Star treatment for young movie lovers

4.21pm - 30th June 2012

A PARTY of children were treated like celebrities when they were chauffeur-driven in
stretch limousines to a preview screening of the film Ice Age 4.
The lucky youngsters were the guests of The Dream Factory charity which was launched
in January 2008 by Epping mother Avril Mills, after her son, Oliver, aged nine, died from
leukaemia.
The charity has since fulfilled more than 150 dreams.
Lewis Lloyd, five, who has Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, was accompanied on the
dream journey by his mother, Vanessa, and sister Abby, 12.
Before setting off, Lewis said: "I'm going to love it!"
Abby said: "When I found out that I was going I was screaming! I told all my friends and
they were jealous."
Ice Age is a series of animated films. The fourth in the series, Ice Age: Continental Drift, is
set for release on July 13. The series follows a group of mammals surviving the
Paleolithic ice age.
Lewis's mum, Vanessa, said: "The charity is just so nice to be involved with and it's lovely
that other people can be involved too."
The charity was given 20 tickets to the screening, at The Hospital Club corporate venue in
London on Saturday, by a generous businessman who had bid for them in an auction.
Sixteen of the lucky party were able to travel to London from Epping in style.
Avril Mills said: "It was really great. The children loved it and the chance for them to travel
up to London in a stretch limousine made the day even more special."

The Dream Factory charity provided two stretch limousines to take the children to

Easy ways to complete electoral details

10.28am - 29th June 2012

RESIDENTS can complete the electoral registration process online, by text and phone.
The Elections Team at Epping Forest District Council has already received 8,000 updates
to the register via the new electronic methods and are keen to encourage more.
Returning officer Ian Willett said: "Reminder letters are about to be sent out to everyone
who has not yet responded. If there are no changes to your details, why not give the new
automated systems a try now? Respond by 12 July to ensure you don't get a reminder.
"The new freephone, internet and text response options are quick and easy. Your form
shows how to let us know that your details haven't changed this year. If you tell us by
phone, internet or text message you will get instant confirmation of your registration and
the peace of mind that you are on the electoral register for another year. You can also
use the automated system to confirm a property is empty."
He added: "Whenever possible please use the automated choices. It makes much more
sense for anyone replying with no changes to their circumstances.
"They are quick, easy for residents and save money for the council by reducing staff time
and cutting postage costs.
"You don't need to reconfirm the nationality of anyone with a pre-printed name on the
form either.
"This has already been confirmed. Only add nationality (as shown in their passport)
where you add new names to the form."
For help completing the electoral registration form contact Electoral Services, Epping
Forest District Council, Civic Offices, High Street, Epping, Essex CM16 4BZ.

Father and son in cycle ride

8.46am - 29th June 2012

A KEEN cyclist will be raising money for St Clare Hospice when he takes part in the 65-
mile Manchester to Blackpool cycle ride in memory of his late mother Melanie.
Charles Grosstephan will be joined by his father, and Melanie's husband, Rod, from
Buckhurst Hill, for the fundraising event on July 8.
Charles said: "St Clare Hospice provided wonderful care to Mum, and amazing kindness
and support to us all.
"The staff are, and will remain, truly fantastic, and I would like to thank them as best that I
can."
This is not the first time that Charles has helped at the Hastingwood hospice.
Earlier this year - on Sunday, February 5 - the day before his mother's birthday, Charles
spent the morning clearing snow at the hospice.
The ride will start at Manchester United's Old Trafford ground and finish on the South
Promenade in Blackpool. Charles' training has not gone to plan.
A few weeks ago his bike was found to have a crack in the frame. A replacement (under
warranty) is due to arrive at the weekend, leaving just a week for preparation.
In the past, Charles has twice participated in the Royal British Legion's London to Paris
bike ride with his parents.
It is only appropriate that he should take his father along for the ride to Blackpool.

Concert raises money for Evie

9.03am - 28th June 2012

STUDENTS at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, took to the stage to raise money for
five-month-old Evie Shears.
The 'Our Night for Evie' concert was also an opportunity for the school to say farewell to
Head of Music Ginette Brown who is leaving the High Road school this summer after five
years to take on a new role at Wanstead High School.
Evie was starved of oxygen at birth leaving her with Severe Hypoxic damage (significant
brain damage in many areas). She also has Retinoblastoma in both eyes and is
undergoing six vigorous chemotherapy sessions at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Ginette is close friends with Evie's parents Aimey, a former teacher at West Hatch, and
James. Evie's grandparents Laura and Larry Ford were at last night's concert where Mr
Ford gave an emotional thank you to Ginette and all the students and staff involved with
the event which raised £2,300 thanks to ticket sales, a raffle and a collection around the
school during the week.
The concert featured past and present students who performed a wide ranging
programme which again highlighted the school's great musical talents.
There were solo and choir performances as well as items by student musicians and the
Year 8 steel band.
Among the past pupils returning for the evening were Britain's Got Talent runner-up
Charlotte Jaconelli and Sonny Jay, of the Loveable Rogues, and X-Factor singer John
Wilding. Both Charlotte and John joined the school choir for one of the items.
Ginette said: "The event was truly amazing and a real team effort! I would like to thank all
staff, parents, friends and ex-students who returned to celebrate my fifth and final year as
Head of Music and to support Evie.
"We are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by all who attended, enabling us to raise
a total of £2,300. It was a truly special evening that I will remember always and I feel
honoured to be in a position to organise such an event for a dear friend. Please continue
to follow Evie's progress at www.enablingevie.co.uk."
Ginette added: "The West Hatch Music Department have shared many amazing
experiences including performances at Guildhall and The Royal Festival Hall, London,
and I have watched many students go on to achieve success at universities across the
country as well as at top colleges for both music and the performing arts.
"I leave West Hatch with many life-long memories and wish everyone every success for
the future."

