Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to our October newsletter. A Reminder of Our Top
Priorities 2018
I hope that your own families have had a smooth transition back into the new Academic term, and that our children have found
the return to education after the Summer not too problematic. Our Executive Management Team were thrilled to see really All Services Good/Outstanding Rated
impressive GCSE and A-Level results for a number of our young people over the summer, as well as annual attendance and
attainment information for the academic year showing attendance at over 90%, and achievement of qualifications at the highest
levels they have ever been. Congratulation to our education colleagues for supporting the young people in this achievement, as
well as our Education Director Tariq.

In terms of opportunities for our young people, I was also delighted to be able to sign off a Mechanics Apprenticeship role for one Digitise Clinical Programme
of our young men from Stalmine Lodge, Dane. Dane will be a Care 4 Children employee, completing an apprenticeship and a Open 4 New Homes
number of other qualifications with us. He will be remaining at Stalmine Lodge for the duration of the course, and I am convinced
that he will be a fantastic example for other children that we support as to what they can achieve, as well as acting as a mentor to Deliver Employee Engagement Strategy
them. Dane embodies what can be possible with the right support from care, education and clinical when they work together and
my thanks and congratulations to the teams who have supported him to this point. We wish him the best of luck with his
qualification, as well as a big welcome as a C4C apprentice employee.

Dane’s success is in no small part down to the dedication and commitment of the Stalmine Lodge Home Manager, Jane Wright. I IT Infrastructure Improvements
was sad to say goodbye to Jane in September, as she has had to move on from Care 4 Children due to personal circumstances
meaning that she could no longer commit to the home as she had been doing. I wish Jane all the best, thank her for all of her hard Maintain Our Investors in People
work and commitment to the children and hope that at some point in the future she may make her way back to us in some Accreditation
capacity.

In other news, my Executive Management Team and I have given a lot of thought in recent months to our management structure. Development
As a result, we will be re-organising the way our operating divisions are structured in the coming months, and I have provided
more information on this on page 3. Implement Social Responsibility

Our Executive Management Team were also pleased to welcome the first cohort of students on the Child Systemic Focused
Practice Course (CSPC) during early October. I was thrilled that we were able to launch this course, as when I founded Care 4 If you have a feedback on the

with their wider teams, and I am also hopeful that it will allow ambitious individuals within our organisation to forge valuable links Team at
across service lines, so that they can start forming the Executive Management Team of the future. [email protected]

On a final note, as ever, thank you all for your hard work and dedication – I am grateful to you all for your continued support and
the difference that you make in the lives of children.

Why make a change?

We have been wanting to ensure that support for managers and
their teams remains strong and is not diluted, and also preserve
and improve quality across our services. We have also wanted to
ensure that we balance the need to ensure accountability and
closeness between Executive Management Team members and
front line service staff by ensuring we do not have too many layers
in our organisation.

What are the differences?

We will be moving our harmful sexual behaviour services out of
our Sexual Trauma division, and joining them with our Gang and
Radicalisation services to form a new Forensic Co-Located Hub.
Our remaining forensic homes, which operate the hub and spoke
model for education at Trax Academy, will form the second service
hub.

Where will the current leadership team move to?

We will be removing the post of Assistant Head of Service and reverting to a Head of Service role for each division. We thank Ali Sarwar and Amy Moulton,
who have been outstanding in their respective Assistant Head of Service roles.

We have appointed Beth Davies to lead our Sexual Trauma Hub, which will now consist of our Child Sexual Exploitation and Complex Trauma services.

Ali Sarwar has been appointed as Head of Service for the Forensic Co-Located Hub, and congratulations to him on this new role. Dominic Tumelty will
continue in his Head of Service Role for the Forensic Home Hub. All three hubs will have a Clinical Lead Psychologist allocated to that hub, who will supervise
the additional clinical staff within their respective hubs.

We were keen to be able to retain Amy Moulton (currently Assistant Head of Service for Forensic) given the depth of her knowledge, experience and
capability and the benefits that she brings to the services she works with. We are pleased to announce that Amy will move into a newly created Quality
Assurance role. Reporting directly to Kamran, Amy will take on responsibility for a number of Regulation 44 visits, re-igniting our Quality Assurance Group and
Young People Participation Group as well as providing project related support.

Chief Inspector sets out vision for new Education Inspection Framework

Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector, Amanda Spielman recently announced details of planned changes to the way Ofsted inspects
schools, colleges, further education institutions and early years settings from September 2019. These changes will move Ofsted’s
focus away from headline data to look instead at how schools are achieving these results, and whether they are offering a
curriculum that is broad, rich and deep, or simply teaching to test.
Speaking to school leaders at the annual SCHOOLS North East summit in Newcastle, Ms Spielman said that these changes will be
designed to allow teachers and leaders to focus more of their time on the real substance of education.

Summary:
Amanda Spielman proposes 4 new inspection judgements
- Schools will no longer receive a separate grade for outcomes

for pupils
- Focus will be on the substance of education and a broad

curriculum
- More involvement for classroom teachers
- Consultation on draft framework to be launched in January

It has been a busy time for staff within sexual trauma with amazing work taking place with our children.

