KEARNEY JUNIOR HIGH
FACULTY/STAFF HANDBOOK
2015 – 2016
Working together to become life-long learners.
This manual and the board policy and regulations book should be read and
studied carefully. If you have questions, contact your principal or assistant
principal.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. The building hours are from 7:00 AM until 3:15 PM—teaching staff hours run 7:15-
2:40. In the event you need to leave the building during the day, inform the
administration and sign the sign-out sheet in the office.
2. All exterior doors will remain locked and closed during school hours. The key scan
system will be set so the front doors and the back circle doors will be unlocked before
school and after school for students to enter the building.
3. Mailboxes are located in the office and should be checked daily. Email should also be
checked daily.
4. Supply requisitions are available in the office. The principal must approve all regular
purchase orders. The school will not be responsible for payment of materials without
proper authorization.
5. If you must be absent from school, log on to AESOP by 6:00 AM. Absentee forms
should be signed in the office the day you return to school. Do not directly call a
substitute and schedule that way.
CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION
1. ONLY TEACH THE BOARD APPROVED WRITTEN CURRICULUM.
2. Good lesson plans are vital to successful teaching. Each teacher’s plan will vary
according to their own individual style, but the emphasis should be on the learning
objective and the desired student outcomes. Develop an efficient routine for the non-
teaching tasks that are a part of every period
3. Videos should be used sparingly in the classroom and should be tied directly to the
curriculum for enhancement of regular instruction. Movies should not be shown in their
entirety during class without administration approval.
4. Establish a fair and consistent grading system. If you use weighted grades be sure
that you can explain how your grade is figured to students and parents.
5. Be aware that homework is a big factor parents use to evaluate their child’s
education. Teachers who assign homework as an afterthought/punishment/busy
work send a negative message to students and parents. Homework should be used
as practice and not to introduce new topics and should be represented as such on a
student’s grade.
6. Plan for the day when you will need a substitute in your classroom. Have lesson plans,
seating charts, and other information organized and available in a subfolder. Discuss
with your students in advance concerning your expectations for their performance with
a substitute teacher. Make available any information regarding the exit of students
from class during crisis management (see Sub Folder sheet).
7. Take care that your relationship with students is on a professional level.
8. Students should be actively engaged for the entire period and should be dismissed
by the teacher, not the bell. Students should not line up at the door before release.
STUDENT SUPERVISION
1. Students must be supervised at all times. Do not leave students unsupervised
at any time. If you need to leave your class, have another teacher supervise your
room or contact the office and we can come help.
2. Between classes, stand outside your door to meet/greet students and supervise
halls/lockers.
3. Students will not be allowed to remain after school unless they are under direct
supervision of a staff member.
4. Please keep the office informed of the days you will be having clubs or keeping
students after school so we can give correct information when called with
questions.
5. If supervising students after school, you are responsible for those students until they
leave school grounds.
AM/PM supervision
Everyone will be required to supervise daily before school.
Morning: the morning bell will ring at 7:15. Teachers will be expected to be outside of
your classroom monitoring hallways and your classroom at this time.
Afternoon: Teachers will be expected to be outside of their classrooms monitoring the
hallway until all students have left their respective area.
HOURLY ATTENDANCE
Attendance must be taken at the beginning of each hour at your computer. Please
mark any student that is not in your classroom as absent. The Secretaries will change
any absences of students that are on field trips or school sponsored events.
Please also record daily attendance in your grade book. You may need to refer to this if
something happens in PowerSchool or in the event of an evacuation.
RELEASING STUDENTS FROM THE CLASSROOM
• After the tardy bell has rung students should not be out in the hallways. Do not
release the students frivolously to go to lockers, restroom, etc. Any student leaving
your class should have a pass. The only exception to this would be an immediate
and urgent need to visit the restroom. DO NOT release students to their parent
from your room. They must be checked out through the office.
CAFETERIA PROCEDURES
1. Teachers may eat in the teachers’ lounge, but we ask that you assist the cafeteria
supervisors if there are problems with your students.
2. Lock your classroom and turn off the lights while your class is at lunch.
LIBRARY USE
1. The Library Media Center is available for teachers to reserve for their classes. A
teacher may reserve the computer side, the book side, or both.
2. All audio-visuals, chromebooks, and computer labs will be handled through the LMC.
Please schedule those items as far in advance as possible.
3. The Library will open at 7:15 and close at 3:00. If you need a student to go before 7:15
or stay after 3:00 – please check with Amy and write the student a pass.