District prepares for Olympic torch

4.32pm - 27th June 2012

SCHOOLS across the district have been making flags ahead of the arrival of the Olympic
Flame which is expected to be greeted by large crowds when it reaches Waltham Abbey
early on Saturday, July 7.
The Flame will be making its way from the Wheatsheaf pub on Crooked Mile, at 8.20am
along the pedestrianised Sun Street, across Market Square to rejoin the vehicle convoy
by the Abbey Church from where the bells will ring out as the Flame is carried through.
Among the torch bearers will be Steven Basing, from Bumbles Green, and Olympic
swimmer Suki Brownsdon who represented Great Britain four times from 1980 to 1992 in
Moscow, Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona.
From Highbridge Street, the Torch heads off down Station Road into the Lee Valley White
Water Centre for a descent down the Olympic rapids.
Entry to the White Water Centre is by ticket only but a whole morning of free community-
based activities and celebrations are planned in Sun Street and the Abbey Gardens to
make the Relay a truly memorable day.
People living along the route are being asked to move vehicles or other obstructions to
give the crowds the best possible view.
A cavalcade of sponsor vehicles will proceed the Flame.
People are advised to stand on the kerb nearest the approaching convoy to enjoy the
best view of the show and receive give-aways from the three sponsors, Coca-Cola,
Samsung and Lloyds TSB.
All Epping Forest District Council pay and display car parks will be free in Waltham Abbey
while Tesco is providing extra free parking in the upper car park of the Sewardstone Road
store.
Anyone planning to drive is advised to arrive early. Local residents are encouraged to
walk or use public transport.
A district council spokesman said: "There is bound to be a bit of disruption to local roads.
If you run a business or need to use your car on Saturday morning, it would probably be a
good idea to make contingency plans.
"Waltham Abbey Market will be on as usual. Local shops, pubs and restaurants may find
very large crowds keeping them busy throughout the morning."
As well as the convoy-based media, BBC Essex will be broadcasting live from Epping
Forest District Museum in Sun Street.
As the Torch is carried down Sun Street, it crosses from East to West on the Greenwich
Meridian Line.
The museum is going to use the East Meets West theme for a special exhibition.
As soon as the Torch route is clear, a Chinese Lion Dance will snake its way from the
museum down Sun Street.
Halting at the Meridian Line, it will meet the Epping Pipe Band that will have marched
from the town hall, leading civic dignitaries back to the museum where Chinese artistes
will be putting on a street display of Ribbon Dance, Tai Chi, traditional Chinese music,
Peacock dance and Shouling Kung Fu.
As well as the entertainment in Sun Street, a series of fun activities are planned in the
Abbey Gardens including 'Play in the Park', family sports activities, a one-mile circuit
walk, performances including Funky Voices Choir, hand-bell ringing and Make A Move
dance event, along with Tai Chi demonstrations and come and try. Many local primary
schools have been taking part in a 'Countries of the World' flag-making project and will be

Charity makes boy's dream come true

7.30am - 27th June 2012

A CHIGWELL boy has seen his dream come true after a charity paid for a log cabin
games room to be built in his garden.
Thomas Lee, 14, who has Down's Syndrome with added complications, shares a
bedroom with his 13-year-old brother, James, and desperately wanted his own space.
His mum, Tracy, was aware of The Dream Factory and contacted the charity to see if it
could help.
The dream is the 150th to be fulfilled by the charity which was founded by Epping mother
Avril Mills whose nine-year-old son, Oliver, died from leukaemia.
To mark the 150th dream landmark, the cabin was officially opened by the charity's
patron and 'Allo Allo' actress Vicki Michelle MBE.
Thanking The Dream Factory, Thomas's mum Tracy, of The Lowe, Chigwell, said: "I can't
thank them enough for what they have done to make Thomas's dream come true.
"They have been absolutely remarkable and all through the process of the work they
telephoned me to see how things were going."
Tracy added: "The cabin has completely changed Thomas's life. It is somewhere for him
to go and have his own space.
"He's just really happy. He said to me 'I'm lost for words, I don't know what to say'. For
him to say that I know that it means everything to him.
"He comes home from school and goes straight up there (to the cabin). He's like a
completely different child."
Charity founder Avril Mills said: "We are so proud to have helped so many children.
"We have recently been inundated with requests and are currently working on more than
30 further dreams."

Pottery talk to Probus club

7.30am - 27th June 2012

A TALK on collecting pottery was given to the summer lunch meeting of the Probus Club
of Epping by guest speaker Keith Neat.
He explained that he first became interested in pottery when, as a young boy, he helped
clean the ornaments in the family home.
He became particularly interested in the Watcombe Terra Cotta Clay Co Ltd formed in
1865 by a Mr Allen who found deposits of local orange clay on his estate which proved
excellent material for pottery making.
The Watcombe Pottery was the first of a group of Torquay potteries which produced
souvenir items for the seaside holiday market.
Keith became particularly interested in items of Watcome Pottery decorated with drawings
of a cottage and a motto the reverse and now owns many pieces ranging from inkwells to
tea sets and including a very large tea pot. Club member Phil Jones gave a vote of

STUDENTS at West Hatch High School are preparing for their own Olympics when teams
will be representing 46 countries in a range of events.
Teams - featuring students from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 - were paired with their
countries when the draw was made in the school hall yesterday (Monday) and broadcast
live via a webcast to the teams in their classroom.
The team numbers were picked out of one bowl by head teacher Frances Howarth with
the team captains then picking the country they will represent.
Team members then had to design their country's flag which will be paraded at a special
opening ceremony on July 16, and design t-shirts depicting their country's national
colours.
Teams will compete in a range of events including archery, at Gilwell Park, cycling at
Redbridge Cycling Centre and hockey at Ashton playing fields, Woodford.
Various events will also be staged at the High Road school.
The school's head of PE, Jon Redding, who hosted the live draw, said: "It is giving the
students to opportunity to find out about the countries participating in the Olympics and
also compete in a number of sports."
Each team will have to give a one-minute presentation highlighting their country's
involvement in previous Olympic Games as part of the school's opening ceremony.
Events will be held from July 16 to 20.
The West Hatch Olympic Games are being sponsored by local estate agent Phillip Leigh.

