Mercury or Good King Henry
sometimes known as Poor Man’s Asparagus
1. We find it preferable to sow the seed in a box under glass. A heated greenhouse is not necessary, but does give
quicker germination. Use John Innes or similar type compost.
2. As soon as the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into boxes, spacing the seedlings out at two inches
apart in both directions.
3. When the plants are two or three inches high, harden off ready to plant into their permanent quarters.
4. When the plants have been hardened off, this will be April/May, plant into good deep cool soil enriched with plenty of
humus, 15 inches from plant to plant and 30 inches from row to row.
5. Mercury is a dual vegetable. Its large leaves can be gathered throughout the late summer and cooked in a similar
manner to summer spinach. The leaves are said by old country folk to be rich in iron and good for the blood.
6. It is the young shoots as they appear above the ground in spring which country folk gather and cook in a similar
manner to asparagus. Many of the older country folk, particularly in the Eastern Counties, prefer it to Asparagus.
7. Once a bed of Mercury is established it will last for many years, but it does benefit from liquid feeds in the early spring
and summer months. We use Bio Plant Food.
8. Note – seed sown one year will not produce shoots to eat until the following year, the leaves can be eaten the same
year as sowing.

Garden Gossip 2016
Dear Gardening Friends,
I am sitting down to write this just after my birthday. It amazes me where the years have gone, as my date of birth
is right at the start of the Battle of Britain, 11th July 1940, and like so many others we have to thank and remember
the men and women who took up arms in those difficult times. With many paying the ultimate sacrifice.
My mother always informed me that the night I was born black clouds gathered, resulting in tremendous storms
with torrential rain. In some ways I suppose setting the sad scene for the next 5/6 years.
This has caused me to take the family photograph albums out of the book cases. Looking for members of the
family who served in the Second World War, revealing old sepia photographs of Uncle Son, Uncle Jack, Uncle Rufus
and Uncle Ashley. Also my father Sydney Morley and his sister Katherine.
Thankfully they all came home after long periods away from their roots. But you wonder what effect this had on
their minds and outlook.
However, out of every cloud there is a silver lining, as related in the family photographs. Aunt Kath joined the
WRENS and dressed in her uniform, peers out from under a floppy hat, the name on it, believe it or not is HMS
Peregrin. While her brother, my father, went into the Army, his Unit being the 207th HAR Regiment. Both of them
being posted down to the south coast, where my father befriended a Cornishman in the Navy, Ashley Penberth from
Feock. One night in Plymouth Aunt Kath was introduced to Ashley; romance blossomed.
Pausing, I look at their marriage photograph taken in grandfather Morley's garden, 1943. I attended at 2/3 years
old, cannot remember a thing. However, four proud parents standing with five smiling uniformed Navel Ratings
reflect an optimism that took them through the War.
After the War, Uncle Ashley returned to Feock with Katherine, where they spent the rest of their lives, raising
two children, Pat and Mike. He worked locally, became a Councillor and Church Warden. Always loved telling the
War-time tale about Aunt Kath when the order was given in the board room to splice the main brace. She refused to
serve the Officers with alcohol, being a teetotaller.
So from just after the War until now I have spent many a happy hour in Cornwall, either with my Aunt and Uncle or
Pat who has moved into Truro. Whereas Mike is situated in the next village to us, Soham. I think it was the drawing
power of my father's homemade wine that brought Mike back to this area!
This brings me on to an article in the Daily Telegraph by Talib Choudray – Take a Walk in Britain's Secret Walled
Gardens. Well, having worked in one and being well tutored by both my grandfathers in the art of Victorian gardening
methods, this interested me.
So my mind walked back in time and I thought how fortunate I have been, meeting, working and gaining practical
knowledge from so many people. From a young age working in our gardens growing and selling vegetables, flowers
and fruit, in the family seed business, local nurseries and on the farms.
Jack Lilly, for example, in the 1950's, Head Gardener at Trelissick on the Falmouth Estuary in Cornwall. I can still
see the delight on Aunt Kath's face when he gave her some rooted cuttings, he being a friend of Uncle Ashley, also a
past pupil at Feock School.
Working for Mr Budgie Moller in his private walled garden under Mr Edward Raines and Freddy Lister with seven
other gardeners at White Lodge Stud in the 1960's. Also going up to 41 Hill Street in Berkeley Square to look after
the roof garden. The stud is now owned by Sheikh Mohammed but the walled garden and surroundings have not
changed as I drop in to see Chris, Paul or Jack every so often.
Helping Jennifer Davies and Harry Dodson with the formation of the BBC television series The Victorian Kitchen
Garden at Chilton Foliat.
As you can see I have a love of growing and gardens. If, I may suggest, you get the opportunity, do visit the
following gardens in East Anglia.
They are:- Helmingham Hall, Chippenham Park Estate, Fullers Mill at West Stow, Cambridge Botanical Gardens,
Audley End House, Anglesey Abbey and Kirtling Tower which is near Newmarket. Most interesting, dates from the
1500's, only open end June/July on a Sunday, which we visited only the other weekend and picked up a leaflet
J. W. BOYCE, SEEDSMEN, FORDHAM, Ely, Cambs. CB7 5JU 15
regarding Elizabeth I's stay in 1578 for 3 days. And the list of food provided, which was quite diverse and enormous
quantities:- 5000 loaves of bread, 4750 gallons of beer and wine, 145 cattle, sheep and pigs, 25 different types of
wild birds which included swans, cranes, herons, bitterns, pewits, godwits, gulls, dottrels, knots, stints, redshank,
quails, curlews, the total amount being 4346 birds. 20 stags and bucks, 221 cows tongues, feet and udders, 2500
eggs, 96 crayfish, 1 cart load and 2 horse loads of oysters.
What a feast, the very though of all that food is making me ill. Must finish now and go out walking.
Wishing you all good health and a prosperous year.
Best wishes and kind regards, Roger Morley

