The Watermelon and the Pickle

V incennes held its Annual Watermelon Festival the second weekend in
August this year. Friday night, the Battle of the Bands kicked off the
Festival at Patrick Henry Square on the National Park Grounds. Free
all you can eat watermelon, a watermelon eating contest and food booths
filled with vendors for all to enjoy. On Saturday, a baby pageant and Miss
Watermelon Pageant was held along with a watermelon toss contest. The Big
Watermelon used for our annual New Year’s Eve drop was on display.

In 1955, we bought our first forklift truck. I had been reading in the trade
magazines that the mechanical handling of building materials was the future.
Up until 1955, we hand unloaded everything – box cars of lumber, drywall and
roofing – it was very labor intensive. At that time, there were five lumber yards
in Vincennes and we were one of the smallest. The forklift changed
how we did business. We could now unload cars and trucks in full
units instead of pieces. Many of our contractor customers would
order in full units. This immediately made us the envy of the other
yards and gave us a great advantage.

This past week’s Watermelon Festival reminds me of a past
Watermelon Festival I participated in 1956. I decided to show off
our new bright yellow forklift in the parade that year. We needed
something for the forklift to do, so we decided it should hold a
giant watermelon! A platform was made and on it we sculpted a
watermelon out of chicken wire and Plaster of Paris, almost eight
feet tall. I was going to VU at the time and had met my wife to be,
Patty, and her sister Betty. They decided to ride on the platform
with the big beautiful watermelon while we drove the forklift down
the parade route. I was the driver of the forklift, of course, and boy
was I proud! As we came down Main Street we could hear people
yell, “Look at the big pickle!” Alas, our watermelon looked more like
a pickle!

Parade in 1955. This photo was taken in 1979.
