Esperanza Fernández, renowned for her pure ESPERANZA
style, is one of the leading names in cante flamenco FERNÁNDEZ
today. Born in Sevilla into a gypsy family of
artists, she made her debut as lead singer in Mario
Maya’s Amargo and went on to share the stage
with Paco de Lucía, Camarón de la Isla,
and Enrique Morente. The recipient of
the prestigious Premio Andalucía Joven de
Flamenco, she has lent her powerful voice to
various musical styles, appearing with jazz bands,
chamber ensembles, and symphony orchestras.
Her ensemble features dancer Miguel Vargas and
musicians on guitar and percussion.
“Ms. Fernández’s mezzo-soprano has a gritty sound that is
indispensable for this passionate, earthy music, and she used
it resourcefully…varying its coloration and dynamics with

SON DE LA This program marks the New York debut of Spain’s acclaimed
FRONTERA new ensemble that brilliantly reinterprets flamenco guitar,
song and dance. Formed in tribute to Diego del Gastor
(the guitarist from Morón de la Frontera, Seville who
was known for his melding of Latin sounds),
Son de la Frontera is the first group to
prominently feature the Cuban trés (three-
stringed steel-stringed guitar) in flamenco.
The ensembleis comprised of
Raul Rodríguez (trés), Paco de Amparo
(Spanish guitar), Moi de Morón
(vocal), Pepe Torres (dance)
and Manuel Flores
(percussion, dance). Their
new CD will be released in
the US on the World Village
label in January 2006.

Latin Grammy Award-winning Vicente Amigo, who returns VICENTE
to the Flamenco Festival following his captivating performance AMIGO
in 2002, has been acclaimed as one of the most dazzling
flamenco guitarists of his generation and a likely successor
to Paco de Lucía. Hailing from Córdoba, Spain, he studied
and worked for years with Manolo Sanlúcar, accompanied
flamenco singers El Pele and Jose Mercé, toured as a soloist
around the world, and received many of Spain’s most
important awards and honors. His ensemble includes artists
on vocals, guitar and percussion, and dancer Rafael Campallo.

This gala all-star event features
the legendary Merche Esmeralda, noted
for her electrifying roles with the National
Ballet of Spain and her performances in Carlos
Saura’s Sevillanas and Flamenco; master dancer,
choreographer and teacher Manolo Marín, who will
direct the program; Javier Barón, the renowned
Giraldillo prize-winning dancer acclaimed for his
powerful and exquisite performances; the commanding
Rafael Campallo, who appeared as a featured soloist
with Compañía Andaluza de Danza in the 2004
Flamenco Festival; Soledad Barrio, famed star of
Noche Flamenca known for her smoldering performances;
and the elegant Adela Campallo, an important name
in the new generation of flamenco dancers.
Proceeds from this concert will help to maintain
WMI’s extensive concert series.

Spain’s renowned repertory company Ballet Flamenco BALLET FLAMENCO
de Andalucía, which appeared at the 2004 Flamenco DE ANDALUCÍA
Festival, is now under the direction of the celebrated
choreographer/ dancer Cristina Hoyos. Ms. Hoyos, who has WITH CRISTINA HOYOS
made an indelible imprint on the world of flamenco
dance, is famous for her work with Antonio Gades (Blood
Wedding, Carmen) and her own company, and is the
recipient of the National Dance Award, Spain’s highest
honor in dance. The 25-member troupe will present
Viaje al Sur (Journey to the South), a captivating program
staged by Ramón Oller that takes the audience through
the joy, passion and tragedy of Andalusia, the soul and
heartland of flamenco.

COMPAÑÍA This spellbinding Gypsy troupe from Jerez, celebrated for its raw
ANTONIO and earthy performances, will perform a traditional tablao. The
EL PIPA formidable Antonio El Pipa, from a dynasty of Gypsy artists,
appeared with Manuel Moreno and Cristina Hoyos,and toured
throughout the US with his company as part of WMI’s
Gypsy Caravan in 1999 and 2001. Appearing as special guest

artists will be the soulful singer Mariana Cornejo; the fiery dancer
Concha Vargas, who was called a “lusty gale-force performer”
in The New York Times, and Antonio’s charismatic
aunt Juana la del Pipa (dance, vocals).
