DARKENU PARSHAT NOACH
“ How people affect people!”
Noach was instructed to build the Teiva in order to survive the flood. It was a job that would take 120 years – the Biblical lifespan. Not that Hashem couldn’t save Noach and his family without this. The commentators explain that the ark building exercise was not just to create the means to survive the flood, but rather, it was an educational imperative. Hashem wished Noach to be seen to be preparing for a flood, to inform and perhaps to inspire others to Teshuva.
Education is not just about preaching and teaching – it is about doing, and doing visibly. It is about having the courage to provoke questions and waiting for those questions rather than pre-empting them.
Apparently Noach’s educational message failed. It seems that not even one person joined his effort.
Rabbi Kaminetzky explains that Noach himself (at some level) was not really expecting the deluge. He knew it was coming, but it wasn’t real. Perhaps that is why he couldn’t convince anyone else.
Above all, the way to another person’s heart is through your own heart. We need to ‘be there’ – to really feel, not just to understand – our message.
Ultimately people don’t respond to messages – they respond largely to people. When we are real, it is catchy.
Wishing you a good Shabbos.

7 December 2018 Term 4 Ends

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to a packed and exciting Fourth Term. We have a lot planned for the last term of the year, as we simultaneously begin plans for a fantastic 2019 school year.
It has been wonderful welcoming everyone back, across the schools. I, along with Mr. Long, have particularly enjoyed spending more time in the Girls’ High School this term. We have made it a focus for the coming weeks to work on developing the ethos and culture around davening, with an appreciation for the opportunity that this gives us to develop our relationship with Hashem and our identity as a collective and a community. We are encouraged by how enthusiastically the girls have taken to this and look forward to wonderful growth in this regard.
We have begun strategic discussions with our Girls High School Limudei Kodesh team on the issue of davening - which is a worldwide challenge within Jewish teenage education.
We began this initiative by addressing the girls on Tuesday morning on the power of Tefillah - giving them their own space to share how they would like to see Tefilla improve, as well as taking to time to write personal prayers - set to make their way in a box to the Kotel.
Following that, the High Schools combined in the Mizrachi Shul on Wednesday morning for a dynamic Musical Hallel. It was full of life, energy, simcha and vibe - as we called out to Hashem together in passionate and meaningful Tefilla. Look out for pics and videos to come.
I joined the girls after davening this morning and shared with them an insight on Noach’s powerful leadership ability in being able to be ‘two-faced’ in ‘dorotav’ - ‘his generations’. To the generation of the flood, he needed to be a righteous ‘Tzaddik’ and to the generation of the Tower of Bavel, he needed to be a pure believer as ‘Tamim’. He was able to engage in different aspects of his personality, depending on what the leadership challenge was. This is the positive channeling of our ability to be ‘two-faced’. However, in our modern day lives, social media empowers us to so easily be destructively ‘two-faced’ in our relationships - especially at this age. I read an article this week that portrayed how severely destructive social media can be in this respect - See: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/10/teens-face-relentless-bullying-instagram/572164/
Just as Hashem gave Noach the ability to have varied emotions and strengths, so too we all have this powerful gift. And as with all character traits, it can be harnessed for the good and for the bad. In our modern world, we can be very ‘brave’ in saying things online that we would never say ‘offline’ face to face - and that is what we have to be careful of. I shared with the girls the tool of asking that question before posting anything online - “Would I say this same thing to the person or about the person if she was standing in front of me or in the same room as me.” That question can ground us in staying true to our true character and value and prevent creating discord and hurt in our relationships.

We had some amazing highlights this week with DJ Raphi joining us - and rocking our Grades 2-8 learners with his awesome music and even more spectacular story of how he followed a different path in life to find his way and his ‘voice’.

