STUDENT EDITORIAL TEAM Editorial Note

‘Writing is the painting of the voice,’ they say, and rightly so. The editorial team comprises
such talented writers; young people who wove their thoughts into words, and worked
collectively to put out this magazine as it is today.

Being selected to be a part of this team was both challenging and exciting. An interview
was conducted for interested students, during which we were questioned why we wanted
to join the group. Most answered, ‘Writing is my passion,’ and it is indeed evident from
the wonderful write-ups. Some had experience writing, while others were amateurs, but
both had expressed their zeal in writing vividly.

The chosen few were assigned topics, about which we wrote creatively, the articles
gripping and alluring. We provided much-needed insight into the events going on in the
school, the winners of various competitions and much more.

Needless to say, a lot of hard work was put into the writing, editing and designing the
magazine by everyone involved. Weput in our best efforts to attain the perfection we
aspired for. The final product showed a canvas upon which various colors were splashed,
but together, they made a beautiful painting. We hope you enjoy it.

Powerful focus with hands on and minds on. Testimony

Goals are set by all of us to accomplish those targets which are a little
beyond what we think we can achieve. Setting goals gives us a long-
term vision and short-term motivation. It helps us to organize our
time and resources to accomplish way beyond what is expected of
us.

For these reasons, we as a school also believe that goal setting is highly
important and hence, every year we set goals to challenge and push
ourselves beyond limits and achieve greater heights.

This academic year our goal is “POWERFUL FOCUS WITH HANDS
ON AND MINDS ON”. The aim is to focus more on “doing learning”
and stimulating minds to think, for better learning, for a learning that lasts.

We as educationists understand that the ultimate aim of learning is not just understanding
a concept or scoring well in a test, it is way beyond that. It is how one applies what he/ she
learns in the classroom in daily life. Hands on and minds on approach, we feel is essential
for holistic learning and building lasting knowledge. This approach lets the students
“do” and “think”, two very integral parts of the whole learning process. Researches have
shown that students learn best when they can see, touch, hear and do.

“If I learn something “hands on and minds on”, it would mean I give it my full attention
and do it with complete focus. Therefore I feel that the skills I learn through this approach
would remain with me lifelong” - Says a student.

Being passionate about teaching, we always try coming up with new methods of making
the whole teaching learning experience more effective, meaningful and fun. But the
hands on, minds on approach has hands down, shown us the best results. This form of
learning encourages students to be investigators, to find their answers and to become
more independent learners. Since they are engaged with both their hands and minds, it
helps them develop a deeper understanding of the subject.

This teaching - learning methodology also makes the classrooms a more fun place since the
focus is not on theoretical learning from textbooks but on actually doing and learning.

All this topped with Focus makes it so much more relevant and meaningful, Focus brings
in the concentration it demands attention.

Every year when the goal is set it carves the path and plans the direction of our academic
endeavors. Which in other words we could say, “POWERFUL FOCUS WITH HANDS
ON AND MINDS ON”.

Student Testimonials “Where the mind is without fear and the
head is held high”

-Rabindranath Tagore

This has been the motto of our school ever since…and will always remain to be so. This
exquisite quote was framed by Rabindranath Tagore, one of the legendary poets of India.
But since last year a new enterprise was incorporated, every year a new motto is taken
up under the indigenous motto. Last year it was-‘Touch the sky with glory’ and this year
it is- ‘Powerful focus with minds on, hands on…’ This motto apprises us to concentrate
at all times and help ourselves as well as others. A short sentence or phrase chosen as
encapsulating the beliefs or ideals of an individual, family, or institution. This motto
keeps us thinking again and again whether to focus or not, the answer is always to focus.
The previous academic year the motto was undoubtedly a success as students adhered
to the motto by all means. This year till this date the motto has obviously been followed
promptly by all the acorns. Now it’s the duty of each of us to fulfill the motto and our
own goals too.