4. Zero Hour and After School Tutoring has computers available for student use.
ANNOUNCEMENTS – if you would like to put something in the daily
announcements please email the Secretaries at [email protected] or
[email protected] that information and they will insert it in the program. Be cognizant
when writing entries that parents can have announcements sent to them daily through
POWERSCHOOL. Email Hayley Howard if you want anything on the televised news. It
is an expectation that students watch KKJH every day. This is the only way we are able
to get information to them. Please let Mr. Hoffman know if your room does not have the
capability to watch KKJH during Seminar.
PHONE USE
Cell Phones and other Personal Communication Devices should be turned off or on vibrate
and are not to be used while supervising or in the presence of students unless the device is
aiding in the lesson. If an emergency arises, please have another staff member supervise
your students while using the device. Classroom phones are not to be used by students for
their personal use. Students sent to the office to use the student phone must have a pass
from the teacher.
WORK REQUESTS
If you have a maintenance/custodial/technology request email Mike Hoffman and he will
process the request in the district’s tracking system. If there has not been any progress on
your request, see him and he will follow up.
TEACHER DRESS CODE
All district teachers are expected to dress professionally. No jeans except Fridays and
special days. Jean days should be spirit related. IE: Kearney Apparel.
SCHOOL HEALTH AID
A full-time health aid is available to administer first aid and health services to students and
staff. Obvious illness or injury should be referred to the office and/or health aid. Error on
the side of caution—when in doubt, send them. Injury reports must be completed and
signed the day of the injury (available in the office). Please escort students with any head
injury or series injury to the office. Do not send them alone.
The health aid may also be available for instruction in your classes. Requests for this
should be made in the health aid’s office.
STAFF ABSENCES
When you need to take a personal day, a professional day, or a day for student supervision,
please log in to AESOP well in advance so those can be approved by administration and
we can get the best possible substitute.
LEAVING THE BUILDING
If you need to leave the building, clear it with administration. If approved, let the
secretaries know so that they do not give misleading information to parents, students, or
others seeking you. DO NOT just inform the secretaries without approval from
administration. - Per Policy
FUND RAISERS
1. No class time should be used to promote or participate in fund raisers.
2. Fund raisers need to be approved by administration 15 days before they are set to
begin.
3. Fund raiser forms are with Cathi
REIMBURSEMENTS
If you want to be reimbursed for travel, you will need to turn in a reimbursement form to
Cathi two weeks before you travel. We will need to have a purchase order approved before
your trip.
COPY MACHINES
Please take care of your own copy needs. Do not send students to the office with copy
work. If you would like the office assistants to make copies for you, please fill out the
form in the work room. They will copy items based on need and will be placed in your
mailbox. Please do not send tests or assessments for office assistants to run.
LUNCH PRICES – 15-16 Students 2.20 Teachers 2.60 extra milk .40 Breakfast
1.60
VISITORS IN THE BUILDING
Parents and others wishing to visit your classroom must follow the correct procedure as
stated in Board Policy prior to arrival. Please see administration if a parent requests to visit
your class. All visitors should have a badge from office. Refer them back to the office if
they do not have one.
CLASSROOM STATEMENT
Classroom teachers hold the responsibility of providing appropriate lessons and activities
that allow their students to meet their grade level objectives.
Whereas some materials could be deemed as questionable or sensitive in nature, teachers
should make a reasonable attempt to inform parents of the subject matter. Opportunities
for parents to preview sensitive materials should be given so that parental permission is
granted or denied based on knowledge rather than speculation. This should be done in an
advanced time frame so that alternative materials can be prepared for students whose
parents object to the planned activity.
If materials chosen are of concern to a patron of the district, the Kearney R-1Board of
Education Policy IIAC should be used to process the complaint. This process, which
involves an ad hoc review committee, composed of parents, teachers, librarians, and one or
more students, shall be followed and the materials can be retained or withdrawn from use.
POLICY OF NONDISCRIMINATION
The Board of Education believes in the right of every student to receive equal opportunities
in all educational programs and activities conducted by the school district. The Board also
believes in the right of every qualified individual to expect fair and equal treatment both as
applicants for employment and as employees.
It is the policy of the Board to accord equal consideration and impartial treatment
regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, socio-economic status, marital
status, sex, age, handicapping conditions, or organizational memberships. This policy will
prevail in all matters concerning the staff, student, the public, the educational programs and
services of the district and individuals with whom the board does business.
