Milestone Idea Card
‘I can learn to cross the road safely’
Social stories are a useful visual tool in explaining to
children the dangers of the road and why they should
take care.
On your next family walk, write down all the steps
involved in crossing the road safely, taking photos of the
boys as you go. Put the photos and key words together
and create a storybook which you can go back to,
developing those skills and take it out with you to use as
a visual when crossing the road.
You can also make a pretend road and set of traffic
lights at home, using some paper or cardboard and
practise this skill through role play.
You can also sing this nursery rhyme to
help them remember what to do when the traffic light is
green and what to do when it is red.
Twinkle twinkle traffic light
(sung to “Twinkle Little Star”)
Twinkle twinkle traffic light,
Standing on the corner bright.
When it’s green it’s time to go,
When it’s red its stop you know.
Twinkle twinkle traffic light,
Standing on the corner bright.
