hill that Goldfield sits on had the same reddish clay covering it. The third can still be seen today to the south of Goldfield on the southeast side of Highway 88. Seems like I heard this somewhere before, if you pass the three red hills, you went too far. Well, we won't dwell on that. So, at that point where the old trail drops off, Cottonwood Springs is just to the north. The trail continued on along the divide until it connected with current day Highway 88, just south of Government Wells and the current day We a v e r ' s N e e d l e lookout. I conclude that this and the Military or Government Trail that the Dutchman was trying desperately to describe to Julia Thomas and Rhinehart Petrasch on his death bed are on in the same. There are times in our lives we all face very compelling challenges. My wife and I are no exception to the diseases that plague this planet we call Earth. Until recently our world was a retirement wonder and we had a great time for five years. In late September of 2014 Sharon was diagnosed with Bilateral Carcinoma. This was a real shock. I always thought cancer was something somebody else had. I knew a little about the disease, but not a lot. She started Chemotherapy in October. The doctors had caught the cancer at a very early stage before it spread. Annual mammograms saved her life as far as we are concerned. She continues to battle cancer with a smile always on her face. Her attitude is so positive she is an inspiration to many of the nurses and personal at the MD Anderson Cancer Clinic where she has received Chemo since October. Sharon always has a smile on her face and greets everyone positively at the center. She also greets everyone else the same way, “I am fine,” even though sometimes she is in pain and very tired from the therapy. The last thing on Sharon’s agenda is the desire for sympathy from anyone. Sharon is an inspiration to everyone that knows her. She survived a severe case of pneumonia in early April that most people would have succumbed to. She was in ICU for ten days. Sharon’s goal is to live to be 100 and run the rapids of the Colorado River through the mighty Grand Canyon for the fourth time when she is cured. She positively plans on being cured and returning to a normal life. For this reason I call her my “Star of the Desert.” I recently had a custom piece of jewelry made for her. It is a Saguaro cactus of Turquoise on a 14K gold background with a diamond on top of the cactus that represents the “Star of the Desert.” This “star” has been my guiding light for sixty years. Sharon has lived her entire life except for her childhood here in Apache Junction and East Mesa. She has hiked and rode her horse through the mountains for more than fifty years. She has been my companion on many trips into the mountains on foot and on horseback. For those of you who know how much I love the mountains you certainly understand how important this is to me. This June 23rd we were married for fifty-five years. On our 50th wedding anniversary, June 23, 2011, at Lost Dutchman State Park the temperature hit 114 degrees. We had more than a hundred guests attend our anniversary party and some of them were well over ninety years old. I am certain most came because of Sharon. I offered my refrigerated trailer to the elderly 85 and over for comfort. All of them refused my hospitality and remained outside to chat with Sharon. This story wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Jerry Sanstead, owner of The Jewelry Menders in Apache Junction. I’ve known Jerry for many, many years. About three years ago he showed me a Saguaro cactus made out of turquoise on a 14K gold backing. I really liked it, but I wasn’t sure Sharon would. I told Jerry I would let him know. Well three years later I went into his store to order something else and he said he still had that cactus I wanted, but he had added a large diamond to the top of it. Then he said he didn’t know where it was but when he found it he would let me know. I stopped by a few weeks later and picked up my order and Jerry said, “Tom, I found the Turquoise Saguaro cactus with the diamond on it.” I looked at it and told him I would take it. Yes, it was the “Star of the Desert.” It would be something Sharon would cherish, and certainly represent her determination and tenacity to defeat Cancer. I am not sure Jerry absorbed the total importance this piece of jewelry had on our lives at the time. However, we certainly consider him a gentleman and a man of his word. Apache Junction has many fine citizens and we are proud to have lived in Apache Junction and continue to be nearby neighbors. Apache Junction has been home for me since 1948 and continues to mean the same. I found my “Star in the Desert” in Apache Junction in November of 1959 while I was recovering from a severe injury I received while working on the Barkley Cattle Ranch at the Quarter Circle U Ranch. Sharon became my friend and helped me in some very desperate hours of my life. Her philosophy was “never, never give up and always smile.” She had far more to offer than I when we met. She encouraged me to continue my education and she sacrificed so much so I could graduate from Arizona State University. The Cancer Ward at MD Anderson is not a cheerful place but Sharon’s smile has brought new life to the ward. Everyone knows her for her smile and cheerful attitude. They know the “Star of the Desert” has arrived and hopefully will improve the setting in someway. Some know her as the “lady from Apache Junction”. My friends I ask you to support the pink banner to beat breast cancer. It is a worthwhile project all over this great nation of ours. There are so many dedicated and devoted nurses, nurse’s aides, doctors, and other personal at the MD Anderson Clinic to Cure Cancer who tend to everyone’s needs. I am proud to have met many them and witnessed their dedication and devotion first hand. Sharon always has said “win or lose I have given this fight my best with a smile and a kind word for those who helped and cared for me. I ask for no sympathy nor do I want any. Sympathy is for others, not me.” We sincerely believe cancer will be cured in our lifetimes. These are the words from my “Star of the Desert.” Sharon enjoying the desert along the Honeymoon Trail near the Grand Falls of the Little Colorado River. We have wandered the deserts for more than 50 years.

