The Breast Cancer Assistance Group of Monterey County (BCAG) is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization of breast cancer survivors who raise funds and awareness to improve the lives of local breast cancer patients and their families. Founded in 1997, the organization was started by four women with breast cancer who felt that Monterey County’s assistance to breast cancer patients could be improved and more thoughtfully conceived. Their drive and advocacy helped in the formation of the Breast Care Center with CHOMP in 2002; the development of a Patient Navigator Program and cancer support groups currently administered by the CHOMP Comprehensive Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society; and the Breast Cancer Assistance Group Endowment Fund with Montage Health Foundation. In its 26th year, BCAG provides financial assistance for breast cancer patients who are confronted with a loss of income and increased costs related to the diagnosis and treatment of the illness. BCAG provides basic living expenses grants (for food, housing, gas, utilities, childcare, etc.) to relieve some of the financial worry associated with breast cancer and the loss of income and allow women to focus more on their recovery rather than their financial burdens and uncertainties. BCAG wants to thank the Management, Staff, Members, and Guests of Carmel Valley Ranch for supporting Charity Day and making a difference in the lives of local women battling breast cancer. “I was completely overwhelmed when I found out I had breast cancer and that my surgery was going to cost $6,500. I’m a teacher so we don’t get state disability. BCAG’s financial support meant that I was able to pay my bills. The Breast Cancer Assistance Group (BCAG) has long maintained a strong partnership with the Food Bank for Monterey County. Over the past year, BCAG has worked with the Food Bank to provide over 300 months of food to local breast cancer patients and their families. Through BCAG, breast cancer patients can apply for food assistance and receive food specifically selected to address the unique nutritional needs of patients in treatment or recovery. Food is picked up monthly and includes healthful items, especially fresh produce, that limited budgets cannot accommodate. This program, funded by a private donor, addresses the critical problem of food insecurity. The partnership between BCAG and the Food Bank helps relieve patients’ burdens of worry about the when’s, what’s, and if’s of their next meals, so they can focus on treatment and recovery. Eligible women can sign up for this program through the Breast Cancer Assistance Group of Monterey County, which provides support and assistance to women undergoing treatment or recovery from breast cancer. 9:00 am Closest to the Pin!
