By looking into the past, we can travel back to the ‘60s, when the
first strawberry plants were cultivated in low altimeter areas in
Greece, like Naousa and Veria in the North. Eventually, the cul-
tivation expanded further south and it was 20 years later, dur-
ing the ‘80s, when it was then introduced in Nea Manolada, in the
Peloponnese, that since that time has become the main produc-
tion area of strawberries in Greece. About 95% of the total pro-
duction of Greek strawberries is located in that area, while the
cultivation is practiced in low cost greenhouses.
The establishment of the cultivation in the fertile ground of this
particular region cannot be considered random by any chance. A
variety of factors, like humidity levels, sunshine most of the year
and mild winters without extreme temperatures, compose the
ideal microclimate for the optimal growth of strawberries. There-
