FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
Grandparents’ Day
Grandparents’ Day will be held this Thursday 27 August. This is one of our biggest and
most looked forward to days in our School calendar each year. The timetable for the day
is set out below.
10:00am Arrival and morning tea will be served for grandparents on the verandah of
10:30am the hall.
11:15am Children will arrive at the hall to begin the brief concert and performance
part of the day.
Grandparents are invited to join the children in their classrooms and view
the work they have been doing.
If your child will be leaving with their grandparents following the activities, please let their
teacher know.
Art Showcase
The Art Showcase held on Friday night and Saturday was a wonderful success with
artworks from children across all grades, Design and Technology projects and Science
projects on display. This event certainly brought the creative and innovative talents of the
students of Calrossy Anglican School to the fore. I hope you had a chance to view the
showcase and the amazing work of our students. Congratulations must go to all who had
a hand in organising this event and to the students for their exceptional works.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6
Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

P and F
Many thanks to all who were able to attend the Primary P and F Auxiliary meeting last
week. The P and F have very generously donated funds for further playground upgrades
which will occur in the coming holidays. This will enhance an area of the playground that
has been, up until now, either a dust bowl, a mud patch or an area for khaki burr to grow,
and make it a much more usable space for children to enjoy. The P and F will be holding
a Fathers’ Day stall on Wednesday of next week, 2 September. Please see the reminder
further on in the newsletter for details.
HRIS Debating
A huge ‘Well Done’ to our two teams of debaters who travelled to St Phillips Christian
College last Thursday to take part in the HRIS Middle School Debating Day. Despite a
very early start the two teams won both their debates and were wonderful ambassadors
for our school. The children are to be applauded not only for their wonderful achievement
but also for the hours of work they put into preparing for the debates, giving up many
lunchtimes and hours of their own time in doing so. A big ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Robyn
Christmas for her work in assisting the teams and to Mrs Allum and Mrs Christmas for
accompanying the children on the day. A full report can be found further on in this
newsletter.
Da Vinci Decathlon
This Friday we have two teams going to Armidale to take part in the Northern Region
Da Vinci Decathlon. This is a competition developed by Knox Grammar School which
involves the children in ten disciplines: Mathematics and Chess, English, Science, Code
Breaking, Engineering Challenge, Philosophy, Creative Producer, Art and Poetry,
Cartography and General Knowledge. We are allowed a team of Year 5 students and a
team of Year 6 students each with eight members. Once again the children have shown a
desire and commitment to be part of these teams. They have worked hard over the last
few weeks during their own time to hone their skills of group work, creativity and
knowledge. We wish them well for their endeavours on Friday.
Friday Assembly
This Friday’s assembly, 28 August, will be a combined assembly for Infants and Primary
to celebrate Bookweek. The assembly will be held in the COLA, as the Hall is being used
for HSC marking, and begin at 9:00am.

Operation Christmas Child Appeal
Every shoebox gift is an opportunity to touch a child’s heart
with the love of Jesus Christ.” - Franklin Graham, International
President of Samaritan’s Purse
The 2015 Samaritan's Purse, Operation Christmas Child
Appeal is now underway. We thank you so much for your
amazing support last year and hope that once again, you will be
able to be a part of bringing joy and hope to children in some of
the most underprivileged countries in the world. A shoebox filled
with small toys, hygiene items, clothing or school supplies can be a tangible expression of
God's love to those most in need. If your family would like to be involved, children can
collect shoeboxes from Mrs Collins, along with guidelines about what can and cannot be
packed into them. Please read these guidelines very carefully before purchasing items for
your shoebox. All items should be new and removed from their packaging, before being
placed into the shoebox (to avoid large piles of rubbish in the recipients' town or village).
Boxes need to be returned to school before the end of W eek 1, Term 4. If you are able
to include the $9.00 postage and handling fee, per box, in a separate envelope, it would be
very much appreciated.
Thank you and God Bless
Leonie Collins

HRIS PRIMARY DEBATING COMPETITION
Last Thursday, we sent two teams to participate in the HRIS Debating competition at St
Phillip’s Christian College, Cessnock. All students from Year 5 had never been to a
debating completion before and were very enthusiastic to be part of the competition.
They were well prepared, spoke beautifully and debated so well that both teams won their
respective debates.
A big thankyou to Mrs Robyn Christmas, who worked with our debating teams and
prepared them so well for the competition day.

LIBRARY NEWS
Grandparents’ Day
This year we will be having a ‘Donation Table’ for people to purchase a book to be
donated to the Primary Library. Each book will have a label place in the front to
acknowledge the donation. All donated books will be greatly appreciated.
Book Week
The theme for this year is ‘Books Light Up Our World’. On Friday 28 August we will
be dressing up ‘To Light Up Our World’ – dressing in bright/colourful outfits to celebrate
Book Week. We hope that everyone will join in on this day by dressing up and bring a
gold coin donation. This year our gold coin donations will to ‘Make-A-Wish’ Australia,
an organisation that helps grant the wishes of children battling life threatening medical
conditions.

INSTALLATION OF FLASHING LIGHTS
Next week (Tuesday 1 September) the NSW Department of Roads and Maritime Services
has advised that it will be installing flashing school zone lights on Moore Creek Road
outside the campus of Calrossy Anglican School. Written correspondence follows:
Installation of flashing lights near Calrossy Anglican School (William Cowper
Campus)
The NSW Government has provided funding for the placement of school zone signs with
flashing lights at all schools by the end of this year to alert motorists of the 40km sp0eed
limit required during school drop off and pick up times.
Installing these flashing lights in schools zones has been shown to improve driver
awareness of the need to travel at a lower speed to ensure the safety of children and others
coming and going from the school area.
Roads and Maritime Services is delivering this safety initiative and plans to install signs
outside the campus of Calrossy Anglican School on Moore Creek Road the week
beginning Tuesday 1 September outside of 40km school zone hours. Work will take up
to two hours to complete, weather permitting.
Lights are installed on pre-existing poles or new poles are put in place if needed.
Primary Newsletter 7 25 August 2015
Partial lane closures may be in place while work is carried out to ensure safety of road
users and workers. There will be some noise associated with this work, but every effort
will be made to minimise these impacts.
For more information please visit the Centre for Road Safety website at
