British Young
Shooters’ Association

Introduction

What is BYSA?

The British Young Shooters' Association (BYSA) is a multi-discipline organisation
whose purpose is to increase the level of participation among young people.

We organise training events at Bisley Camp and other ranges around the country that
are open to young people of any age or ability level, offering excellent improvement
opportunities through training and target time.

Presently we support; Target Rifle, Historic Service Rifle, Civilian Service Rifle, Small-
bore Rifle and Gallery Rifle & Pistol shooting disciplines.

What is Fullbore Target Rifle?

Fullbore Target Rifle (TR) is a distinctively British and Commonwealth of
Nations shooting discipline that evolved from Service rifle (SR) shooting in the late
1860s, and is governed in the UK by the rules of the National Rifle Association,
UK (NRA).

Fullbore Target Rifle involves prone position single shot precision shooting using ad-
justable aperture sights at 'round bull' targets at distances from 300 to 1000 yards,
with each shot being carefully scored and analysed.

What is Civilian/Historic Service Rifle?

Civilian Service Rifle (CSR) and Historic Service Rifle (HSR) are shooting sports that are
based upon military range practices at distances from 25yds to 600yds. Practice types
include deliberate and snap-shooting, and even rundowns - running 100yds down the
range between stages.

CSR is shot with modern bolt action scoped rifles, whereas HSR is shot with historic
Second World War firearms … or even older!

Gallery Rifle

Gallery Rifle Shooting, or Gallery Rifle & Pistol, is a very popular shooting
sport throughout the world.

One of the more varied disciplines, Gallery Rifle commonly uses rifles chambered for
traditional pistol calibers such as .22 Long Rifle, .38 calibres. Typically the shooter will
competes at distances from 10m to 50m shooting from both the strong and weak
arm, in the standing, kneeling and sitting positions. Courses of fire are shot in stages
and can involve precision shooting and quick firing at turning targets that leave the
shooter with a limited time to engage the target and achieve a score.

There are four main categories; Gallery Rifle Small Bore (GRSB), Gallery Rifle Centre
Fire (GRCF), Long Barrelled Revolver (LBR) and Long Barrelled Pistols (LBP), each of
which require their own specific skills to master.

Smallbore Target Rifle

Smallbore Target Rifle shooting is an Olympic Shooting event that is governed by the
International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF), and the National Smallbore Rifle
Association within the UK.

Smallbore Target Rifle shooting involves the use of target rifles firing .22 calibre
rimfire ammunition at paper targets at distances from 25m to 100m. The practical
skills involved are very similar to those used for Fullbore Target Rifle shooting, with
the main difference being the type of rifle and ammunition used.

Shooting sports have been included at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth
of the modern Olympic movement in 1896, except for 1904 & 1928, with Smallbore
Target Rifle being a mainstay of this, particularly in recent years. The discipline
requires extreme skill, precision and mental strength to master.

Bonfire Bonanza

General

Our first event of 2017/2018, at ’Bonfire Bonanza’ we welcome new members and kick
off the new training year with introductory training for beginners and probationers
and improving individual skills at short range for more advanced members.

When? - 4th & 5th November 2017
Where? - National Shooting Centre, Bisley

Fullbore Target Rifle

The purpose of this weekend for the Fullbore Target Rifle discipline is to focus on
teaching and developing the key individual skills a target shooter requires.

The weekend will start with core skills of building a stable position, setting your sights,
essential scorecard skills and how to shoot in threes, before moving out onto the
range.

Shooting will begin at 300yds and focus on applying the four marksmanship princi-
ples consistently, in threes as you would do in competition, before eventually pro-
gressing to shoot at 500 yds.

Civilian/Historic Service Rifle

Weekend one aims to provide an introduction to the Historic Service Rifle discipline
and the firearms and courses of fire most commonly used in UK competitions.

The weekend will start off with basic dry training to cover the essentials, such as; how
to correctly and safely operate the firearms, range regulations, words of command,
and basic marksmanship principles. With a firm understanding established training
will them move out to the range at Short Siberia where you will focus on applying the
skills you have learned at 100 and 200yds in a variety of courses of fire.

