How does a teenager like me deal with financial problem ?
A teenager is someone who is between 10 and 19 years old. In this age, life in today's
economic recession is very challenging with various challenges, obstacles and financial
constraints that happen to everyone.Financial problems have become a major problem that
plagues life today as all the things that are done require money so that going to the toilet is
also charged. The group that feels the most financial burden is actually the teenagers because
those who are already working must already have a fixed salary and more than the allowance
earned by students. This financial problem occurs when the teenager does not have enough
to spend and dares to take on debt which in turn can lead to bankruptcy at a young age. This
happens because when teenagers are having fun and stylish like people who are already
working.According to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (JPM), Datuk Seri Azalina
Othman in Bernama (2016) said that 1,157 bankruptcy cases involved individuals under the
age of 25 it is also alarming to note that in the same period. The question is how does the
approach effective a teenager like me deal with financial problem? Here, I will share five points
how to handle the financial problem among teenagers like me that is by making a spending
budget on a monthly basis, make price comparisons in an item before making a purchase,
learning to say no, get extra money through part-time work and did not make loans from any
party especially the ahlong group.
The way teenagers like me deal with financial problems is by making a spending budget
on a monthly basis. In this case, teenagers can list financial resources from parents,
allowances, scholarships or part-time work salaries which can then list expenses according to
their respective categories such as food and beverage expenses, books, savings for
emergencies and other expenses. A clear example, teenagers can also put a limit on monthly
expenses for each of these items. This can be seen through the diagram below:-
EXPENSES COST
Food RM 300
Book RM 200
RM 300
Emergency RM 200
Other expenses
As a result, the financial management of teenagers themselves will be more organized if they
know the position of cash flow, that is the amount of money coming in and out each month.
Not only that, teenagers can also use online applications such as Spendee, Wallet Budget
and Mint. Through such applications, it is able to monitor spending movements online through
a registered account and also as a day -to -day financial management platform. Usually, at
the end of the month, this application will provide a summary of all available expenses and
income.
The way teenagers like me deal with financial problems is that teenagers make price
comparisons in an item before making a purchase. As is well known, the construction of
supermarkets today has been further expanded especially in urban areas such as Tesco,
Giant Hypermarket, Mydin Supermarket, and Econsave. The existence of various
supermarkets allows consumers to make informed choices of goods by comparing the prices
of goods offered in each supermarket. In this regard, every supermarket has made price
promotions of goods especially during the festive season or public holidays in an effort to
attract consumers and try to attract consumers to buy in their supermarkets by selling goods
at cheaper prices. Each supermarket will also offer cheaper prices of goods to consumers who
become members with reward points offered and consumers can redeem reward points to get
the goods offered. Therefore, wise teenagers will see advertisements issued in print or online
to enable them to plan a purchase by buying the price of the item when the price is cheap. As
a clear example, teenagers want to buy a packet of milo at Econsave supermarket for RM
12.50 compared to the regular price of RM 16.50 at other supermarkets.Strictly here,
teenagers compare the price of an item before making a purchase in order to deal with the
financial problems faced by the teenagers themselves.
Learning to say no is also one of the steps teenagers take in dealing with financial
problems. In this context, there are among the other friends come from well -to -do, affluent
families and their luxurious lives. So teenagers like me have to say no to things that can lead
to enormous waste and loss. As strong evidence, students do not have to eat out every day,
just buy at the cafe or just cook for themselves. Every weekend, going to the mall to watch
movies can be changed by cycling around campus and jogging while enjoying the beauty of
nature. This teen needs to say no and reject the invitation in a good way not to follow and join
in such a group. Not that it can't be, but be careful in your shopping. The impact here is that
teenagers can reduce their expenses and even adopt a healthier lifestyle such as cooking
their own food and jogging on the weekends.
At the same time, teenagers also get extra money through part-time work. This is due
to insufficient needs and expenses through available resources. If teenagers need extra
money for other needs to support life, they need to earn extra income through work part time
and not with the help of debt from any party. As strong evidence, students can work as
customer service, delivery assistants at GrabFood, Foodpanda and Ninja Van, employees at
restaurants, be tutors or tuition teachers and so on. This can be further confirmed when Nadia
Yusra Mohd Nazri (2017) says that part time job will reduce the problem of students lazy and
hanging out, increase economic when all students working, help students achieve the
Malaysia mission and get a positive and skills of communication either physical and mental. In
addition to being able to cover insufficient expenses, it can also hone talents and gain new
experiences in the life of a teenager. But keep in mind if a teenager wants to do a part -time
job, make sure the job doesn’t interfere with your main motive as a student who has to attend
classes and complete all the assignments given.Time management is very important when
wanting to balance time between study and work.
Not only that, a teenager did not make loans from any party especially the ahlong group
which has no guarantee to be trusted. It is common knowledge that, borrowing this money
should not be done to anyone because teenagers will fail to control their finances and worry
and be worried about not being able to pay it back. This is said so because when a teenager
borrows money from them, the teenager will receive an unreasonable interest rate to pay it
back. This can be seen through the diagram as below:-
Amount borrowed RM1,000
Interest to be paid (per month) RM300
RM3,600
Interest for 12 months loan RM4,600
The total amount to be paid
If a teenager is insufficient in financial resources, ask the closest and trusted party such as
family members or friends and not to an unlicensed lender like this. This will happen because
when the teenager makes a loan from the wrong party, Important personal documents will be
taken. As a clear example, personal documents such as identity cards, passports and bank
cards are often kept as security deposits to ensure continued payment even if it is illegal. This
is also to show one of the tactics which they use to ensure that the teenager will not run away
before settling his debt. In addition, the teenager will also experience physical and mental
problems. When the teenager is unable to repay his debt, it is not uncommon for them to force
The teen to make payments through threats that can lead to violence. This is even worse if
they will not hesitate to involve the teen's family members to force his family to settle or pay
all the outstanding debts.
In the nutshell, now you know about there are five points how to handle the financial
problem among teenagers like me that is by making a spending budget on a monthly basis,
make price comparisons in an item before making a purchase, learning to say no, get extra
money through part-time work and did not make loans from any party especially the ahlong
group.Through this financial management, teenagers like me are able to cultivate discipline
and perseverance in themselves.Upon leaving college or university, teenagers will not only
enter a new era but are also exposed to planning and management in the world of
finance.Adolescents will also be efficient in making decisions. Therefore, teenagers are
reminded not to experience too much stress and enjoy or live life as a student because it is a
very meaningful experience and will be remembered throughout life.A string of that, teenagers
need to plan more carefully because through planning will determine our behavior and if
teenagers can not control their finances then will experience difficulties in daily life.May all
teenagers be sensitive to this as it will have an impact in life as a human being. If it is not the
teenagers themselves who change then who else?