Arizona PAGE 13 DECEMBER 2023 COURIER NEWS IN LOVING MEMORY: Sharon Kollenborn, The Star of the Desert he Arizona Courier News is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Sharon Kollenborn, the beloved wife of the late Tom Kollenborn, a figure near and dear to the hearts of our readers through the monthly "Kollenborn Chronicles." Sharon's departure on November 9, 2023, leaves a void in the community, but her legacy is one that will forever be etched in the vibrant tapestry of the Sonoran Desert. Sharon Kollenborn played a pivotal role in the Chronicles, not as a byline or a storyteller, but as the unsung hero behind the scenes. Her unwavering support and dedication allowed Tom to delve into the heart of Arizona's tales, knowing that the home fires were tended to with love and care. Tom often referred to Sharon as his "Star of the Desert," recognizing her as the shining light that illuminated his journey through the rugged landscapes of the Sonoran. Sharon's connection to the Sonoran Desert ran deep, and she considered herself an integral part of its beauty and mystique. A testament to her adventurous spirit, Sharon bravely rafted the Colorado River not once, but twice, with the ambition to conquer its currents for a third time. Her love for the outdoors extended to countless hours on horseback, exploring the nooks and crannies of the Superstition Mountains. Reavis Ranch and Needle Vista held a special place in her heart, where the desert whispered its secrets, and the landscape unfolded its stories. Born on December 26, 1938, Sharon's legacy is woven into the fabric of family, life, and the very essence of Arizona. Her love for her family was boundless, leaving behind two children, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, with a fifth on the way. Her nurturing spirit and the warmth of her presence will be profoundly missed not only by her family but by the community that was touched by her grace. As we remember Sharon Kollenborn, let us celebrate a life lived with purpose, surrounded by the beauty of the Sonoran Desert she cherished so dearly. Her legacy, like the tales chronicled by her late husband, will endure, reminding us to embrace the spirit of adventure, the love of family, and the profound connection we share with the magnificent landscape of Arizona. In the vast desert sky, Sharon's star will continue to shine bright, a guiding light for all who wander through the trails she once explored. The Arizona Courier News extends heartfelt thanks to Keith Ferland for bringing Sharon's remarkable legacy to our attention. PAGE 20 Arizona COURIER NEWS DECEMBER 2023 THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED Skiing and Snowboarding Adventures in Arizona - "Snowbowl vs. Sunrise" (480) 578-8035 Family Friendly! [email protected] Located at 6832 S. Kings Ranch Road, Suite 2 Gold Canyon, AZ 85118 Call And Rent A UTV Today! As winter's embrace transforms the rugged landscapes of Arizona, ski and snowboard enthusiasts find themselves faced with an enticing choice between two premier resorts: Snowbowl and Sunrise. Both destinations promise an exhilarating winter experience, but for those willing to venture a bit further, Sunrise Ski Park might just be the hidden gem waiting to steal your snow-loving heart. Proximity and Accessibility: Snowbowl Takes the Lead Let's start with the basics. Snowbowl, nestled in the San Francisco Peaks just outside of Flagstaff, boasts the advantage of proximity. A mere two hours from Phoenix, it stands as the go-to destination for Arizonans seeking a quick snow fix. The convenience is undeniable, making it an attractive choice for those looking to squeeze in a day trip or a spontaneous weekend getaway. Venturing Beyond: The Allure of Sunrise Ski Park However, for those who are willing to embark on a slightly longer journey, Sunrise Ski Park, located in the White Mountains near Greer, unfolds as a captivating alternative. Approximately a four-hour drive from Phoenix, the extended road trip to Sunrise unveils a world of breathtaking landscapes and a ski experience that's well worth the extra miles. Terrain Variety: Sunrise Shines Brighter When it comes to the slopes, Sunrise Ski Park truly shines. Boasting three peaks and over 65 runs, Sunrise offers a diverse range of terrains suitable for all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned expert or a novice eager to learn, Sunrise has the perfect