The Board has designated Assistant Superintendent Randy Smith to act as the district’s
nondiscrimination compliance coordinator. Any person with a comment or concern may
contact the coordinator at the Kearney R-1 Board of Education office, 1002 S. Jefferson,
Kearney, MO 64060. The phone number is (816) 628-4116.
No person shall suffer reprisals as a result of having initiated or presented a grievance.
KJH – Emergency Procedure Instructions Summary
Please review emergency procedures with your students for the upcoming drills. Locate your red/green cards
(if you need one email Mike Hoffman). Make sure you have up-to-date rosters for all classes and keep them
with you at all times during these drills. Make sure your sub folder contains up-to-date instructions for
substitute teachers including the location of your ERIP rosters, red/green cards, and a copy of this summary.
All staff should have in their possession at all times of an emergency roster of students to take roll and
account for those who may be missing. Please signify all clear with green flash card. If someone is
missing or you have an extra student, the red flash card should be displayed. Be prepared to provide
the name(s) of student(s) you are missing or extra students you have. Please leave instructions with your
substitute plans at all times.
Fire Drill--Facility Evacuation
The fire alarm will be sounded to alert evacuation of the building.
Familiarize yourself and your students with exit course and assembly area. Upon learning of the need to
evacuate the building, specific information may be communicated by intercom or two way radio. Students are
to execute the following procedures:
*Listen and follow teacher instructions
*Remain calm
*Walk quickly without pushing or running
*Proceed to the designated gathering area for your class/group away from the school building
*If you are outdoors, stay outdoors. You will be informed of the designated gathering area
*Re-enter building only after the all clear has been given
*If building is not able to be re-entered, you will be instructed to report to a designated evacuation area
Tornado Drill
An announcement will be made over the intercom or two way radio instructing everyone to move to a shelter
location. Students are to execute the following procedures:
*Listen and follow teacher instructions
*Remain calm
*Depending on the emergency situation and your location, you may be instructed to move to a shelter
location
*If relocation is required, walk quickly without pushing/running to designated gathering area for your
class/group
*Move away from windows/glass
*If outdoors, immediately re-enter facility and request assistance in locating a shelter location for your class
*Stay put until instructed otherwise
Earthquake Drill
An intercom announcement will be made for drill.
*Take immediate cover under desk, table, etc.
*Stay away from windows
*Remain calm
*If outdoors, do not re-enter building
*Stay put until instructed otherwise

*Remain in class until “All-Clear” has been announced—do not dismiss class if the bell rings prior to “All-
Clear.”
*Continue with class activities
*Listen for any additional announcements
*If you are in a hallway, seek safety in the nearest classroom/restroom/office area
Armed Intruder Drill
An intercom announcement will inform all of the need to execute Intruder Action Plan. Specific information
will be communicated by intercom as it becomes available. Students and all personnel are to listen to
announcements and exercise the Intruder Action Plan including the following in an effort to reach safety:
*ALERT- Attempt to alert building occupants of armed intruder by intercom
*ESCAPE- Attempt to flee to safety via any viable route
*LOCKDOWN- If escape is not an option, lock all doors & windows; turn out lights and move out of
sightlines
*INFORM- Call 911 and provide any details. Announce any details of the intruder’s whereabouts via
intercom
*COUNTER- This is the last option: use any available resource as a weapon to fend off an attack
Staff Emergency Expectations/Responsibilities
After your students have taken cover for the drill, please take roll and then display your green card in your
classroom window facing the hall or classroom door or window if all students are accounted. Display your
red card if you are missing a student or have an extra student.
Designated staff members will check all hallways for green cards. If you display a red card, be ready to
provide names of missing student(s) to designated staff member who will, in turn, call the student's name into
the office. Also display your red card if you have an extra student with your class/group and provide that
student's name to the designated staff member as an extra student for whom you have accounted. We must be
able to account for all students during these drills.

Designated Reporting Staff Members should "buddy up" with nearby staff who will assume supervision
responsibilities for your class while you are asked to walk through your assigned halls (listed above), taking
note of the red cards displayed and writing down the names of the missing/extra students. The designated
staff should then immediately radio the office or call a secretary's office extension and report these students
or indicate that all students are accounted. We will not give the all clear until all designated staff members
have reported and we have accounted for all students/staff, so please take care of this quickly.
Drills are to be conducted professionally and students/staff accounted as would be done in an actual
emergency. Thank you for your cooperation.
DISCIPLINE PROCESS
Setting Behavioral Expectations for Students
1. Teachers should identify expectations for student behavior and communicate those
expectations to the students.
