RCehsapmobneser oaftCtohme merce Awards Dinner
April 29, 2021

I dedicate these remarks to Jim McCormick ...

My father died when I was seven years old. My mother then took over the
small lumber yard on Main Street. After I graduated from Michigan State
University, my mom said, “You are now President.” We were the smallest of
the five lumber yards in town. After learning about a new concept called cash
and carry in Michigan, I decided to start it here in Vincennes. I soon heard that
one of my competitors in town said, “That young Niehaus kid is going to go broke!”

In 1961, Jim McCormick was building one of the largest houses in Vincennes at the time. He gave
me one of the biggest lumber orders I had ever received. Jim and I became good friends and
he later asked me to serve on the First Federal Bank board with him. Later we both served on
the Vincennes University board of Trustees. I, for years as chairman, and Jim, for four years. Jim
McCormick was my mentor and my good friend—I am so proud and humbled to receive this award
named after him.

I would like to thank all of the chamber members for this special honor. I would also like to thank my
wife, Patty. This year will be our 59th wedding anniversary. She has done a marvelous job of raising
our children and now our 19 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. I am amazed at the success
of my three boys and two daughters, ABCDE - Anne, Butch, Catherine, David and Eric. Now seven
of our grandchildren are full time in the Niehaus Companies and six more will be working this
summer.

I am so proud of our community and our great public and private school systems, our regional
hospital and Vincennes University. Also the tremendous growth on Hart Street, the new French
Village and what I call the “Miracle on Main Street.” All of this is happening because of many of you
here tonight. Let’s keep it up and make Knox County an even greater place to live and raise our
families!

Thank you, Pictured Right:
C. James (Jim)

C.J. McCormick Community Leader of the Year Award

Presented to Bernie Niehaus

Bernie Niehaus was presented the 2021 C. James
McCormick Community Leader Award at the Annual
Knox County Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner.
The C. James McCormick Leader of the Year award is
not only a great honor to receive, but it was an even
greater honor to have received an award that was
named after a lifelong friend of Bernie’s, James (Jim)
McCormick.

“Bernie has a passion to make Knox County a
wonderful place to live and work,” stated Jamie Neal,
president of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce.
Bernie has had a fundamental role in many boards,
including: Vice President of the Knox County
Chamber of Commerce, Vincennes University
Board of Directors, Board of Directors for the VU
Foundation, founding member of the Knox County
Development Corporation, Board of Directors
of the American National Bank and the Indiana
Lumberman’s and Building Supply Association. A key
characteristic he had on many of the organizations
was his fundraising ability.

Growing up, we watched Bernie’s, otherwise known as Papa, hard work and dedication to being a
kind man pay off. The Niehaus Family is truly blessed to have a great role model to help guide the
5th generation in making Knox County a great place to live!

A New Look For A.
B.
Niehaus Lumber in Vincennes has
undergone extensive remodeling in the
past year. Doug Mikiska, Store Manager,
Scott Charleston, Retail Store Manager,
and Sonya Embry, Paint and Merchandising
Manager, played a vital role in the remodel
of Niehaus Lumber. Besides their everyday
tasks, they put together an amazing,
hardworking team that helped us get to
where we are today.

Departments that were once lacking are
now prominent store leaders which include;
the Paint Department, Outdoor Living,
Power Tools, Plumbing, Electrical, Cleaning
Supplies, and Hardware & Fasteners. We
added over 35,000 new SKUs and are
constantly looking to find the best products
and the best prices.
Walking through Niehaus Lumber, a
humbled sense of nostalgia arises as you
look at the historic family pictures - from the
picture of Bernie, Sonie and his grandpa in
front of an old car to the current Niehaus
Family photo. Bernie smiles as he walks
down the current aisles remembering the
past and looking forward to the future.

During the remodel, we added four cash
registers, the building material counter, the

outdoor living department and many other
additions that are not pictured.

We would not be where we are today
without the amazing team we have at
Niehaus Lumber! They have worked hard
over the past year taking down pallet
racking, sorting new items, learning how to
navigate the point of sale system and so
much more. We are excited for the future at
Niehaus Lumber!

Smoked Italian Meatballs

Ingredients
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1 tsp Pepper
Cheese
1 tsp Parsley
1 lb Ground Italian Sausage
1 tsp Oregano
1 lb Ground Beef
1 tsp Crushed Red Pepper
2 Eggs
1 tsp Kosher Salt
1 tsp Onion Powder 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup Breadcrumbs

The How To’s

In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients with hands
until combined. Once all ingredients are mixed, shape the
mixture into 1-1/2 inch meatballs. Place on a parchment
lined baking sheet leaving space between each meatball.
When ready to cook, set Traeger temperature to 180 F and preheat, lid closed for 15 minutes.
For optimal flavor, use Super Smoke if available. Place the meatballs in a cast iron skillet for 20
minutes. Increase the grill temperature to 400 F and cook for an additional 10 minutes, or until
the internal temperature reaches 165 F. Serve meatballs over spaghetti noodles and top with
your favorite sauce! Note: For saucy BBQ meatballs, add sauce before cooking the additional 10
minutes and cover meatballs for a delicious saucy flavor!