MP and councillor visit Stansted Airport

4.46pm - 25th June 2012

STANSTED'S Olympics preparations came under the spotlight on Friday when Epping
Forest MP Eleanor Laing paid a visit to see how the airport intends to play its part during
this year's Games.
The Epping Forest MP, who was accompanied by Essex County Council's Deputy
Cabinet Member for the 2012 Games councillor Valerie Metcalfe, enjoyed a behind the
scenes tour of the airport, a briefing with managing director Nick Barton and an update
with Stansted's Olympics co-ordinator Marie Rahim.
Mrs Laing said: "The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are a marvellous
opportunity to show what Essex has to offer and can provide a real boost to jobs,
businesses and in-bound tourism.
"My visit to Stansted demonstrated that the airport is fully prepared and ready to offer the
best possible welcome to all those travelling through the airport this summer."
Marie Rahim said: "We were delighted to welcome Eleanor and show her how we are
gearing up for the Games.
"Stansted is delighted to be an official provider and is very proud to be one of the first to
say 'hello' to the thousands of visitors and spectators arriving in the United Kingdom."
In the run-up to the Games the airport has been working closely with a wide range of local
community groups and charity organisations, the tourism industry, local authorities and
business partners to help create a sense of fun and excitement. In partnership with Essex
County Council, Stansted played a vital role in the Essex cultural festival 'Sparks will fly in
Essex'.
The event saw larger than life mythical champion Boreas arrive at Stansted aboard a
helicopter and begin a journey through Essex before meeting up with the Olympic torch
relay in Chelmsford in early July.

occasion which was attended by many local people who came together to thank Her
Majesty for her marvellous achievements through music and prayer."

thanks to the sterling efforts of the organisers who had to put up stalls around the village
hall car park because of the rain-hit state of the field.
A bumper crowd turned out for the event, which raises money for St Clare Hospice, and
featured a range of stalls and sideshows as well as the Amethyst Flames Majorettes,
Sumo Suits wrestling competition, Total Self Defence professional jujitsu and a display

into a house in Chigwell.
The incident happened at a property in Lyndhurst Rise shortly after 2.30am yesterday

was, whether the men knew their victims or what weapons they were in possession of.
"We are still interviewing the victims to see if there is any connection. In the meantime
we're in need of witnesses who saw the initial break-in and then three men leaving the
property within 30 minutes later."

Friends to cycle from London to Paris

8.33am - 24th June 2012

FRIENDS Rod Medden and Neil Allen are taking part in a London to Paris cycle ride next
week to raise money for St Clare Hospice.
The pair will set off from Tower Bridge on Thursday (June 28) for the 283-mile adventure
to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Rod, from Harlow, said: "We decided at the turn of the year to set ourselves this personal
challenge and at the same time see if we could raise some money for St Clare Hospice.
"They were very supportive in lending equipment such as a medical bed, stands and
furniture which allowed the living room of our family home to be turned into a bedroom for
my dad.
"In conjunction with Marie Curie this meant he was able to come home from hospital for
what proved to be the last week of his life."
As part of their training regime, the pair have been cycling to work, with loaded panniers,
completing a 40-mile trip each time, when their schedules allowed.
They have also been doing long rides at weekends.
Neil, who lives in Bishop's Stortford, plays Sunday league football and Rod runs with
Harlow Running Club. Rod said: "We are happy with our fitness and although fully aware
of the personal and physical challenges that lie ahead, we are in no doubt that we will
make it to Paris on July 1."
The pair aim to cover 83 miles on the first day to get themselves to Folkestone.
The second day (Friday, June 29) will see them travel via Eurotunnel to Calais and then
on to Amiens (93 miles away).
The third day takes them to Pontoise (84 miles) before completing the 23 miles into Paris
on the fourth day (Sunday, July 1).

surrounding areas, bringing together talented gardeners, local businesses and experts to
highlight the enjoyment gardening can provide.
"We believe that gardening is for everyone and encourage gardeners of all levels
including beginners to enter the competition.
"We hope our show will encourage gardeners everywhere to pick up their spades and get
dug in."

Thieves steal cars during house break-ins

4.37pm - 23rd June 2012

TWO cars were stolen from outside houses after the keys were found indoors during
break-ins at properties in Loughton.
The first burglary happened when the front door of a house on The Greens Close was
forced between 2.45pm and 4pm on Monday (June 18).
The keys to a Mercedes, which was parked outside the property, were stolen from the
hallway.
Investigating Officer Detective Constable Adam Goodger said: "There would have been a
number of parents milling around on this and nearby roads at the time of this burglary,
picking up their children from the local schools.
"We would urge them to recall whether they saw any suspicious or unusual activity and to
call in with it."
A forensic examination of the scene was conducted and house-to-house enquiries carried
out. DC Goodger added: "We are also reminding people that car keys should also be kept
out of sight and not left around to tempt the intruder who does successfully invade the
home."
The second burglary happened between 10am and 11.30am yesterday (Friday) when
thieves smashed their way into a house on Traps Hill and stole jewellery and a number of
wedding anniversary-engraved glass and silverware.
The owner's car was also stolen after the keys were left on display inside the house. The
car was dumped on a nearby street.
Investigating Officer Detective Constble Sarah-Louise Austin, said: "A lot of the items
stolen were of sentimental value to the couple and the break-in has left them very upset
and anxious.
"This burglary was committed within a very short timeframe so it demonstrates that
criminals don't need long to ruin your live.
"We are appealing for those people who may have seen others acting suspiciously on this
road mid-Friday morning."
A forensic examination of the house was completed as were house-to-house enquiries.
The car was also forensically-examined to ascertain whether the thieves had left any