2. Post classroom rules. Try to word your rules as positive as possible and keep them
broad so as to cover most classroom incidents.
3. Try to keep the number of rules to a minimum.
4. School-wide rules and safety procedures should be explained carefully
Flagrant violations: Send the offender(s) directly to the office. If a student is endangering
someone or making it impossible for you to conduct class, they need to be referred.
Routine violations: General steps to take are as follows:
Step 1
• Calmly isolate the student to a specified place inside or outside the classroom. Talk to the
student when you have time. If the student is sent to the hall, no more than 2-3 minutes should
elapse before you talk to them and bring them back into the classroom.
• Describe the behavior you witnessed.
• Check out your perception.
• Explain the effect of that behavior on you and/or the class.
• Explore alternatives to the behavior observed.
• Agree on a future course of action.
• Allow the student to return to class.
• Make note of the incident.
Step 2
• Repeat the steps listed above
• Let the student know you will be contacting parents by telephone or note. CONTACT THE
PARENT. Do not have students contact their parents in front of other students. Communicate
what’s happened up to this point and seek the parents’ help in improving their child’s behavior.
Set a specific date for a follow-up conference or note. Document the parental
communication.
Step 3
• Repeat Steps 1 and 2 if desired
• Assign a Detention – a detention should be assigned before an office discipline referral is
sent to the office unless a major offense occurs. Notify the parent of the assigned detention
date and time.
ALL VIOLATIONS SHOULD BE HANDLED IN A CALM AND PROFESSIONAL MANNER.
Remember – the teacher is the adult in the class. Intimidation is not an effective form of classroom
management. Unless a student is jeopardizing the safety of others, do not put your hands on a student.
If a student refuses to comply with directions and does not respond, call the office for an administrator
to handle the situation. If these steps are not followed, no office discipline will be handed out. Due to
FERPA regulations, any office assigned discipline is between the student, parents, and the
administrator.
Disciplinary Referrals (discipline notice)
Disciplinary referrals forms are available in the main office. When a student is sent to the office for disciplinary reasons,
the referring teacher must complete a discipline notice. For routine violations, your classroom behavior form should be
filled out as violations occur. If a referral form is not completed, no action will be taken. You must have documentation
of parent contact and detentions served for the offense attached to the referral.
Please be certain to fill out the referral in its entirety. You need not write a novel, but give enough detail so that an
accurate account of the incident is given. Please try not to editorialize, as these referral forms are considered legal
documents, and might become public record in case of litigation. State the nature of the offense factually (what you saw
and heard). If witnesses are the source of the referral, name those witnesses so they can be interviewed (if witnesses are
mentioned on the referral, make sure the offending student does not see the names). Be sure to fill out a referral for
each student you refer.
The disposition of the problem will be noted on the referral and filed in the student’s disciplinary records.
SUB FOLDER
Please see that you have a folder/binder with the following information. Place the folder in
the bottom right hand drawer of your desk.
• Lesson plan(s) detailing desired teacher/student participation.
• Attendance information and procedures.
• Up-to-date seating charts.
• Textbooks.
• Answer book/key.
• Tardy procedures.
• Daily schedule (special classes, procedures for changing classes, restroom
procedures, assemblies, etc).
• Lunch-related procedures (schedule).
• Medical/health conditions of any students who may require attention.
• Instructional adaptations required for specific students.
• Rules of the classroom.
• Emergency procedures in case of fire, tornado, or any other threat to student safety.
• Special duties (hall supervision, lunch room duty, etc).
• Name of student(s) who may be called upon to assist you in locating any materials
that might be needed.
• Discipline procedures.
• Name of contact teacher who might be helpful.
• Building telephone-usage procedures.

before the scheduled time or work beyond the scheduled time without
permission may be subject to discipline, including termination.
16. School employees, other than commissioned law enforcement officers, shall not
strip search students, as defined in state law, except in situations where an
employee reasonably believes that the student possesses a weapon, explosive or
substance that poses an imminent threat of physical harm to the student or others
and a commissioned law enforcement officer is not immediately available.
17. School employees shall not direct a student to remove an emblem, insignia or
garment, including a religious emblem, insignia or garment, as long as such
emblem, insignia or garment is worn in a manner that does not promote
disruptive behavior.
18. State law prohibits teachers from participating in the management of a
campaign for the election or defeat of a member of the Board of Education that
employs such teacher.
19. Employees will not use district funds or resources to advocate, support or
oppose any ballot measure or candidate for public office.
