Boston University Medical Group

Clinical Excellence Awards
October 18, 2017

Welcome Message

Welcome to the inaugural Clinical Excellence Awards Ceremony for
the Boston University Medical Group. These awards were created to
recognize and highlight the clinical contributions of BUMG faculty
who exemplify the mission and values of the group through their
leadership, patient care, and innovative perspectives.

On behalf of the Boston University Medical Group and the Clinical
Excellence Awards Selection Committee, we would like to thank each
of you for your involvement. It is because of your nominations, tireless
efforts, and commitment to excellence, that we are able to bring this
event to fruition.

We are honored to work with such committed and dedicated colleagues
and staff. With this celebration we hope to highlight and recognize not
only the award recipients and society inductees, but to also celebrate
the entire medical campus.

New Faculty Excellence Award

Given to a new clinician who demonstrates clinical excellence and has made
exceptional contributions to the clinical mission of the organization during his/her first

three years of service.

Shannon Lee Bell, MD
Assistant Professor
Obstetrics and Gynecology

Shannon Bell is a board-certified general
obstetrician-gynecologist at Boston Medical
Center. She graduated from the University of
California, San Francisco School of Medicine in 2011, and Gynecology
residency at Boston Medical Center in 2015.
Dr. Bell's interests include the role of simulation in quality
improvement/patient safety projects and resident skill development. She
is an Associate Clinical Director of the Solomont Center for Clinical
Simulation on BMC’s campus. Also, she is an active member of the
national Simulations Working Group under ACOG (American Congress
of Obstetricians and Gynecologists).
Clinically, she also serves as the consultant OB-GYN for the state
Department of Corrections, seeing prenatal and gynecology patients at
MCI-Framingham and South Middlesex, the two state correctional
facilities which house women. She created and serves as course director
for a correctional health elective for fourth year medical students at
Boston University School of Medicine.

Excellence in Care Award

Given to an early or mid-career clinician who demonstrates clinical excellence and is
an exceptional role model for the values in his/her clinical work.

James Hudspeth, MD, FACP
Assistant Professor
General Internal Medicine

James Hudspeth received his MD at Washington
University in St. Louis and did residency at the
Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
He has been at BMC for 6 years working as a hospitalist and as an
educator. His academic interests focus on education, especially around
faculty development in low income countries and in Boston; global
health, particularly in developing the careers of US trainees; and hospital
medicine, as he functions as Associate Director for the Hospital
Medicine Unit and Medical Director for the Inpatient General Medicine
Teaching Service. The elements that brought him to BMC are the same
ones that have happily kept him here - working with an underserved
population and a sense of mission - as well as the tremendous group of
coworkers who share those values throughout the hospital (including his
wife, Sarah Kimball, who is one of the PCPs). He especially thanks the
nurses, pharmacists, PT/OT and doctors of the general medicine service
(MP 6E and 6W) for their camaraderie over the last 6 years, and for their
persistence in going above and beyond for our patients.

Excellence in Care Award

Given to an early or mid-career clinician who demonstrates clinical excellence and
is an exceptional role model for the values in his/her clinical work.

Genevieve Preer, MD
Assistant Professor
Pediatrics

Genevieve Preer is originally from Washington,
D. C. and attended college at Yale University.
After graduation, she spent 5 years in community
health as an outreach worker and medical assistant. She attended
medical school at the University of California, San Francisco and
completed her residency in the Boston Combined Residency Program in
Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center and Boston Children's Hospital.
Upon her graduation in 2009, Dr. Preer joined the Department of
Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center. She sees patients in the Pediatric
Primary Care Clinic and provides consultation as a member of the
hospital's Child Protection Team. Dr. Preer is an Assistant Professor of
Pediatrics in the Boston University School of Medicine. She has worked
as a liaison with the Medical-Legal Partnership | Boston in its
partnership with BMC Pediatrics on an ongoing basis. Her interests
include health advocacy, child abuse prevention, and social justice.
Proud parent of a 9th and an 11th grader, she is most often found outside
of work either driving to or on the sidelines of a youth athletic event.

Excellence in Leadership Award

Given to a clinician who demonstrates exceptional clinical leadership, embodies the
BUMG core values, and has made noteworthy contributions to enhancing clinical

infrastructure and/or supporting excellence in patient care.

Sarah Crane, MD, FACOG
Clinical Assistant Professor
Obstetrics & Gynecology

Sarah Crane received her MD from the
University of Missouri-Kansas City and
completed her residency in Obstetrics &
Gynecology at Boston City Hospital. Subsequently she performed a one
year fellowship in Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology at Tufts Medical
Center. She joined Boston Medical Center as an attending physician in
2014 and provided gynecologic care in the Pediatrics Adolescent clinic
for the next 6 years in addition to her generalist duties. After working
and teaching at Cambridge Health Alliance for 13 years, she returned to
BMC as medical director of outpatient OB/GYN in January 2013.
Current research interests and activities involve peri-partum depression
and HPV vaccination completion in the adult patient.

Excellence in Leadership Award

Given to a clinician who demonstrates exceptional clinical leadership, embodies the
BUMG core values, and has made noteworthy contributions to enhancing clinical

infrastructure and/or supporting excellence in patient care.

Jack Maypole, MD
Clinical Associate Professor
Pediatrics

Born and raised in New Jersey, Jack Maypole
graduated from Yale University as a History
major bound for what he thought was a career
teaching high school. Three years, several jobs and pre-med classes later,
he returned to New Haven to attend med school, with a refocused aim to
care for children as a pediatrician. He is very glad that he did. Dr.
Maypole trained in the first class of the Boston Combined Residency in
Pediatrics at the very time Boston City Hospital became Boston Medical
Center. Early on, he was drawn to programs involving multi-disciplinary
teams caring for complex patients, joining the Comprehensive Care
Program as a team member under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Parker,
with whom he worked for many years. While he has always maintained
his presence in that complex care clinic, he has also worked in a grant
funded Integrative Medicine Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, and
later served as the Chief of Pediatrics at the South End Community Health
Center from 2007-2013, when he came to BMC Pediatrics and Boston
University full time. He enjoys his work as a complex care and primary
care clinician, program innovator, educator, and advocate for the care of
children and youth with special needs. Dr. Maypole also writes for
academic and mainstream publications on issues of child health. He is
inspired by his wife and three children, and values deeply the role of
humor and joy in life and medicine, which he tries to capture in his
freelance cartooning.
