INTRODUCTION

Dato’ Onn bin Jaafar, was born on 1895 in Johor Bahru, Malaya who died January 19, 1962, Johor Bahru,
Malayan was a political figure who played a leading role in the Merdeka (independence) movement and the
establishment of the Federation of Malaya, forerunner of the present country of Malaysia.

EDUCATION

• He started his education in a Malay school in Johor Bahru. In 1904, he went to England to attend
Aldeburgh Lodge School, a private school in Suffolk, with the then Tengku Mahkota until 1909. He
excelled in sports and captained the school’s cricket and football teams.[

• He returned to Malaya and was enrolled at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) where he
studied there for two years from 1910 to 1911. According to biographer Ramlah Adam, one of the main
reasons for him to enroll at MCKK was the need to improve his Malay language proficiency that had
weakened considerably following his time in England.

POLITICAL CAREER

• Early Malay nationalism took root in Johor during the 1920s, he became a journalist and wrote articles on
the welfare of the Malays

• He went into exile in Singapore and became the editor of a Malay paper, Warta Malaya, in 1930. Over the
next six years, he edited four other newspapers including Lembaga Malaya, Warta Ahad and Lembaga.
Onn became very popular after he continued to cover issues on Malay grievances, and Sultan
Ibrahim invited Onn to return to Johor in 1936.

POLITICAL CAREER

• Following the Japanese occupation of Malaya in 1941, Onn was drafted into the administrative system and
served as a food controller in Johor.

• Along with his companions, Haji Anwar bin Abdul Malik, Haji Syed Alwi bin Syed Sheikh al-Hadi
and Mohamed Noah Omar, they founded the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) as a means to
rally the Malays against the Malayan Union, which was perceived as threatening Malay privileges and the
position of the Malay rulers. Onn took up the role of UMNO's president on 1 May 1946.

CONTRIBUTIONS

• The former Menteri Besar of Johor, is the founder and first Yang DiPertua of UMNO, the main
leader of the movement to oppose and defeat the Malayan Union and a reporting figure and catalyst
for unity and cooperation between the races in Malaysia.

• The first contribution Dato 'Onn bin Jaafar in the political aspect and indirectly opened the eyes of
the community about the importance of unity for the independence of Malaya in 1946. The first
step is establishing his executed by the Malay party United Malays National Organization (UMNO)
at 11 May 1946 and he was also appointed the first UMNO president.

CONTRIBUTIONS

• On October 1, 1946, Dato 'Onn was appointed Minister of Johor.Three years later, he resigned to
devote his time to UMNO.

• Under his leadership, UMNO succeeded in forcing the British government to dissolve the Malayan
Union and replaced by the Federation of Malaya Melayu.Persekutuan 1948 maintain the position of
the Malay Rulers and the tightening of the conditions of citizenship, as well as giving special rights
Melayu.Dato 'Onn was frustrated by what he perceives as racist policies of UMNO, and suggest that
party membership is open to all residents of Malaya.

CONCLUSION

• Dato’ Onn’s task was no easier and neither was he one to shy away from tough, bold positions. His was the
principal voice of Independence when few else believed it was desirable, much less necessary.

• But Dato’ Onn proved to be a man of immense courage, vision and charisma to rally a united front, persuading the
large masses to demand self-rule and self-determination for a country that had been under the colonial thumb for
more than 400 years.

• And while Dato’ Onn could not lead the final charge all the way to London, it was his leadership and commitment
to progressive change when it would have been easier to chime with the chorus, that kick started the march to
inevitable Independence.