Hospice recognises volunteers' contribution

8.59am - 23rd June 2012

TWENTY-seven volunteers who have given a total of 230 years' service to St Clare
Hospice have been presented with long-service awards.
Two volunteers - June Coyne and Letitia Berry - received awards in recognition of 20
years' service to the Hastingwood-based charity.
The presentations were made by Harlow MP Robert Halfon at a special volunteers tea
afternoon hosted by hospice chairman Michael Chapman on Friday (June 22). Letitia
Berry, from Epping, is involved with the hospice's trading company and the Epping
Friends group.
For about ten years, from 1992, she served as a trustee. Letitia said: "I feel very
privileged to have been associated with the hospice for so long and have the opportunity
to work with so many dedicated people and help so many families.
"St Clare has been so successful because it's a local charity and people can see where
their money is spent."
June Coyne, 78, of Waterhouse Moor, Harlow, started her volunteering with St Clare
helping in the day centre. She now volunteers one afternoon a week manning the
reception.
Explaining how she first became involved with St Clare, June said: "I came for counselling
and I just really wanted to put something back because they had helped me.
"It just opened up other avenues of friendship. It's really nice. The people are just lovely."
June said she has no plans to give up volunteering just yet.
"I'll go on as long as I can but when that voice says to me 'no more' then I'll stop doing it,"
she said.
Mary Love, from Ongar, received an award in recognition of her 15 years' service.
She said: "I was looking for a local charity to support and at the time I'd heard of St Clare
and it was about that time that it was being promoted in Ongar as their local hospice.
"In 2003 she helped form the Ongar Friends group and now organises fundraising events
and street collections.
Mary said: "Most people either know of someone or have had a relative who has received
care in some shape or form from the hospice.
"Its care is just so different to hospital care. It's more personal. There is just a great
affection for St Clare."
Mr Chapman said: "To have more than 500 volunteers devoting their spare time to the
cause of St Clare Hospice is an amazing achievement and shows the caring nature of the
people of west Essex to the hospice and all our friends and neighbours who have been in
need of our care."
He added: "Today it was a privilege to give awards to two ladies who have volunteered
for over 20 years with the hospice."
Chris Crump, the hospice's voluntary services manager, said: "As a very busy hospice
service it would be impossible for us to function without the dedication and support of our
volunteers who operate alongside staff in a complementary way engaging in all aspects of
our hospice, retail and fundraising work.
"Without this collaboration we would be unable to sustain our services or develop the high
level of care we offer patients, their families and carers.
"Throughout the year St Clare Hospice volunteers have given 101,760 hours of their time,
a wage equivalent of £1.4m!"
Hospice chief executive Tanya Curry said: "I have always enjoyed working alongside
volunteers; the commitment and enthusiasm volunteers bring to a charity is incredibly
important and valued.
"Since becoming chief executive late last year, I've met with groups of volunteers and
found out first-hand what it is they love about the hospice. Overwhelming it was the sense
that St Clare is 'special' and important to their community.
"I thank each and every one of our volunteers for all they contribute each year and
particularly congratulate those receiving special long service awards."
Award recipients were:
Five years' service: Linda Smith (Epping shop), Theresa Walstow (reception), Margaret
Moss, Sylvia Norris and Susan Bell (Buckhurst Hill shop), Bozena Cisziewicz (Debden

Patients being prescribed exercise

12.38pm - 22nd June 2012

DOCTORS in the area are working with Everyone Active to support recovery and
rehabilitation of patients.
The centres in Epping, Waltham Abbey, Loughton and Ongar are offering sessions for
patients who suffer from depression, anxiety, stress, high blood pressure, diabetes,
osteoarthritis, obesity, asthma, COPD (lung disease) and cardiac conditions.
Regular exercise is known to help people with these conditions but it is important that
expert guidance is given initially so the right form and amount of exercise is taken to suit
each person.
Patients with one or more of these conditions will be referred to their nearest Everyone
Active leisure centre where they will be offered a ten-week programme personalised to
meet their needs.
The programme will comprise GP referral classes including low impact circuits,
cardiac/COPD rehabilitation classes, gym programmes, swimming, group exercise
classes and personalised nutritional support.
Chris McCarthy, general manager at Everyone Active, Waltham Abbey, said: "Exercise is
widely accepted as an excellent way to help recover from many illnesses and can be
used to improve and manage many other health conditions.

01/08/2012

Everything Epping Forest Page 10 of 27

"However, many people - especially those who have a health condition - can be nervous
or unsure which exercise to do.
"Our GP referral programme will help people understand the best exercise for their
recovery and rehabilitation and over ten weeks our expert trainers will develop
programmes and offer on-going support to ensure they progress steadily.
"The aim is that after the ten weeks, our referred members will be exercising
independently and will have sufficient knowledge to continue exercising to enjoy the long-
term health benefits, increased strength, flexibility and a deep sense of well-being."
The GP referral scheme starts on July 1.
All patients referred will be entitled to join the ten-week scheme and then receive a
discount on monthly membership if they choose to sign up as Everyone Active members.

Firefighters set strike dates

12.38pm - 21st June 2012

SENIOR Essex Fire and Rescue Service officers remain confident the need for strike
action can be averted, despite the announcement from the FBU of five strike dates.
Chief Fire Officer David Johnson says talks with ACAS will go ahead on Monday and he
hopes union officials will accept the offer from senior managers to attend with whatever
representation they need or want.
Strike dates announced today are June 28 (10am-6pm), July 7 (4am-5am - the day of the
Olympic torch relay in Essex), July 18 (9am) until July 19 (9am), August 18 (5pm-7pm)
and October 18 (11am-4pm).
Yesterday Mr Johnson reassured the public that Essex County Fire and Rescue Service
had resilient contingency plans for any periods of strike action.
More than 100 Essex County Fire and Rescue Service firefighters have signed resilience
contracts guaranteeing their availability to provide cover during any periods of staff
shortage and many of the service's retained stations have indicated they will continue to
provide life-saving cover during any strike.

School takes sports honours

12.20pm - 21st June 2012

Chelmsford School Sports Partnership Olympic-themed event.
Year 2 pupils from 44 schools across the Chelmsford and Ongar area took part in the
sports superstars event featuring a series of events.
Schools were awarded points for their achievements.
Because of the differing numbers of pupils competing from schools the trophy for the
winning school is awarded to the school with the highest average score, which was
Shelley.
Shelley pupil Demi Reddin received the trophy for the most individual points. She
achieved 99 points and was first out of 1,400 pupils.
Each school represented a country and took part in an opening ceremony. Shelley
represented USA.
Class teacher Suzy Newman said: "This is a fantastic achievement for our pupils and we
are very proud of them all."
Head teacher Lesley Lewis said: "In this Olympic year it is exciting to think that Demi may