Shreya Patnaik

Powerful focus with minds on, hands on
Our theme this year is Powerful Focus Hands on Minds on. I think, so far, that it sums
up my first term’s goal pretty well. I’ve focused intensely on my studies, allocating time
and effort to each and every subject. With help from design modules and teachers, the
result was straight A1s, and I couldn’t have been more delighted. I’ve also directed my
attention towards writing a story, and I’m pleased to say it’s coming on well.

Tanuja

“Education is not about learning facts, but training of mind to think.” said Albert
Einstein.

According to me, in 21st century, education is definitely not something based entirely on
the textbook. The new generation prefers faster and more efficient learning. This includes
technological learning, experiential learning as well as theoretical learning. This is exactly
what our theme for this year refers to. “Powerful focus with hands-on minds-on”. Hands-
on, minds on activities embolden students to become active participants in learning about
the world around them, and also help them in sharpening their focus.

This personally helped me in improving my conceptual understanding of all the subjects.
Not only in academics, but I feel proud to bring laurels to the school by competing in
the National skating and State Skating Hockey championship along with fulfilling my
passion to exhibit a few paintings of mine in the Art exhibition held by the School.

We’re often convinced in our own voices, believing that we know what’s best for our Student Testimonials
learning. But according to me, that is a misunderstanding .We feel that just reading and
memorizing and getting the marks we’ve longed for, serves the purpose of education.
However in the long run, conceptual understanding often through technology and
experimental processes are what make us knowledgeable. This year’s motto has boosted
forward the pace and depth of learning for me. It has also helped me realize why strategic
learning is important. And I now know that practical wisdom is what matters the most as
we grow up as young citizens.

Rishita Devarapalli

The theme of 2015-2016 was ‘Powerful focus, hands on, minds on”. We steered our
energy and attention with rigor and persistence to accomplish the success we anticipated
for. We focused on all round development including academic as well as extracurricular
activities. This helped us in learning new subjects and also in improving our personalities.
With determination we pushed to the limits overcoming our weaknesses through new
competitions such as Science Fundas along with Creative Writing, Human calculator,
Speakers at Silver Oaks, Spell Bee and Geography Bee.

Vaishnavi Raghavajosyula

“This is one of the goals for success. When our hands and minds are working with
complete concentration there is no one who can distract us and we ascend towards the
stairs of success.

It helped me a lot while I was preparing for my exams; moreover it took me to the
success.

I think this may prove to be helpful to you, as this worked out as nothing can beat a
strong determination and working hands.”

Student Council OATH-TAKING CEREMONY

With the advent of each new academic year the silver oaks family gets all set to elect

The student council begins their action plan with the oath-taking ceremony. This year,
the school took pride in inviting Sqd. Ldr. Tulika Rani as the chief guest for felicitating
the oath-taking ceremony. Sqd. Ldr.Tulika Rani, an Indian Air Force officer, posted as a
squadron leader, is the first woman from Uttar Pradesh, to have unfurled the tricolor atop
the Mount Everest. The lead for the oath was given by her. This ceremony was celebrated
along with the proud parents of the council members. It ended ceremoniously, with Sqd.
Ldr.Tulika Rani imparting a few words of wisdom to the students. This gave the student

Note from the President Student Council

Welcome to Silver Oaks School, where the head is held high and the
mind is without fear. In today’s fast-paced, technological society,
getting advanced learning and a higher education is essential to
ensuring one’s continual prosperity and quality of life.

Our School works with young learners in developing the cognitive
learning skills, study habits and leadership capabilities that they need to succeed in the
academic environment. More than this, students must also learn to become well-rounded
individuals, with creative flair and vibrant curiosity.

Top universities aren’t just looking at Academic scores anymore. In fact they’re
digging deeper, looking for students who possess perspicacious intellect and strong
communication skills. Succeeding academically isn’t just about getting good grades, it’s
about developing an ethic around the ideals of personal intellectual development and the
habits of good citizenship.

The School believes that a student who can lead oneself with conscience will invariably
conquer test scores with confidence. It is the Inside out approach that would empower
them with life skills and values to excel in any endeavor. The School instills these values
within us, values that serve us well throughout our academic careers, as well as in our
careers after school has ended.