On the Sunday you will really put your skills to the test as you move back to 500yds
and get your first real test of having to take into account the effect of the wind!

Gallery Rifle

This weekend aims to provide an introduction to gallery rifle shooting and some of its
short range courses of fire for Gallery Rifle Smallbore.

The weekend will start with basic training to introduce you to the discipline, the range
regulations and safety, marksmanship and the workings of the Ruger 10/22 semi
automatic .22 rifle. This will be followed by practicing basic skills in precision
shooting from standing, as well as single and double taps and string shooting on
turning targets.

On Sunday morning you will put these skills to the test in several short range matches
that are regularly shot at Gallery Rifle meetings throughout the country.

Smallbore Target Rifle

The aim of this first weekend for the Smallbore discipline is to focus on honing
individual skills. As Smallbore is probably the most precise shooting discipline perfect
application of the four marksmanship principles is paramount.

The weekend will begin with an introduction to Smallbore prone shooting and basic
fault analysis of shooter’s technique, both in dry-training sessions and whilst shooting
live at 25 yds. With basic skills polished shooters will then be introduced to 50m
prone shooting, which is the mainstay of international Smallbore shooting.

Easter Bunny Blowout

General

Our second event of the year will see our training step up a notch. Members who
were beginners on our first weekend will be taught progressive skills and engage in
advanced courses of fire, whilst our experienced members focus on skills for shooting
at longer distances and team shooting.

When? - 24th & 25th March 2018

Where? - National Shooting Centre, Bisley

Fullbore Target Rifle

Our second training weekend is a dedicated long-range training weekend, with a spe-
cific emphasis on the skills needed to succeed at long range; 800, 900 and 1000yds.

Building on those skills taught on weekend 1, the training this weekend will focus on
more advanced skills, including; wind reading, advanced plotting exercises, firing
techniques and team firing drills.. All shooting this weekend will be conducted at 900
& 1000yds to provide a good base level of knowledge in readiness for the English XX
Open meeting, in May, and NRA Imperial Matches in the summer.

Civilian/Historic Service Rifle

For the Historic Service Rifle discipline the aim of this weekend is to improve your
skills to a level where you can compete in your first National matches.

After a brief refresher of essential skills, the group will move out to the range at Short
Siberia where you will be instructed in the techniques for advanced application of fire
at 100 and 200yds, shooting deliberate, rapid and snap-shooting courses of fire.

On Sunday you will be instructed in the advanced skills required to effectively shoot
service rifles at longer ranges; judging the wind, aiming off and miss-drills, before you
move to 600yds and put those skills into practice.

At the end of this weekend you will have all the knowledge and basic skills required
for you to compete in the Phoenix Matches or NRA Imperial Service Rifle Matches.

Gallery Rifle

During this weekend we will build on your experience to introduce you to more ad-
vanced courses of fire for Gallery Rifle Smallbore with the Ruger 10/22.

The weekend will begin with some dry training to refresh your skills and to in-

troduce you to shooting from the kneeling and sitting positions, moving safely be-

tween positions and shooting from your weak arm. These skills will then be practiced

in a variety of matches shot at distances from 50m to 10m.

On the Sunday we will run through and practice some of the more advanced courses
of fire for competitions as well as the more basic short range competitions.

After this weekend you will be assessed to receive a competency card signed off to
shoot Gallery Rifle independently at the Phoenix meeting and other national com-
petitions!

Smallbore Target Rifle

With NSRA National & University BUCS competitions looming, our second weekend
focusses heavily on 50m and 100m prone competition shooting. The weekend will
cover more advanced skills, wind judgement and how to prepare mentally to ensure
you maximise your score. This will also be your first opportunity to shoot 100m prone,
where you will find the effect of the wind on the round is substantially greater.

Q. What is a probationary member?
A. As a Home Office Approved Club we have a legal obligation to ensure that all BYSA members
