Weekly Challenge - Potted Sports (1)

Weekly Challenge - Potted Sports (1)

This week would have been our annual ‘Early Years Potted Sports Day’, as we
are unable to participate in this experience together this week’s challenge is to

hold your own potted sports event with your family!

This involves setting up five stations and each family member can complete the
activity for 30 seconds, or a minute if they are up for a further challenge. Below

are suggested stations, however please feel free to create your own.

1. Using a spoon and either a pair of rolled up sock or an
egg if you are feeling brave. Set up 2 markers for each
person to walk/run between. Count how many times
each person goes between the 2 points within the
time limit.

2. Demonstrate to your child how to do a star jump.
After a quick practice shout GO and count how many
star jumps each family member can do in 30 seconds.

3. You will need a partner for this game. Place
yourselves a distance apart and then pass a ball to
each other. After practising you can shout GO and
count how many passes you get in 30 seconds.

4. Set up a line of objects i.e. plastic cups/bottles, putting
5 or 6 in a line. Let the child practise zigzagging in and
out of them. Shout GO and count how many times
each member can zig zag back and forth in 30 seconds.

5. Gather up to 10 cuddly toys or characters. Place an
empty box at other side of the room. Explain that the
activity is to pick up a toy and put it in the box and run
back. After a quick practise shout GO then see how
many toys they can get in the box in 30 seconds.

During and after the Potted Sports encourage and help your child/children to
record their totals. They could make a lovely bar chart to record each team
members score. This is a great way to use numeracy and mark making skills for

a purpose.

Celebrate your achievements together by having an awards ceremony
afterwards. Can you make a medal from cardboard and tin foil for each of the

team members?

Well done, you are all champions!