We then had a very moving and powerful tribute to Prince Buthelezi on Monday evening - giving respect and gratitude to an outspoken friend of the South African Jewish Community and the State of Israel. Our BHS learners shone in their performance of a Zulu medley - culminating with Lechaim. A great highlight was our Junior PS learners singing happy birthday to the Prince and handing him his gift, along with the Rosh Yeshiva.
P”G may we have a continued jam-packed, educational and transformative last term of the year!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Leron Bernstein

Dear Parents,
As per our communication last term, we are very excited to be hosting a crucial educational evening for our staff and parents as a key component of our approach in addressing the challenges emerging from technology and social media engagement.
We have been working closely with Dr Lizzie Harrison, a renowned neuroscientist and expert on social media, technology and the impacts thereof on our children’s learning processes and general development. Lizzie is a well-known expert on the subject and has written and lectured widely on it. She forms a core part of the team that runs an organisation known as SafeSchool.
The Principals and Counsellors are working with Lizzie, where she is consulting on and updating our school-wide policies on social media and technology usage, as well as refining the relevant relationships and advisories with our parents and learners. A core part of this
programme will be Lizzie delivering educational talks to our learners and parents on this subject.
Please see the flyer for details of our event on Tuesday the 23rd of October that begins at 19h00 in the Main Shul Hall. The school expects that all parents attend this critical talk. Please treat this as a mandatory event and make every effort to attend. There will be designated packs for the parents of each learner - which will be distributed to the parents on their arrival and registration for the evening. The talk for the parents is being coordinated with the talks that Lizzie will deliver for our management, teachers and learners in the days leading up to the general parent talk.
We are also putting together a Social Media Education Expo, inviting various individuals and institutions to present relevant products, books and information packs that will be made available for you on the evening.
We look forward to partnering with you in this crucial educational endeavour - as we seek to further educate, protect and nurture our children with the best skills and resources available.
Warm Regards,
Rabbi Bernstein Rob Long Joseph Beer Ruth Kirkel

Dear Parents
The new term got off to the most exciting start with the arrival of incubators and eggs. Over the course of a few days, we were all glued to the incubators, watching and waiting for the first chick to peck its way out its shell. Emerging into the world was no mean feat and there was so much delight as fluffy gold or black chicks made their appearance. Learning about the hatching process and the chickens themselves, together with being able to hold these little creatures, completed an amazing few days.
With Bereishit as our first “theme” of the term, creation certainly came alive for our children. As learning about Bereishit continues, our children are learning so much about the world around them.
Parshat Noach was also a source of great excitement as the ship in the Nursery School and a jungle gym in the older Playschool were transformed into taivas. Dough in the various colours of the rainbow was moulded into a rainbow, baked and eaten with much relish!
A wonderful start to our new term! SHABBAT SHALOM

Dear Parents,
A very ‘hot’ welcome back to Term 4! I trust that you all enjoyed a meaningful Sukkot and that you had a very well deserved holiday!
The children have settled down beautifully and are well into the swing of things.
We kicked off the term with a blast on Monday. The Grade 2 – 8 children were entertained by DJ Rafi Nathan from Israel – a past pupil of Yeshiva College many years ago. The children had lots of fun and their enthusiasm was visible all over their faces!
On Wednesday we held our Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan Assembly. It was so exciting to see the Grade 1s davening Hallel out of their Siddurim. Rabbi Katz was his usual exciting self, however, it is always more exciting to hear feedback from your children directly.
E X C IT I N G N E W S
Mishnah, Milk & Mezanot will be starting again for Grade 3 to Grade 6 children. This will be run by Aharon Chemel.
Monday Boys from 07h00 – 07h30 Wednesday Girls from 07h00 – 07h30.

On Thursday Grades 3P and 3S went to Yad Aharon to assist with the packing of lunch boxes for Ohr Natanel. This was the conclusion of the Elul Chesed project.

Please see note from Yad Aharon as well as photos.
“Thanks so much for organizing the collection of tuna and peanut butter and for bringing the kids to pack today. They did a great job. It’s an important educational experience for them. One little boy said “these poor people are going to be so happy “.