The well thought out policies in School for Stationery, Handwriting & Creative Writing,
Reading , Language ,Homework and Assessment are the bedrock on which loftier goals
of civic and social responsibility are placed through Me and My Country , Mantras of
Mahatma, Leader in Me and to live life the lean way.

On behalf of the student council, educators, staff and friends, I hope that you enjoy the
many benefits that an education from Silver Oaks - The School of Hyderabad provides.

Homage to Dr.Abdul Kalam Homage to Dr. Abdul Kalam

The recent demise of “Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam” has
left us spell bound. He was a great;politician, author, professor,
administrator and a scientist.

The missile man of India. An individual with great determination
who led our country during his tenure of Presidency.

You cannot find many who excel brilliantly in many fields, at the
same time, all throughout staying humble and true to the end. APJ
Abdul Kalam was one of them. It is hard to believe that a youngster who started off as a
newspaper boy grew up to occupy the highest office in the country.

India’s “Missile Man”, as he was dubbed in the popular press, Abdul Kalam was a rocket
scientist who rose to prominence as the head of the country’s successful civilian space
and missile defense programs.

Kalam, when elected president, disregarded its customary ceremonial role and reached
out to ordinary people, particularly the youth, of which all consider him as their role
model and inspiration.

The shock of his untimely death left us bereaved. To commemorate his extraordinary, yet
simple life, we at Silver Oaks School sang the song that we had written and composed for
him earlier when he came visiting us in Hyderabad. Through it, we sang of our love and
respect, keeping him alive through its heart-touching lyrics.

Leela Ma’am had penned its lyrics. The song was aired on various channels, including
CNN-IBN live, with our music and dance teacher,John Sir, Ranjani Ma’am and a couple
of students. His wise words, ‘Thinking should become your capital asset, no matter
whatever ups and downs you come across in your life,’ will never be forgotten.

Crossing the Chasm: Leadership from Inside- Out Leadership

Silver Oaks has always been a place where young bright students are groomed to become
leaders. Our school motto is ‘Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high’.
Throughout the years as students, we have had many opportunities to hone our skills by
attending workshops and through various other programs.

From the 3rd of July to the 8th, the senior students of our school had a great learning
experience about what leadershipactually is:a processora quality? Atrait ora characteristic
developed? Is it for the better of the society or for promoting one’s opinion?

Josh Kleinman and Manojna Nadumuri, , two senior high school students from a gifted
school in Chicago, took the pleasure of travelling to India meeting to conduct a five day
workshop on leadership for the students of our school. The agenda for the workshop was

simple: 4 hours a day, 2 in the morning and 2 in the
evening with different modules each day for us
to learn and work on.

The main goal was for us to learn the pure
definition of leadership which is:

“Leadership is a process through which an
individual influences a group of individuals to
achieve a common goal”

Interesting activities were conducted for better
understanding of the concepts where we were
also exposed to various perspectives on situations. We learnt about ethical and moral
choices, and how vulnerability can play a role in leader being developed. It was a great
opportunity to open up our mind, let go of our fears and share our own views during
the discussion. As the facilitators were students of our age, it was a classroom of friends
sharing and learning with each other.

Each day we looked at leadership through
different aspects and views. We learned about
the various types of leading, and decision making
of a leader, how biases or genders can affect
leadership, how a leader is developed and much
more. We also had debates about well known
leaders (Hitler was impossible to leave out) and
best choices to choose in certain cases such as the
decisions being made by the government these
days. Through all this learning, fun was always
a part of it.

Each moment spent with the Josh and Manojna during our workshop days were totally
worth it as they were filled with spirit and friendly joy. When they left to their home
across the world their knowledge shared with is remained with us and always will. They
gave us our mission, should we choose to accept it, to grasp every opportunity possible
to bring out the best of us and influence the best we can.

Hyderabad. The plenary of speakers, quality of the committee, participation of students
across the globe, thrust on taking up leadership roles to solve pressing global issues,
talent nights to socialize and understand each other better were some of the highlights of
this conference.