slope for you. The resort's expansive terrain park is a haven for snowboarders, featuring jumps, rails, and other features that promise an adrenaline-packed experience. Snow Quality: Sunrise's Powder Paradise While both Snowbowl and Sunrise benefit from Arizona's surprisingly ample snowfall, Sunrise's higher elevation often translates to superior snow quality. The White Mountains receive a more consistent and plentiful snowpack, creating powder conditions that are the envy of winter sports enthusiasts. If you're chasing that elusive feeling of floating on a sea of powder, Sunrise is where you'll find it. Amenities and Atmosphere: Sunrise Ski Park's Hidden Charms Beyond the slopes, Sunrise Ski Park surprises with its charming alpine village atmosphere. The resort offers a range of amenities, including cozy lodges, restaurants, and shops that exude a warm and welcoming vibe. The intimate setting makes visitors feel like they've stumbled upon a well-kept secret, creating a more personal and enjoyable experience compared to the sometimes crowded atmosphere at Snowbowl. The Verdict: Sunrise Ski Park - Worth the Journey While Snowbowl's proximity is undoubtedly a draw, the discerning winter sports enthusiast may find that Sunrise Ski Park offers a more complete and fulfilling experience. From its diverse terrains and superior snow quality to the charming alpine village atmosphere, Sunrise emerges as the hidden gem waiting to be discovered by those willing to venture a bit further down the road. So, next time you're contemplating the perfect winter getaway, consider taking the road less traveled to Sunrise Ski Park – where the snow is deep, the slopes are diverse, and the memories are sure to last a lifetime. Do we even remember what happiness, joy, love, kindness, peace, and connectedness feels like? Covid left us in an even greater divided and separate place and left our conflict resolution skills in shambles. We were told to distance ourselves from others to BE SAFE, and to protect ourselves; we have for a large part forgotten how to connect again. This is not to say that you should not take measures to protect your health, but the mindset is what I am discussing. The parts that have slowly or not at all returned are the ability to interact with others, connect, talk, share, and remember that we are a human tribe (locally and globally) that solves life’s problems together not just by ourselves. As a doctor, I see the damage done from Covid, not only being healthy, but the worst parts that many get left with are the anxiety, depression, loneliness, feelings of separation, and an almost disconnect from our environments that we used to enjoy and from people around us. Governments solve governing issues, not people issues. It is up to people to work together, locally, globally, and internationally to solve our issues, differences, and grievances together. IT ALL BEGINS WITH YOU. Start this season out right and rekindle friendships, family get togethers, reach out to others (if only by phone), share with others and givenot just so they will give to you, but to remember the Joy, Peace, Love, Kindness, and Happiness that we all love and desire. Life can help us to bring out these great qualities in all of us. Take the time to make at least one contact a day to someone you don’t regularly reach out to or someone that you have long not connected with in the recent past. Expanding our circle, increasing our tribe, and strengthening our community gives hope to other communities when they can see what is possible. This local effect can ripple through and make global changes as well (The Butterfly Effect). We forget to look up when we get entrenched in our own worlds. Facebook, our cellphones, Covid, inflation, are just some of the things that move us to be more self-focused. Instead of being outward focused, caring, listening, and kind. The world will always offer a wide variety of self-absorbing offers, it is our thoughts, desires, and sheer will to overcome these that allows us to grow and be Happy as humans. As we emerge towards closer to a Multi-Country World War- you can see just how many Conflict Resolution Skills the world has forgotten. It is not the “I” that resolves things, but the “WE” together that can solve our issues. Being occupied and not focused has allowed this conflict to occur. Herbert Zipper, a brilliant musician, and Holocaust Survivor spent his life on