Golf day raises £45,000 for hospice

11.46am - 21st June 2012

THE 18th annual St Clare Hospice Golf Day organised and supported by Home Counties
developer Weston Homes has helped to raise £45,000 for St Clare Hospice.
The money raised takes Weston Homes closer to their commitment, in their 25th
anniversary year, towards raising £500,000 for St Clare Hospice through their Golf Day
events.
In total 50 teams of golfers from across the country took part to help raise funds for the
palliative care provider St Clare Hospice.
St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist care for people living with terminal or life
limiting illnesses in west Essex and the east Hertfordshire border.
The hospice cares for patients and their families, providing physical, social, psychological
and spiritual support.
Bob Weston, chairman and chief executive for Weston Homes, said: "St Clare Hospice is
a cause that is very close to our hearts at Weston Homes and we are proud to have been
the main event sponsor of the Golf Day for over a decade now.
"I am delighted that we have been able to raise a total of £45,000 this year, which I know
will greatly help the hospice continue the fantastic work that they do all year round.
"It also takes us nearer to Weston Homes' commitment in our 25th anniversary, towards
raising £500,000 for St Clare Hospice through our golf days.
"This year, there was another fantastic turnout on the day, with 50 teams of four taking
part and I want to thank everyone who either attended or contributed in some way to such
a worthy cause."
The popular event, which was held at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in Essex, attracted
teams of four who competed in an 18-hole Stableford Team Competition for a number of
prizes, which included a 42" TV and wireless outdoor speakers, and there was also the
chance for golfers to win an Audi or a BMW if they scored a hole in one on the 18th hole.
World Snooker and Leyton Orient chairman Barry Hearn was amongst those taking part.
The winners on the courses were Ideal Standard Map Constable and Pannell
Developments respectively, with Pannell Developments winning the overall prize of The
Daniel Robinson Cup.
Hospice chief executive Tanya Curry said: "It was an amazing day. We are so fortunate to
have such great continued support from Weston Homes; something we know is very
important to them and they feel passionately about.
"To achieve the amount that was raised in one day, in current times is a huge
achievement.
"To date, over the last 18 years, the money raised from the Weston Homes' golf days has
paid for over 16 weeks of specialist in-patient care which would have benefited over 60
patients and their families."

She received a letter some weeks ago saying she had been nominated but admits she
then forgot about it, until last week.
Speaking to Everything Epping Forest, Mrs Hawkins said: "I had a letter six to eight
weeks ago from the Cabinet Office. When I first saw the letter I thought 'what have I
done?
"I really didn't think it would come to anything. It just said I'd been nominated."

"Then Cyril (her husband) listened to the next bulletin and they mentioned me on that
one."
Cyril tried to ring Shirley on her mobile phone but it was switched off and it was only when
she took a break from shopping that she learned of the good news.
Mrs Hawkins said: "I was in Tesco in Barkingside and bought a Telegraph. I picked it up
and sat and had a cup of coffee and went from the bottom of the list up.
"I read 'Mrs Shirley Hawkins' and said 'Oh my God!'
"'I'm still gobsmacked. It really only hit home today with the reaction at work."
Mrs Hawkins, who was nominated by colleagues at the district council, has worked in

Praise for school after inspection

01/08/2012

Everything Epping Forest Page 16 of 27

4.54pm - 14th June 2012

WEST Hatch High School's headteacher has praised the efforts of everyone involved with
the school following its latest visit by Ofsted inspectors.
In the last few weeks the school has gained another national award - this time for E-
Safety, to add to existing recognition in fields as diverse as Information Technology,
Healthy Living, Eco andf International Schools, Investors in People, Growing our own
Leaders and - importantly for 2012 - Living the Olympic & Paralympic Values.
In a statement, the school said: "Unfortunately our experience of the new Ofsted
framework reflects that of many schools nationally. Inspection teams now have a much
tighter focus which does not take into account all the enrichment activities and wider
opportunities schools like West Hatch offer to its pupils - and at which they excel.
"Despite last summer achieving its highest ever five A*-C grades at GCSE (with 80% of
all pupils achieving this standard) and the Sixth Form recording its best ever A-Level
results, Ofsted instead chose to focus on the slight dip last year in Maths whilst
acknowledging that current attainment is back on track for Year 11 to be above average -
a projection of 76% A-C in Maths with over 70% predicted to achieve A*-C in English."
Inspectors noted that behaviour around school is orderly; students are polite and
courteous, attendance above the national average and still rising whilst instances of
bullying and racism are extremely rare.
They praised the Senior Leadership Team for taking a strong lead in monitoring and
improving the performance of both staff and pupils.
They also noted that in the Sixth Form standards continue to rise with increasing
proportions of students attaining A*, A and B grades.
It was also acknowledged that the school's main curriculum is well supported by an
outstanding range of National and International extra-curricular activities and visits.
Senior and Middle leaders have already renewed their focus on matching the needs of
different individuals and groups of students to specially dedicated learning experiences.
They are ensuring that the KS3 curriculum prepares students effectively for KS4 & that
good quality teaching maximises students skills of learning. Ofsted noted that Senior
Leaders have acted swiftly to deal with some instances of weaker leadership and
teaching.
The school is confident of being fully staffed in September and is delighted with the
calibre of candidates it has been able to recruit.
Headteacher Frances Howarth said: "We were pleased that Ofsted recognised much of
the good work underway at the school and we are totally committed to working on the
areas identified in the report to improve still further the educational experience we can
offer our students.
"We are looking forward to this year results which we believe will show that all the hard
work teachers, pupils, staff and governors have put in will come to fruition."

at Alderton Infant and Junior Schools in Loughton.

She said: "We have been overwhelmed by the success of the nursery so far and we are
really looking forward to carrying over our existing principles and great care standards for
the children of the Alderton Schools and surrounding areas."
Barley Barn Club is committed to providing children with great play-based opportunity and
a safe and caring place to start the day and to wind down after school by enjoying the
many activities on offer and a quiet space to make a start on homework.
There will be plenty of activities for children to participate including board games, quizzes,
circle time, music, arts and crafts, construction toys, free play, reading and much more.

it is my aim to provide a happy, caring place for children enabling parents to work whilst
enjoying the confident that their children are being cared for in a safe, stimulating
environment."

clinical work with mental health giant MIND, Emma Mills has formed a first of its kind
business which strives to deliver performance-related psychology together with expert
knowledge of psycho-therapeutic intervention to the fashion, media and entertainment
community.
Emma said: "I have been involved in Psychology for nearly ten years now and I believe
passionately that the development of our minds should be an empowering, energising
and proud experience which is available to anyone who realises it can be theirs.
"The value of cultivating inner confidence and self-concept cannot be under-estimated if

diverse, rewarding and challenging the industry can be.

Council set to appoint new chief executive

5.12pm - 13th June 2012

COUNCILLORS will meet on Monday to approve the appointment of a new chief
executive for Epping Forest District Council.
Glen Chipp, 52, has a background in local government, and also in newspapers, travel

The appointment is being recommended by a cross-party recruitment panel following a
rigorous selection process which included two days of tests and interviews earlier in
June.

