Miracle on Main Street

In the 1940’s and 1950’s, our Main Street was a bustling Retail Center. We
had three department stores including: Gimbel Bond, Hills & Strashun-Hasty.
We also had many other stores like Alberts, Walks, Montgomery Ward and the
Dime stores. Then in the late 60’s and 70’s, the Suburbia Stores popped up.
Big J’s, Clarks, Walmart and all of the Vincennes Plaza stores. One by one the
stores on Main Street began to close.

Now in the year 2015, the Miracle on Main St. began to happen. Pioneer Oil
transformed the Old Hills Building into a first-class office building and spent
millions of dollars and brought employees to the downtown area. This was the catalyst that started
the miracle.

The two bookends of Main Street, Sixth Street the entrance and First Street the end, have now
been established. At 6th and Main the New Moon Theatre was restored into a first-class Pizza
and Taproom. It lights up the corner with its marquee and Old Chicago sign. At the end of Main,
a bronze statue of Sieur de Vincennes the French founder of Vincennes sits at the opening of the
River Walk that frames the western side of Downtown. The Riverwalk has become a beehive of
activities with Monday Night Food trucks and many other festivities such as last months Festival
Latino.

Many young people and retirees are making their home in Historic Downtown, in the many loft
apartments above the stores and in the new Riverview lofts on First street. The Main Street area
now boasts over ten restaurants, the farmers market and coming soon a new small, local grocery
store.

Main Street has also become a beehive of activities in the last several years, with events including
the first Friday Art Walks with open houses in our three Art Museums on Main Street, the Autumn
and Spring on Main festivals with bands, car shows, kid’s activities, wine and beer tasting and
much more. Many of the festivals bring huge crowds to Main Street including the Watermelon
Festival, 4th of July and the Lincoln Homecoming.

Many more projects are going on such as the multimillion-dollar restoration of the Old Pantheon
Theatre where Red Skelton first appeared. Also, the Walks Building and several more boutique
shops are now being renovated.

This miracle on Main did not just happen overnight. There were many good people involved. And I
fear to name names as not to leave anyone out. Thank you to all of the
groups, individuals and businesses that made this Miracle happen.

HOW-TO

STAIN WITH RUST-OLEUM VARATHANE STAIN

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Cover the floor and nearby surfaces with plastic or
a drop cloth.

2. Remove Old Finishes & Stain

Apply a leave-on paint stripper to the wood if it
has an old finish. Wait for the stripper to activate.
Remove old finish with a paint scraper. Lightly
sand with 120-grit sandpaper. Clean wood dust &
debris.

3. Stain the Wood

Stir the Varathane throughly before applying it to the wood. Load the Varathane onto a
foam brush or synthetic bristle brush. Drag the brush along the wood’s grain. Wait 2-3
minutes for the stain to settle in the wood. Optional, lightly scrub off any excess Varathane
with a cloth before it dries.

4. Finishing and Sealing the Stain

Wait about 1 hour for the stain to dry. Touch up surface with stain. To darken, recoat with
additional layers of stain. Finish the wood with a clear top coat to protect it from damage.
Let dry for 24 hours. Once dry to touch, you can proudly display the wood!

Ideal Kitchen Cabinet: by Ben Niehaus 1865-1951

100 year old Ideal Kitchen Cabinet on display at Niehaus Lumber Vincennes

In 1903, a furniture factory became part of
the industrial landscape in Vincennes. The
furniture company began with nine directors,
including Benjamin Niehaus. Many of the
men had experience in the furniture business.
Niehaus relocated his sawmill from Haubstadt
to Vincennes. In only five years, a company that
started with a capital stock of $25,000 tripled their
sales to $75,000. They made several different
kinds of furniture which included; dining, library,
parlor and kitchen tables. However, they became
best known for their Ideal Kitchen Cabinet made
of solid oak and sold for $11.50. In 1922, a fire destroyed the frame buildings of the manufacturing
department. The fire was only a temporary setback and they were rebuilding later that month.
Claude Gregg, the Vincennes Mayor in 1926, bought all the stock and gave him controlling
interest of the company. In 1934, Shifrcliff Industries took over the former furniture manufacturing
company and began making hickory and rattan furniture and floral baskets. Visit Niehaus Lumber
in Vincennes and checkout the 100 year old Ideal Kitchen Cabinet on display.