Hello from all of us in the Forensics teams…

Another busy period in the Forensics world to report on must start with a thank you to everyone for all

been faced but met with determination and clear focus on improving the outcomes for them.

It was with much sadness that we said farewell to Jane Wright who, due to family commitments, has had Join our Team

in Head Office but throughout it is very clear that Jane is welcome back any time and if her circumstances We’re always on the hunt

Welcome to the team…
We have appointed two new Assistant Psychologists – Abbie Newby and Emma Guest will be joining the Education team at Columbus
House and Teresa House retrospectively. Welcome to the team and we look forward to getting to know you in the coming weeks.

News…
The Child Focused Systemic Practise Course took off recently, with Home Managers, Senior Management, Lead Teachers, Fostering and
Clinical staff taking part. It will revolutionise and standardise our thinking in this area across the board, working together over a year
focusing on Looked After Children and all the complex contexts that impact on their lives. We look forward to including more about the
course as it progresses over the coming months.

The Clinical Tracker and Manual is taking shape and going live shortly! Congratulations and thank you to the team for the immense
amount of time and effort you have undertaken in making this happen. The effects across the clinical division should be palpable.

Top priorities during 2018

• Digitise our Wellbeing for Life Programme™

• Develop and implement a bespoke Clinical Tracker, producing an e-book Wellbeing for Life and Exceptional Experiences Manual(s) 10
and adapt our workbooks for a digital platform.

As you read this we are preparing for or even already enjoying the half term break. The Autumn Term is 11
usually a long one and an unsettled one, linked to new cohorts of students, restarting the engagement in
education and getting rid of the August cob webs and this year’s was no exception.

I’d like to thank each and every one of you on a personal note for the unwavering commitment to our
young people in times where it can be extremely challenging to keep the faith and remain positive. We
have now received all exam results, which show a 30% increase in both exams taken and outcomes
achieved, which is an awesome achievement for all involved. Our Trax Academy colleagues are preparing
an Open Day in November and getting a haircut and a wax at the same time, as we are preparing a
promotional video about Trax Academy under the artistic guidance of Luqman Shah. This will no doubt
show many hidden dormant cinematic talents and it is rumoured that the video might actually be entered
for an Oscar 2019 Award. It is a really an exciting project.

Since the last newsletter we have had an extremely successful Ofsted inspection at Rosa House School,
Briercliffe. The outcome promises to be absolutely amazing and a big compliment goes out to the Lead
Teacher, Vivien, and her team and all involved in Rosa House, not in the least the three pupils, who
presented them in an amazing fashion, that really made me proud. The month of December is around the
corner and with it come several charity events which the Education Department will inform you of. I am
sure that as usual all will contribute fully and spread happiness all around.

Social Responsibility Charter

You may remember from the last edition of the Newsletter when we asked you to vote for your
favourite C4C Corporate Responsibility Logo. With three strong logos to choose from we knew it
was going to be a close one, but we’re excited to announce the people have spoken! Without
further ado we can reveal the new Care 4 Children Corporate Responsibility Logo…

Congratulations to everyone involved, we know a lot of time and effort was put into this innovation 12
and we would like to echo a huge thank you and congratulations to all those involved! The logo will
now go forth to be tweaked and developed by our marketing team ready to be distributed
internally and externally.

The Retreat… Outstanding

We are pleased to announce that The Retreat has retained its Outstanding Ofsted rating.
Hannah, the Home Manager had this to say:

“I was on annual leave and received the phone call from my Deputy Manager that Ofsted
had arrived at The Retreat for a full two-day inspection. I was travelling in my car as I was
going away for a few days, and all I could think of was where is the next turning or round
about to turn around!! When I arrived at The Retreat I was greeted by a new Inspector
and a very calm Deputy Manager! Day one went really well and we were all prepared for
day two; breakfast laid on the table, kettle boiled and lots of happy smiley faces. Well
that was until the Inspector turned up and told us that she spilt a litre bottle of water
over her laptop. After an hour on the phone the Inspector stated that she could not
complete her inspection due to a non-working laptop. After some gentle persuasion the
Inspector agreed to complete day two and would hand-write her report, this meant I
would not get my grading until the next day. There were a few minor challenges during
the inspection but everyone in Care 4 Children pulled together and provided the
Inspector with the information that she required.

We nervously waited for our grading, looking at my phone every 30 seconds. Receiving
the news that we sustained our rating of OUTSTANDING was the best birthday present I
could have had! I am so proud of my team and could not be more pleased that the hard
work and dedication we show to our children was recognised.

The comments the Inspector made blew me away saying that this is the most homely
home that she has ever inspected and that she would love to do a shift at our home as it
is full of happy smiling children, the relationships we all have with other are truly
beautiful and the most genuine she has ever seen.

It goes to show that all of our hard work, commitment, dedication and passion has paid
off.“

We recently held two Head of Service recruitment days at Head Office and our managers and children were asked to help out. The
candidates were put through their paces but all in all, we had extremely positive feedback from everyone involved.

Beth Davies was successfully appointed and Beth will be starting her position as Head of Service in our Sexual Trauma division in
November 2018.

We would like to specially thank our children who went above and beyond helping out, with some even asking their own interview
questions!

We are very proud of their efforts and every candidate who attended said the same. Well done!