01/08/2012

Everything Epping Forest Page 17 of 27

Mr Chipp was one of five shortlisted candidates after 43 potential candidates applied for
the post.
Councillor Jon Whitehouse, chairman of the committee for the appointment of the chief
executive said: "We were fortunate to be able to choose from a high quality field. All of the
shortlisted candidates were of a very high calibre.
"After a rigorous selection process Glen Chipp was the unanimous choice of the
appointment committee."
Formal confirmation of appointment to the £112,000 post rests with a special meeting of
all 58 councillors on Monday.
Mr Chipp is a chartered accountant with an honours degree in chemistry and a
background in the holiday and airline business who moved into a high profile public sector
role with Bath and North East Somerset Unitary Council.
His CV includes senior roles with Deloitte, ICI, Whirlpool and the regional newspaper
group Thomson.
From there he moved to The Scotsman, one of Scotland's leading newspapers.
He entered tourism and aviation as managing director of Inspiration Holidays, became
Group Aviation Director for Thomas Cook Ltd then Managing Director of Thomas Cook
Airlines UK.
Mr Chipp briefly became the chief operating officer with Save and Invest Ltd. He is also a
member of the board of governors at the City of Bath College.
If councillors agree the recommendations of the appointment committee, Mr Chipp is
expected to join the council in the early autumn. Derek Macnab will continue to act as
chief executive in the interim.
Council leader Chris Whitbread said: "Epping Forest District Council is one of the most
efficient, low-tax councils in Essex. We are looking to build on that record. The next few
years are unlikely to be easy.
"The economy continues to struggle and there will be more savings in public spending.
Glen is not a typical local government officer. He has wide-ranging private sector
expertise as well as experience at the highest levels in the public sector.
"I am sure that if the recommendations of the recruitment committee are accepted, Glen
will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to one of the most demanding roles in local
government."
Mr Whitbread added: "I would also like to thank Derek Macnab for the terrific job he has
done as acting chief executive.
"He is held in the highest regard by councillors and we look forward to the significant
contribution he will continue to make as the council moves forward."

Town show cancellation - "a sad decision"

7.46am - 13th June 2012
UPDATED 5.34pm - 13th June 2012

EPPING mayor Jon Whitehouse has said it was a "sad decision" that had to be taken to
cancel Sunday's Epping Jubilee Town Show.
The town council took the decision yesterday following an inspection of the Stonards Hill
recreation ground which was considered too wet for the event to be staged.
Speaking to Everything Epping Forest, Mr Whitehouse said: "We were all looking forward
to the Town Show so it's a sad decision to have to make, especially given the hard work
that has gone into preparing for the event. However the recent rainfall means the playing
fields are sodden and cannot cope with the traffic generated by the Town Show.
"Today's (Tuesday) forecast suggests further heavy rain before the weekend so there is
no sign of the weather improving in time to dry out the ground.
"By giving five days notice we aim to minimise the inconvenience to exhibitors and
participants."
He added: "Given that the Friends of Swaines Green May Fayre was also washed out last
month I sincerely hope we can look forward to a sunnier July and a dry Epping Festival on
Saturday, July 14."
Town clerk Ash Tadjrishi said: "Council had been gearing up for what was set to be the
biggest show yet.
"Much hard work had gone in to organising the event, not least of all by the many
organisations and groups that had been looking forward to celebrating the local
community in Jubilee year.
"As with many similar events across the country we have simply been beaten by the
weather."

Woman rescued from overturned car

Two Loughton fire crews were called out at 10.20am today and used specialist cutting

Hospital friends donate special beds

8.00am - 11th June 2012

THE League of Friends of St Margaret's Hospital has purchased four specialist beds to be
used by dementia patients at the Epping hospital.
The beds are being used in Poplar and Plane wards at St Margaret's.
Regularly throughout the year, requests from wards and departments are made to the
Friends of St Margaret's - some for small items such as computer software, some for
much larger and expensive equipment.
In the past two years 12 pressure-relieving mattresses have been purchased by the
Friends along with a mobile cardiac monitor which has been of particular use to the Rapid
Assessment Unit now based at the site.
Rehabilitation equipment has been purchased for the use of stroke patients in Beech
Ward.
Over many years the League of Friends of St Margaret's Hospital has depended on the
local community to help raise the money needed to continue with these gifts.
Now in difficult times, cuts to the hospital's budget have been deep.
It is certain that more and more requests will be made, as the NHS is increasingly unable
to supply everything the hospital needs to continue to its vital work, for both inpatients and
outpatients.
The Friends of St. Margaret's holds events during the year, the next being the ever-
popular summer lunch on August 19.
Support is also welcomed from local groups and individuals.
Can you hold fundraising events for St Margaret's or mention the charity legacies and
present lists?
The Friends will have a display stand at the Epping Town Jubilee Show on Sunday (June
17).

School receives e-safety award

6.15pm - 7th June 2012

ASSESSORS from the South West Grid for Learning visited West Hatch High School to
review the school's e-safety provision.
The assessors met staff, parents and carers, governors and students and were pleased
to find the school provides a high level of protection for users of the new technologies.
The South West Grid for Learning Trust provides the internet connection and a range of
other services to schools across the south west region and is in the forefront of national
developments in e-safety.
To enhance these services, they have developed a tool to help schools address e-safety
issues, not least the changes to Ofsted inspections, which include a stronger focus on
safeguarding.
The online tool allows schools to evaluate their e-safety policy and practice and then
suggests how the school might do more to protect young people and staff.
To apply for the 360 degree safe E-Safety Mark, schools have to reach a series of
benchmark levels when they complete the online self-review.
The evidence is then verified by a visit from experienced assessors.
The prime benefit of using the review and applying for the E-Safety Mark is that it does
not focus on the individual aspects of e-safety such as technological solutions, but instead
it integrates e-safety into school policy and the curriculum, challenging teachers and
managers in the school to think about their provision and its continual evolution.
Schools are expected to show that they have provided a high standard of e-safety
education and awareness for all staff, students and also for parents and carers, to ensure
that these users of the new technologies can be safe online - whether they are in school,
in their homes or out and about using mobile phones or other handheld devices.
Following their visit the Assessors reported that the school's Leadership Team and

01/08/2012

Everything Epping Forest Page 20 of 27

Governors have firmly grasped the opportunity to make significant development in the
area of E-Safety.
They have:
* Enabled a dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledgeable Head of ICT to take the lead as
designated E-Safety Leader
* Supported plans wholeheartedly with personal involvement of both the headteacher and
chairman of governors in the work of the E-Safety Committee.
Areas of strength include:
* Detailed policies and procedures with a review cycle in place
* Good infrastructure and systems infrastructure and systems
* E-Safety education integrated into each year group with on-going curriculum
development taking place
* Variety of communication channels in place which are appreciated by parents and
carers
* Good ethos of trust and openness between staff and students and a sharing of expertise
between staff
* Differentiated support for example for vulnerable or SEN students to allow them to
access resources.
Ron Richards, Lead Assessor for the 360 degree safe E-Safety Mark, congratulated the
school on its success and said it was re-assuring to know the school had put a lot of
thought and effort into improving the on-line safety of the staff and young people, by
addressing these important safeguarding issues.