WEEKLY SECURITY TIP - APPROACHING YOUR DRIVEWAY
When arriving home by car, don’t just absent-mindedly drive in, follow the following procedure:
1. Check your rear view mirrors to make sure you are not being followed.
2. Check ahead that no one is waiting at your gates.
3. Do not enter your driveway if either of the above is true.
4. Stop parallel to your entrance and open the gate. When the gate is fully opened, drive in and immediately close the gate.
5. In this way you have an opportunity to drive away if hijackers appear and not to be trapped in your driveway. You will also demonstrate your vigilance and be less likely to fall prey to an attack.
STAY ALERT
If you are unable to do your Security Duty please swap with another parent. It is not sufficient to request a swap on your class group as people tend to ignore the request, rather phone other parents to ask them to swap with you. If for some reason you have been unable to

swap please notify me.

This morning I began sharing with the boys’ school my wish that all at Yeshiva College be proud of our school. i.e. Staff, students and parents. I will continue my discussions with the girls’ school next week.

This morning I began sharing with the boys’ school my wish that all at Yeshiva College be proud of our school. i.e. Staff, students and parents. I will continue my discussions with the girls’ school next week.
Our discussion will encompass the questions:
 What is the meaning of school pride? i.e. What are we proud of, is it the values and ethos of our school, the building, people in our school or is it the secular and kodesh teaching.
 How do we show school pride? i.e. Is it the way in which we talk about our school, is it what we look like, is it how we behave both in and outside of school. I reiterate, pride is not arrogance or being boastful. It is about knowing who we are and what we stand for.
Warm regards
Rob Long

Dear Parents,
Welcome back everyone to the fourth term!
It has been great to welcome everyone back to the final term of the year, an intense term with General Studies exams just around the corner.
In the LK department we are continuing learning and growing towards the end of the year. We have some great programmes and topics planned for TFL and some incredibly exciting and dynamic YID programmes.
The excitement is in the air as our Grade 10 talmidim prepare to embark on the Kfar Programme which leave in 4 weeks’ time.
Our term has certainly started with an incredible vibe. On Monday our Grade 7s and 8s were privileged to watch a spectacular performance by YC Alumnus, DJ Raphi. Raphi Nathan is a world renowned DJ from Israel who taught our learners about finding one's unique path to greatness throughout his performance. Thank you to all the sponsors who made this experience possible!
Our learners were true ambassadors to our school at the beautiful and stirring tribute to Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi on his 90th Birthday which we hosted in the Yeshiva College main shul. Our YaChad BHS Choir performed a wonderful medley for the prince! Kol hakavod and thank you to all those who came to this important communal event.
On Wednesday we had our first combined High Schools Rosh Chodesh Davening and Musical Hallel which was an inspiring way to start the month of Mar Cheshvan.
Enjoy the pictures! Shabbat Shalom
Rabbi Daniel Kaplan

Term 4 and we are back and pumping!
Yeshiva College Girls High School is already in the hustle and bustle. The girls were so excited to come back to school and see all their friends and their teachers. Tuesday was Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. We had a beautiful Hallel davening with singing and dancing as we welcomed the new month.
Mr Long spoke to the girls about the importance of davening, having the opportunity to start off the day by connecting to our spirituality and gaining consciousness by connecting to our mind, body and soul.
Following which, Rav Leron Bernstein ran a programme about how our davening is both individualistic and communal. He then made a suggestion box for the girls to give ways in which they think they can improve davening at the school.
On Wednesday, the girls and boys had a joyous musical davening together in the Mizrachi shul. Once again the grade 11s lead the school with their enthusiasm and excitement. We have already seen the impact that these two programmes have had on our girls.
On Thursday the grade 11 girls left for Hitkashrut where they will explore dynamic topics and go on a journey of self- discovery.
The YID room has been filled with girls every break with music through the school halls and smiling faces.
We are so happy to be together again! Shabbat Shalom,
Yardena Bauer and the YID Team
