LA Boat Show drew more than just the curious

The Annual LA Boat show held at Cabrillo Way Marina, which ran from Thursday, 20 SEP 18 to Sunday,
23 SEP 18 was very well attended by those interested in the latest offered in the boating industry. The
perfect weather was also a contributing factor. Your Coast Guard Auxiliary was present again through
the arrangements made by Flotilla 05-05. Our own Flotilla 06-02 joined forces with them to help make
it a very productive event. Many people stopped to get information on Boating safety, the CA Boaters
Card, Vessel Examinations, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, or just to talk. We were only able to take photos
on Thursday and Sunday, but it should be noted who participated throughout this weekend detail. The
team consisted of Rick Ebel, 11sr DCAPT, Don Miller, VFC (05-05), Rudy Lopez Jr, FSO-PB (06-02),
Bill French (06-02), Bill Kopenski, FSO-PA (06-02), COMO Harry Jacobs (06-02), David Powell,
DCDR (05-10), Carl Harmon, FSO-PA (05-10), Steven Billis, FC (05-13) and Howard Kay FSO-PA (05-
13).

CLEAN UP AT PETERS LANDING
by Flotilla 06-02 Jim Haas, FSO-MS

Not long ago, Flotilla 06-06 Commander Brian Tankersley approached Flotilla 06-02 FSO-MS Jim
Haas with a request to assist in putting together a Clean Up Day in one of the local harbors. One of the
reasons for performing a Harbor Clean Up (besides helping get trash out of our Water Ways) was to
help Brian achieve his AUX-MEES (Auxiliary Prevention Outreach Specialist) Qualification.

On Saturday 29 SEP 18 Brian and fellow Flotilla member Jeremy Thio
along with Flotilla 06-02’s Debbie and Jim Haas embarked on a Clean
Up Day around Peter’s Landing in Huntington Harbor.

One thing must be said is that the Marina is very clean. There are
skimmers in and around the Harbor that are constantly skimming trash
24-7.

There was also some good interaction between the public and the team
during the cleanup with lots of “Thank Yous” for what was being done.
A special thank you to the Peter’s Landing Harbor Master for giving us
access to the docks, and to District Captain Bill Kopenski for arranging
Flotilla 66 Commander dock access with Peters Landing.

Flotilla 06-02 to have 5 TCOs by year’s end

On Saturday, 06 OCT 18, five members of Flotilla 06-02 attended the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s
Telecommunications Operator Course, or TCO which was held at the beautiful Bahia Corinthian Yacht
Club in Corona Del Mar. The day long course was presented by Flotilla 06-08’s Chuck Hutchings, VFC
and had Flotilla 06-01’s legendary Ham Radio Guru Gordon West as a mentor. This was an excellent
class presentation which was well received by the 15 attendees. By the end of this year, Flotilla 06-02
will have 5 trained, qualified TCOs ready for action. All photos by Rudy Lopez Jr, FSO-PB.