Volunteers save hospice over £1m a year

5.55pm - 6th June 2012

VOLUNTEERS who give their time freely to St Clare Hospice are worth well over £1m to
the charity.
This week - June 1-7 - is national Volunteers Week and the Hastingwood charity is taking
the opportunity to again thank the hundreds of people who support the hospice.
Volunteers save the hospice money in so many ways - by manning its reception, helping
in its seven charity shops, giving their time in the day unit and raising hundreds of
thousands of pounds through a whole host of events throughout the year.
Volunteers Week is an annual campaign which celebrates the fantastic contribution that
millions of volunteers make across the UK.
At St Clare Hospice the week will be marked with celebrations in each department, to
thank the charity's 530 volunteers who give their time generously throughout the year.
Chris Crump, the hospice's voluntary services manager, said: "As a very busy hospice
service it would be impossible for us to function without the dedication and support of our
volunteers who operate alongside staff in a complimentary way engaging in all aspects of
our hospice, retail and fundraising work.
"Without this collaboration we would be unable to sustain our services or develop the high
level of care we offer patients, their families and carers.
"Throughout the year St Clare Hospice volunteers have given 101,760 hours of their time,
a wage equivalent of £1.4m!"

Students perform mental health plays

5.31pm - 6th June 2012

YEAR 10 drama students at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, have performed four brief
plays about mental and emotional health for an NHS drama competition.
The finals of the North Essex Partnership's competition will be at the University of Essex
on September 12.
The West Hatch plays were:
- Tell me a bit about your self - about bipolar, PTSD, schizophrenia (and therapy!) - with
an excellent portrayal of voices as two performers locked together, back to back and
spinning round
- How are you - on paranoia, self-harming and depression
- Boy Interrupted - a very clever contrast about "loony Louis" at school and the students
reflecting on how mental ill health was already in their lives, from dementia to imaginary
friends
- Alex has ... a collection of stories about eating disorders, schizophrenia, depression /
anxiety.
The finalists will be announced at the end of July.
North Essex Partnership chief executive Andrew Geldard said: "The drama competition is
to help young people talk about mental wellbeing and to watch out for one another.
"Around half of lifetime mental illness starts at age 14. Early intervention works and
people need to seek help as quickly as they would do for a broken leg.
"Stigma - a fear of what people will think, and a fear that nothing can be done- holds them
back and this needs to change.
"West Hatch, very typically, threw themselves into this task with energy and commitment
and they acted their socks off! Well done."
Michael Hart, who works in child and adolescent mental health services, and is one of the
judges, said: "Wow! The performances were outstanding - accurate, capturing real-life
experiences. It was very moving and these are very talented young people. The hard bit
is choosing a finalist!"
Drama teacher Katie Amroon said: "We have benefited immensely from the opportunity
kindly offered to us from the North Essex Partnership.
"Whilst working on this project on mental health it has opened our students' eyes and
encouraged research and frank, honest discussion on a topic that is not always easy for
young people to empathise with.

01/08/2012

Everything Epping Forest Page 22 of 27

"The performances were so inspiring that our students have not stopped talking about it,
and are excitedly awaiting the results!
"We would like to thank the panel so much for their time and constructive comments."

Student knocked unconscious

8.10am - 6th June 2012

POLICE are appealing for information following a robbery in Loughton in which a drama
student was knocked unconscious while out rehearsing his lines.
The attack happened when a 23-year-old local man was walking along The Drive shortly
after 10.15pm on Thursday, May 17.
He was struck on the back of the head and punched and kicked in the face while on the
floor. It is thought that man's pockets were then rifled through, but he had nothing on him.
Investigating officer PC Simone Wade said: "The poor man doesn't recall how he got
home and was actually put to bed by a housemate who thought he was drunk.
"When he awoke the following morning, he knew he had been assaulted and was taken
by his friends to hospital. They also then contacted us.
"We're asking people to cast their minds back and recall if they remember seeing this
man."
The man had walked up and down the nearby High Road and nearby roads surrounding
Morrisons while learning his lines for a play.
Anyone with any information should ring investigating officers at Ongar Police Station on
101.

Intruders foiled by man on computer in Turkey

7.54am - 6th June 2012

A MAN has managed to foil intruders in his Loughton home while being thousands of
miles away on his computer in Turkey.
Entry to the house in Lawton Road was gained when a window was smashed between
4pm and 5.30pm on Friday, March 30.
Minutes earlier the homeowners, a husband and wife, had been having a conversation on
MSN using a webcam.
The man was in his native Turkey at the time. The woman left the house briefly to see her
son who was outside but left the internet connection on.
A few minutes later he saw one of the two young men standing in his hallway.
As he did, he shouted: "Get out of my house. I am calling the police."
This forced the pair to flee, empty-handed.
Investigating Officer Detective Constable Mandi Coltman said: "This woman's husband
had been waiting for his wife to return but instead saw two strangers in his home.
"It was down to his actions, shouting at the men and then ringing us here in Essex that
led to the thief running off.
"We have carried out house-to-house enquiries and discovered that youngsters on
scrambler bikes do hang out in the area."
Officers arrived just as the woman returned to her property. It was then discovered that
the man had ransacked the upstairs section, but had stolen nothing.
The man had been in Turkey for a family funeral but has since returned to his UK home.
Anyone with information should ring detectives at Harlow Police Station on 101 or
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Tea group seeks guests and volunteers

7.52am - 6th June 2012

VOLUNTEER drivers, hosts - and guests - are wanted for a new Contact the Elderly
group for the Loughton, Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill area.
Localised Contact the Elderly groups across the country aim to provide a unique lifeline of
friendship, hope and laughter, as well as building local communities, by organising
monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people (aged 75+) who
live alone.
The groups are run by volunteer co-ordinators, drivers and hosts within the local
community, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month.
Stef Brown, volunteer co-ordinator and driver for the west Essex group, said: "Each older
person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host's
home for the afternoon.
"The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain
the same which means that over the months and years acquaintances turn into friends
and loneliness is replaced by companionship."
Some elderly guests and volunteers were invited to 10 Downing Street on Saturday for
the Prime Minister's Queen's Diamond Jubilee Big Lunch.
The tea parties are a real lifeline of friendship for the older guests who have little or no

