The Sticker

A lmost 90 years ago, in 1933, my grandpa Ben and my
father Francis started Niehaus Planing Mill – the origin of
our business today. Ben Niehaus was an inventive sort and
very skilled with mill machinery. Ben would be down at
the mill at 5:30 in the morning turning binder rollers for the wheat
farmers and hotbed sashes for the melon farmers in addition to
planing their rough lumber.

The most fascinating mill machine we had was the moulding
machine, also called the Sticker. The only keepsake I have from
the old mill is the head from that old Sticker. A solid brass piece
slotted to hold four knives. Hanging on the wall next to the sticker
were hundreds of knives. Grandpa Ben would sometimes spend half a day setting up the
moulding machine with certain knives on the head. Depending on what moulding he was
going to run. I especially enjoyed watching him run the wide crown moulding.

I remember working in the old mill during my grade school and high school years. I enjoyed
off-bearing boards from the 24 inch planer – but really enjoyed off-bearing the mouldings
from the “Sticker”.

New Opportunities & New Faces

Meet Kurt Seger

Production Manager - Door Mill & Top Shop Vincennes
Kurt Seger is the Production Manager for the Door Mill
and Top Shop in Vincennes. His day to day tasks keep him
very busy -- from quoting, ordering and corresponding
with stores in the Top shop to managing the everyday
operations in the Door Mill. Before working in the Door Mill
& Top Shop, Kurt worked for Kauffman Engineering for 37
years.
Kurt was born in Jasper and raised in Vincennes, IN where
he attended Lincoln High School. He graduated from
Vincennes University with an Associates degree in Science
with a focus on Industrial Drafting.
Kurt and his wife, Donna, have been married for 33 years!
They have five wonderful kids - Logan, Evan, Kristin,
Brayden and Quentin. His family is constantly growing.
Logan, 31, is married to Lacey Myers and Evan,29, is
married to Kelsey Schaller. Kristin, 27, is married to Ryan
bottoms and have a beautiful daughter Adaylyn Grace. You can pick Kurt’s truck out of a crowd
with the cursive writing on the front license plate that reads “Poppy”. Brayden, 22, is employed
at Good Samaritan Hospital and Quentin, 19, is attending Vincennes University. We can’t forget
about the most important family member, Sadie, a beautiful Shitzu-Irishsetter mix. When Kurt isn’t
working, he enjoys spending time with his growing family, deer hunting, fishing, playing golf and
chilling in the pool with a chilled beverage! He is also a member of the St Francis Xavier Parish
where he attends St. Johns and sings in the Folk Group. Kurt is easy to talk with and we are
excited to see where he leads the Door Mill and Top Shop operations!

Q. Who cut the American Flag into pieces and was honoured for doing it?

Traeger Smoked Brisket

Rub Ingredients Main Ingredients

2 tbsp Garlic Powder 1 (12-14 lb) Whole Packer

2 tbsp Onion Powder Brisket, trimmed

2 tbsp Paprika 1 1/2 c Beef Broth

2 tsp Chile Powder

1/3 c Kosher Salt

1/3 c Coarse Ground Pepper

How To

When ready to cook, set Traeger temperature to 225° F and preheat, lid closed for 15 minutes.
For optimal flavor, use Super Smoke if available. For the Rub: Mix together garlic powder, onion
powder, paprika, chili pepper, kosher salt and pepper in a small bowl. Season the brisket on all
sides with the rub. Place brisket, fat side down on grill grate. Cook brisket until it reaches an

160°F, remove from grill. Double wrap meat in aluminum foil and add the beef broth to the foil
packet. Return brisket to grill and cook until it reaches an internal temperature of 204°F, about 3
hours more. Once finished, remove from grill, unwrap from foil and let rest for 15 minutes. Slice
against the grain and serve. Helpful tip: Keep opening the lid to check the internal temp and
loosing heat? Remove the guess work from cooking with the wireless MEATER® Probe, in stock
at Niehaus Lumber Vincennes!