one mission: Get people to sing and make music. For when people make music (however simple), YOU CONNECT BACK TO YOUR HEART. Listening to music is good but does not provide this necessary connection. When is the last time you heard someone HUM or Sing in public-not for money, just because they were happy. Even if you are a horrible singer, you should still sing in your house, car, or wherever- it is great for the heart. Once we are able to make this CONNECTION- WE CAN THEN SEE THE GOODNESS & LOVE IN OTHERS and the world improves. Even Coca Cola had a long-standing television ad in the 1970’s that stated: “If I could Teach the World to Sing- We Could Live In Perfect Harmony”. Paraphrasing an old joke… A hurricane was coming, and water levels were rising. A neighbor asked the next-door man, “Come with Us and we will drive away”. The nextdoor man said, “No, My Trust In my GOD is steadfast and I’ll be fine”. Then as the water reached the roofline on the next-door man’s house with him sitting on the roof was approached by another neighbor with a boat who said, “Jump in and come with us and we can get to safety”. The next-door man said, “No, My Trust In my GOD is steadfast and I’ll be fine”. Then just as the water was going to drown the next-door man, a rescue helicopter swooped in and said, “Grab the rope and we will pull you to safety”. The next-door man again said, “No, My Trust In my GOD is steadfast and I’ll be fine”. Finally, when the man died and was standing in front of his GOD he said, “GOD, I’m angry at you-you let me die!” GOD said, I sent you a car, a boat, and a helicopter-What more did you want? IT IS NOT JUST OUR BELIEFS, BUT OUR ACTIONS THAT MATTER MOST. Make your ACTIONS COUNT this season for you and the people around you. IT ALL BEGINS WITH YOU! May you have a great Holiday Season, because you choose to make it great. It is not what our community can do for us, it is what we can do for our community. Be Kind, Gentle, Peaceful, Loving, Caring, Sharing, and Human this Holiday Season-REACH OUT. Try something new and enrich your life. I and the staff at the Wellness Clinic in Gold Canyon wish everyone a Joyous, Peaceful, Kind, Holiday Season. Dr. KYLE NEELEY

Closed Arizona Author Wins National Book Award L o c a l a u t h o r C h e r y l Wilson has a serious thing about dogs, and she has turned that fascination with canines into a seven-book series of murder mysteries which has built a devoted following of readers. She recently was named recipient of BookFest and Reader’s Favorite’s first place awards for “Cozy Fiction” for her Doodled to Deathbook. Set in the make-believe seaside town of Barkview, California, Wilson creates crime stories that are peppered with humor. Barkview is a billed as the dog friendliest city in America, totally focused on the dog culture. “Barkeries” in Barkview whip up “caninolis,” “pupscream” shops line the boardwalk, and KDOG broadcasts the weekly flyball scores. Her newest release is a holiday pet celebration, entitled Dachshund to Death. Another forthcoming book, Labradored to Death, featuring minor league baseball’s fearless bat dogs is set to release for opening day 2024. Wilson’s previous mysteries cover a wide variety of breeds including Jack Russell Terriers, Bichons, German Shepherds, Golden Doodles, Corgis, Australian Shepherds, and a Cavalier King Charles. The protagonist in the series is “Cat” Wright, the lone cat person living in dog-centric Barkview, who takes it upon herself to solve complex murders involving local citizens. She has a cadre of quirky relatives who get involved in her sleuthing efforts. How did she get started on this peculiar genre of mysteries? “My mother, the couch potato, adopted a Jack Russell Terrier and I saw how important it is to have just the right dog,” she said. “And there is a right dog for everyone.” The award-winning author of her Cozy Pet Mysteries, Wilson’s love of writing was spurred by an early childhood encounter with a Nancy Drew book where she precociously wrote what she felt was a better ending. In addition to the literary experience, Wilson supplies readers with some of her favorite dog food recipes and publishes a monthly newsletter. Additionally, her Bow Wow Boutique offers a monthly special pooch product to her fans with proceeds that benefit dog rescue organizations nationally. Her books are available from Amazon, BookBub and Wilson’s website, www.cbwilsonauthor.com.