01/08/2012

Everything Epping Forest Page 23 of 27

contact with any family or friends.
Stef added: "They bring people of all ages together, develop fulfilling friendships and
support networks, and give everyone involved something to look forward to each month.
"These monthly outings are the highlight of the month for many of our older guests and
for some it is the only time they leave their house for a social occasion."
The west Essex group's first tea party on June 10 with the local group joining with two
others at the Prince Regent Hotel in Chigwell thanks to the generous support of JP
Morgan, one of the charity's corporate donors.
A big tea party is also being planned at a farm in Saffron Walden this summer and the
west Essex group will be undertaking fundraising activities for extra special tea parties, for
example at Christmas.
Stef said: "I joined as a volunteer because I'm an ex-pat Canadian who has been living in
the UK for 20 years.
"I have no family here and realised that because of this I have little to no contact with
elderly people from whom I believe I have much to learn and admire, plus I want to give
back to society in some way and can't think of a better way to do so than to help this
vulnerable and oft-forgotten group of people."
The guests need to be aged over 75, living alone and mobile enough to get into the cars.
The homes of volunteer hosts need to have ground-floor access with a ground floor toilet.
Anyone interested in joining the group, either as an elderly guest or volunteer, should
contact Katy Szita, East London Development Officer with Contact the Elderly, on 020
8530 0494 or email katy.szita@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

JUBILEE: Ox roast marathon underway

8.49pm - 3rd June 2012

VILLAGERS in Moreton who are aiming to set a new record for the world's biggest ox
roast are working through the night to turn the ox on a giant scaffolding tower erected in
the village.
They expect it will take 22 hours to cook the ox which weighs in at a massive 356kgs.
Local councillor Tony Boyce, one of the organisers, said: "The effort that has gone into
this has been phenomenal. We think it could serve 2,000 people."
The team behind what has turned out to be a world record attempt has erected a
scaffolding tower, dug a pit for the fire and included a butcher's table as part of the
structure so the carcass can be pulled along on pulleys to the front of the tower for the
butcher to carve tomorrow evening.
Organisers expect that it will need some two tonnes of wood for the fire.
Mr Boyce said: "The idea started in the pub. Someone said we should do a hog roast and
then someone said that at the silver jubilee in 1977 the village had an ox roast. This is is
the biggest ox!
"We are going for the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest ox roast in the world."
Tickets for the medieval ox roast are still on sale, priced £5, from the village's two pubs
and will be available on-site - in the field behind the White Hart pub - from tomorrow
morning.

supply for blue dye.
He entered the house, without showing any identification, and told the woman - who is in
her 80s - to turn on the taps.
After several minutes the woman became concerned and went back to the front door,
which was still open, and saw another man in her front garden.
She went upstairs and found a large amount of jewellery had been stolen.
As she came downstairs to call the police, she saw the two men walking off and away
from her home.
Investigating Officer Detective Constable Mandi Coltman said: "The man who knocked on
the door stated the dye could be dangerous to the woman's health, citing this as the
reason for having to inspect the taps.
"Again, we would urge and remind all homeowners to refuse entry to any stranger turning
up on their doorstep without appointment and to obtain valid identification from those who
do so, purporting to be from a utility or sales company.
"If these people are who they say they are, then they will only be too happy and patient
while you verify the details with their head office.
"We really want to catch these two men and recover the woman's rings as they are of
immense sentimental value to her, having been bought for her by her late husband."
The two burglars were white.
The man who was in the house is described as being a fast-talker with an Irish accent, of
medium build, aged in his early 40s, about 5ft 8ins tall, with a clean, fresh complexion and
wearing a white polo shirt, white flat cap and blue jeans.
The other man was wearing a dark shirt and dark trousers.
Officers attended the house a short time after the burglary to obtain a statement from the
woman. As they were doing so, they had to call the ambulance service as the victim
started to suffer chest pains.
The woman was taken to hospital where she was kept in overnight for observations.
It is thought the illness was brought on by the stress of the burglary.
Anyone with information in connection with the burglary should contact detectives at
Harlow Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Students take part in rice challenge

4.18pm - 1st June 2012

STUDENTS at West Hatch High School have been buying rice and having rice - and
nothing else - for lunch to help raise money for charity.
The students could promote rice to family and friends by selling it by the bag or take part
in the West Hatch challenge of raising a minimum of £5 to take part in a non-uniform day
when they were only allowed to eat the Fair Trade rice at school.
The sponsorship money raised entitled them to a juice drink and water during breaks and
they took home a 1kg bag of rice for every £5 raised.
Sara Gabriel, the school's careers and enterprise co-ordinator, said: "West Hatch usually
holds some sort of fundraising enterprise event during Fair Trade fortnight to raise
awareness of Fair Trade to the students.
"This year, with the help of students, we did something slightly different after I saw an
email from Just Trading Scotland.
Sara said: "The email caught my attention because not only did it cover the FairTrade
angle but was also about schooling, so was pertinent to every student in the school."
The challenge was to sell 90kg of rice, which is the amount of rice a Malawian farmer has
to sell at a fair price to enable him to afford to send one of his children to high school for a
year.
The school held assemblies to raise awareness of the Fairtrade message, which is a
vision of a world in which justice and sustainable development are at the heart of trade
structures and practices.
This enables everyone, through their work, to maintain a decent and dignified livelihood
and develop their full potential, by connecting disadvantaged producers and consumers,
promoting fairer trading conditions and empowering producers to combat poverty,
strengthen their position in world markets and take more control over their lives.
Sara said: "I am totally amazed at the amount of money raised from just 86 students. With
sponsorship pledged we will have raised over £1,000 so will be able to send four farmers'
children to school for the year.
"It is so commendable of all those that took part because it's not easy to only eat rice all
day and I am really proud of them all.
"The students will have an amazing experience to put in their CVs with regards to
fundraising and volunteering, also enabling them to achieve a V10 award from V-inspired
and certainly the school will be rewarding their commitment too.
"I am planning to run this event annually as the reward is multi-dimensional for those that
need it as well as those who take part."