Leadership The Power Of One

A Person Can Be Characterised By Two Methods, An
Individual Or A Dependent Person.

Mr. Krishna Sagar Rao, came to School to share his views on how to become an independent
individual.

Mr. Krishna is the official spokes person for BJP in Telangana. He is a dedicated party
worker and an influential workshop leader. His
workshop session was lively and enthusiastic
.

He helped the ninth and tenth graders to bring
out our true potential through an interactive
workshop. It was an eye opening session. We
feel that he invoked in us the idea that every
single person has a unique identity.

We were told about the effective and ineffective
qualities that bind every single person and
sometimes cutting them off was the only way
to make ourselves free individuals. He told us that trust and hope were indeed required
to overcome obstacles in life.

He had told us to introspect and share with friends and family. There are many counterfeit
copies in the world. Are you one of them or an original individual?

SUMMIT YOUR EVEREST

Leadership On April 14th, Sqd. Ldr.Tulika Rani, an Indian Air Force officer, who is posted as the
squadron leader, had an interactive session with the senior students. Sqd. Ldr.Tulika
Rani is the first women ever from Uttar Pradesh to unfurl the tri colour atop the Mount
Everest- 29,029 feet above sea level. Her session inspired the students to find their passion,
and to excel in what catches the spark in their eyes. She had spoken about her journey,
her trials, the hurdles and everything else that came across her way to get to the peak of
Mount Everest. It was a pleasure and a wonderful experience of having her interact with
the students in the school.

Pre Primary Student Led Conference :
‘My Learned World’

A platform created for the students to exhibit their learning. The students invited their
parents to showcase all that they had learnt in the first semester. The students on the
other hand were surprised by the colourful, innovative manipulative their teachers had
created for them to work upon. They proudly exhibited their learning in front of their
parents and the parents graded them accordingly. Parents were overwhelmed to see their
kids academic performance. The parents too were challenged by their kids with different
activities and they were in turn thrilled to grade their parents. Over all this, was a fun
filled activity for the students, parents and the teachers as well.

The Power of Art and Colour Creative Prowess

Aristotle once said, “The power of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things,
but their inner significance.” He couldn’t have been more right. A passion to express
themselves exists in every single person, although the means may differ. However the
people who divulge themselves through art are a relative few, and the art exhibition
displayed by Silver Oaks was the perfect opportunity to reveal their talent.
Many students of the senior wing and art teachers Mr. Anand and Mr. Pavan, the Art
specialists, put in their hard work and effort into creating beautiful, colorful masterpieces,
each unveiling an important message behind. Pollution, women empowerment, education,
saving water, and other social evils were some concepts that were worked on, mainly to
enlighten those who seek to comprehend the significance.
It took a while – through 2 weeks of April – but eventually, each person had done 3 or
more vivid paintings, and we finally had our array of art ready. The work was arranged
in the Telangana State Art Gallery, and two eminent artists, i.e., Mr. G. Paul and P.Mahesh
had come to inaugurate it themselves. What followed was a deeper analyzation of each
piece of work, constructive criticism, and of course, compliments.
Parents, teachers and even a few students came to witness the alluring drawings, and all
of them were nothing but praise. It was a great learning experience for all of us involved,
and others too. Being able to express through art is a magical and surreal gift, and the
way it was exhibited could make (and did make) everyone feel it.

“The living owe it to those who no longer can speak to tell their story for them” – Czeslaw
Milosz
We as the next generation need to carry out the rich culture and heritage passed on to us
from our ancestors. Living in this city of Hyderabad we realize the importance of its 500
years legacy.
As a school we made an effort to respect the rich culture and heritage of our city. It
blossomed the emergence of yet another idea after the opera in 2011 to present our
gratitude towards our city. A grand and explicit show was performed by the senior wing
of the school. It was performed twice in the “Center For Cultural Resources and Training”
by two batches of students- 7& 8 grades; 9 to 12 grades.
Our show , showcased to the guests the grandeur of the QutubShahis and the Nizams.
Their efforts to make Hyderabad what it is today, the strong monuments that stand tall
today & the scientific reasons behind building such outstanding structures had fascinated
each and every acorn of the school.
How the walls of the city of Golconda had its own hidden secrets that you wouldn’t
know unless you were accompanied by a guide, this opera had helped us take a virtual
tour of the forts, the tombs, the havelis, their riches and royalty.