PAGE 46 Arizona COURIER NEWS DECEMBER 2023 COMMUNITY Pinal County Welcomes Renewable Energy Industry Leaders for Box Canyon Solar Project Groundbreaking Welcomes Arizona Governor Katie Hobbes to Celebrate the Renewable Power and Economic Benefits for Arizona FLORENCE, Ariz., Nov. 15, 2023 / PRNewswire/ -- BrightNight, the next-generation global renewable power producer built to deliver clean and dispatchable solutions, its joint venture partner Cordelio Power, and Southwest Public Power Agency (SPPA), Inc., announced today the groundbreaking of the Box Canyon Solar Project. The 300-megawatt project, located in Pinal County, Arizona, near the Town of Florence, represents the largest renewable energy procurement in SPPA's history, and a major step in Arizona's clean energy transformation. The project is the first in the 2 GW Arizona portfolio owned by BrightNight and Cordelio Power to commence construction. BrightNight announced today the groundbreaking of the Box Canyon Solar Project. At the site today, BrightNight CEO Martin Hermann, SPPA President of the Board Ken Robbins, and Pinal County leaders welcomed Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to celebrate the occasion. "While our state continues to experience historic economic growth, we must ensure this growth is sustainable, and there is no better place to do that than in our rural communities," said Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs. "This monumental project will not only generate clean energy, it will provide consistent revenue for the state and good paying jobs for local residents. My administration is committed to ensuring Arizona's potential for solar energy is fully realized so that we can make our state the best place to live, work, and raise a family." The groundbreaking marks a major milestone since SPPA selected the Box Canyon project in a competitive process beginning in December of 2020.BrightNight led development of the Box Canyon project as part of its joint venture with Cordelio Power. The Box Canyon Solar Project will produce enough electricity to power 77,000 Arizona homes and businesses annually with clean, reliable, and affordable energy, offsetting ~600 metric tons of CO2 emissions every hour. The project features a design optimized to maximize performance and deliver the highest-value project at the lowest cost with the help of BrightNight's proprietary artificial intelligence-based platform. Community Benefits The project will provide significant economic benefits at the local level. According to an economic impact study by Elliott Pollack and Associates, the project will generate $47M in Pinal County economic impact during the construction period and create 300 American jobs. During operation, the Box Canyon Solar Project will generate an estimated $134 million in additional local economic benefits in the form of local property taxes, wages, and more, bringing the total county-level economic contribution from construction and operations to over $180 million. Other local benefits from the project will include education scholarships for technical degrees. During the groundbreaking remarks, BrightNight CEO Martin Hermann announced that a portion of the project's operating proceeds would be used to send 50 students through the Central Arizona College's electrician program over the next five years. Hermann applauded the college for its local leadership and characterized the local support as just one of the ways BrightNight works to support the communities in which it operates: "At BrightNight, together with Cordelio, we are a long-term owner and operator of this project and committed to the local community and Pinal County." The project's value also extends beyond the local level. From the very beginning of the project, BrightNight worked with the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) to site the project on State Trust Land. Unde r the arrangement, over $65 million in lease payments will be made over the life of the project, which are allocated to the State of Arizona land trust. The trust's beneficiaries include K-12 education, university education, state hospitals, the department of corrections, and more across the state. Committed Arizona Partnership The Box Canyon Solar Project is an integral part of a broader vision for Arizona that includes a 2 GW portfolio with 900 MW in advanced stages across three counties, slated to create over 800 local skilled jobs and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue for the state and local municipalities. The Box Canyon Solar Project is expected to become operational in the first half of 2025. "We are delighted to partner with SPPA, one of the most forward-thinking utilities in America, to help them meet their power needs and deliver on their sustainability goals," BrightNight CEO Martin Hermann said. "The Box Canyon Solar Project is a model of utility-scale renewable power. At over 900,000 MWh of projected annual production, our project will provide reliable, clean energy for over 40 years, generating local revenue, strengthening domestic energy security, and creating valuable American jobs." "SPPA is proud to supply its members with safe, clean, reliable, and affordable electricity from an industry-leading renewable power producer. BrightNight was able to understand our longterm goals and propose a solution to meet the needs of our members and their customers, while remaining cost-effective," said SPPA President of the Board Ken Robbins. "We are delighted to have BrightNight as Pinal County's newest business partner. The Box Canyon Solar Project will create new economic opportunities for small businesses and contractors and will generate revenue for the County that will enhance the quality of services for residents, and help fund local school districts, libraries, fire districts, and more. Additionally, we're excited about the partnership between BrightNight and Central Arizona College. This should be a model for other companies looking to do business in Pinal County," said Leo Lew, Pinal County Manager. "We'd like to thank the leaders and people of Pinal County, who have been great to work with throughout this process," said Hermann. "If you are seeking a place to grow a business and serve a supportive community, there is no better place than Pinal County."