26 Milestones 2015 Issue 1

The QutubShahi kings telling their stories, under the canopy of stars amongst a group of Creative Prowess
villagers reciting tales of the Nizam dynasty had created massive confidence building,
knowledge gaining and breath taking experience to everyone who was a part of the
show.
How do the monuments stand tall even today? How did people build such tall structures
back then, without cranes and electronic machines? Sans technology people were great
thinkers, mathematicians and architects who could design many wonderful structures
with intricate designs that had a lot of scientific significance to it.
With Hyderabad having such rich heritage, culture and glory…how do we enlighten the
people of Hyderabad….and what better way than performing it as an opera…….
And this is what we as a school presented Virasat-e-Hyderabad.
Living in this great city we owe it to those who no longer can speak to tell their story.
As a school we have taken the responsibility of telling the stories of the Nizams and the
QutubShahis.
We built confidence and gained knowledge. It was done in two batches by the senior
wing of the school. Doing twoshows in the “Center for culture resources and training
“gave us an insight into realizing our true potential in acting, dance ,music, costume and
research too.
It was not just any ordinary show but a path for extraordinary learning. A new way of
learning our history, maths, science, social and language.

Also it focuses on…..

Trust building: Peace and social cohesion through trust and reconciliation

Ethical Leadership: Developing a leadership culture based on moral integrity, compassion

Ten of us from the leadership team had the opportunity to attend a workshop on Education
Today Society Tomorrow [ETST] at IofC in May 2015.

The ETST workshops aim at value education which will lead to the formation of an
ethical society tomorrow. It works towards bringing the passion back into the teaching
profession by initiating positive changes in the way an individual thinks, learns and
interacts, leading to holistic improvement in the educational scenario in India and the
world. The workshop addressed all the relevant domains of teachers being as a person,
as a facilitator, as an administrator and as a changemaker.

The serenity and tranquility of the place, the initiatives taken by the organization, the
culture and clarity has given all of us an excellent life time memorable experience. We
understood that as educators the onus responsibility lies on our shoulders in shaping a
child’s personality as a person’s formative years are spent in the school which is a sacred
place to shape one’s attitudes and values. As teachers it is also our moral duty to create a
sustainable, respectful and peaceful society.

Drawing inspiration from this workshop the school has hosted a Round Table Conference
on 5th August for Principals of Schools to discuss on Reinventing Schools Rebuilding
the World.

underprivileged. Each student collects and saves money in a pot and gets it to school. The
money is then counted and donated to RDF.

Teachers Day Celebrated as Street Store Day: Spread the word Community Service
to Hang Up and Help Out

On the occasion of Teachers Day,Silver Oaks –The School of Hyderabad hosted ‘Street
Store’ a pop up store concept where the needy come and pick up whatever they want on
an equal footing with the giver. Giving away in a manner that is dignified for the receiver
to receive. This was our approach of celebrating Teachers Day this year.
The Street Store has previously hosted editions in other cities across the world, including
Cape Town, Itajai, Sydney, Teresina, Chennai and Hyderabad among others. Founded
as recently as January 2014 by South-African citizens Max Pazak and Kayli Levitan, the
concept became open source when the two realized that homelessness is an unfortunate
situation not limited to just South-African cities. Now just about anyone can host their
own street store anywhere in the world.
The one day event was held in front of the School premises and curated by the teachers
of Silver Oaks. Contributions for this event came from the teachers and students of
the School. The publicity for this event started ten days prior and the response was
overwhelming. The school was buzzing with the drive to donate, then sort and display
so that finally when the store is put up, it will be hassle free for the people to browse
through and “Shop”.
“To integrate in teaching and learning, the goals for conservation and social justice. To
develop civic virtues and emotional skills that can empower our acorns to be icons of
personal and social change who will play leading roles in the transition to a sustainable
future is the mission of our School . The idea of the Street Store appealed to us as it is
congruent with our ideology”, said the Principal of the School, Ms. Seetha Murty.
Teachers rolled up their sleeves and ensured that the day went on smoothly and that they
were able to put on a smile on and each and every one who visited the store today.

Community Service Road Safety Awareness Seminar

BEING SAFE IS BETTER THAN FEELING SORRY

Losing someone or something you love or care deeply about is very painful. “In Hyderabad
minimum 1 person dies in every 4 minutes”, said Dr. Srinivas. He is the secretary of
Telangana motor vehicle association and president of road safety foundation, we need to
be grateful that Dr. Srinivas visited our school and gave a lecture on how to improve road
safety. He explained that wearing helmets is the best practice to avoid accidents. In our
school this programme was held for all the bus drivers, cleaners, children and the team
at silver oaks attended it. His standard dialogue “SPEED THRILLS BUT KILLS” was
printed in his heart. It was an informative experience – a lot to learn, realize our mistakes,
promise ourselves to not commit them again and stay safe.

Intellectual Prowess Silver Oaks School - Academy of Thinkers

Best in PSA Problem Solving Assessment conducted by CBSE

Best in ASSET

Best in Olympiads in South of India

Best in CBSE Boards

Best in South Zone…. Conducted by the Times of India

28% of the students identified as ‘Gifted’ by the National Institute of Advanced
Studies

1st School in India to develop a science and math based exclusive program for gifted
children along with the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.

The essential strength of the school is to make learners ‘think’.

A core team of Silver Oaks is constantly leveraging their skills and abilities by undergoing
formal professional development programs and conducting research in pedagogy and
subject domains.

Silver Oaks is proud of this core team who can design transdisciplinary, interdisciplinary,
disciplinary curriculum with student centric methodology and a focus on critical thinking
skills.

An ideal school is responsible for creating learning programs for all kinds of learners.
• Our inclusive program educates all our students.
• Our differentiated program supports students with varying needs.
• And our exclusive program challenges the exceptional learners.

Last year, Silver Oaks Centre for Research and Design in Cognitive Learning developed
intensive courses in Math Science and English.

Acorns, who have taken up intensives, fared brilliantly in ASSET & Olympiads and also
School tests. Most of them are in national and international ranks of tests. Above all, this
is the clear evidence of empowering students with ‘critical thinking skills’.

Raising the bar and taking our acorns to new heights has been our consistent passion.
The Research Centre is constantly striving to find and create new ways to sharpen the
thinking skills in students.

This year, intensives acquired larger contours of subjects and skills. Courses have been
developed to encourage investigative learning in Math, Science and English.

It is perhaps the first of its kind in India, where a school developed an exclusive program
of learning to groom critical thinkers through subject domains.

IPad integration in Design Models Intellectual Prowess

Technology has taken a big leap in this 21st century; the same is true for Silver Oaks. In this
digital age, all that we can see around are gadgets. One such boon to this new era by Apple
is iPad, which fetched a revolutionary change in the teaching methodology. Educators
around the world are using iPad to build dynamic teaching-learning experiences. School
constantly introduces new initiatives which make the teaching – learning process more
innovative, explorative and productive.

Integration of iPad in design module made the teaching – learning process more
interactive. Exploration of Apps like I-cell, Cell Explorer, Chem-Crafter and Keynote
delivered a deeper understanding and reinforcement of the topics. Students explored
more interesting facts about Cellsby Apps like I-cell and Cell Explorer. They visualized
most explosive chemical reactions and various changes happening in chemicals while
mixing various chemicals which would have been impossible without iPad. Finally
submitting a formative assessment on iPad was like a dream come true for students.
It was very evident by the enthusiasm of students and teachers that visual representations
have helped the students to understand the concepts and gave them a big picture of the
topics. As a team of Grade VIII, we believe that executing this initiative of iPad integration
helped the students to hone the skills and channelize their thought process.