PANSY – The Surprise Mixture
I can honestly say that this mixture of large flowered pansies is known and grown not only in Great Britain but in many countries
far beyond the sea. A few years ago a well known gardening correspondent in the national gardening press described it as one of
the best mixtures in Europe today. Judging by all the awards it has won I think that there is now ample evidence to confirm this
statement. I like pansies and it has taken five generations in the family to perfect this Surprise mixture and we will continue to strive
to improve it and with the knowledge and experience which has been handed down I am confident that I can achieve this and the
mixture will continue to give great pleasure all over the world. As one of our customers wrote in all seriousness to tell us that the
pansies were so good that even the cat admired them. Yes, they really are eyestoppers!

The Easy Way to Grow Pansies
1. Use compost pressed lightly into a seed tray making sure the surface is level.
2. Sow the seed onto the surface of the soil and cover the seed with a fine layer of soil – this is important.
3. Have a bath of water ready and place the seed tray in the water until you can see that the soil is moist.
4. Place in a shaded place keeping moist at all times. Do not let sunlight onto the trays and keep temperature
below 22°C – this is very important.
5. Within 2/3 weeks germination will have taken place.
6. Prick out the seedlings into pots or trays keeping them moist at all times.
7. Plant out into their permanent beds in the garden when large enough.
8. Sowing times – December to February for Summer flowering the same year. A little heat is required for
germination. June to August for flowering the following year. No heat is required for germination.

POLYANTHUS
The Triumph Mixture
I do sincerely recommend this variety to you. It has been bred to produce very large flowers, as large as the American and New
Zealand varieties. The flowers are borne on long stiff stalks making it a good garden plant or one suitable for growing for cut-
flower production. Numerous growers have commented on the wonderful colour range. Reds, yellows, pinks, oranges, apricots,
a multitude of pastel shades and even a blue in this mixture. Polyanthus flower in the spring and early summer and I think that at
that time of the year we all need something bright and cheerful to make us happy and full of joysome spirit. It has been bred in the
cold windswept East Anglian Fens and will certainly stand up to the wet cold English winters out of doors unprotected very much
better than most of the imported strains.

OLD FASHIONED SCENTED SWEET PEAS
The old fashioned strongly scented sweet peas which were so popular in great grandfather’s day have been rescued from obscurity
and we hope preserved for our grandchildren and great grandchildren to sniff, smell, and say please let me smell again, they really
are lovely.
These are the sweet peas which were grown before the present large flowers ‘Spencer varieties’ became so popular because of their
size. If you have the space please do try them, they will give so much pleasure. The size of the flower is nothing to shout about but
the perfume on a summer’s evening, particularly after a shower of rain when a rainbow is in the sky is truly something to shout about,
but there will be no need to shout, the whole street will be putting their noses over your garden fence to have a sniff. Romance will
be in the air again. Middle-aged couples, couples young in heart who have celebrated their golden wedding, and teenagers on their
way home from the youth club will all be there sniffing in the perfume of your special sweet peas.

Suggestions for growing bedding plants, tomatoes and other half-hardy annuals
1. When to sow
a. Heated Greenhouse with minimum night temperature of 50°F.................................................February
b. Cool Greenhouse or Frame...........................................................................................................March
c. Cloches......................................................................................................................... March and April
d. Out of Doors.....................................................................................................................April and May
This last sowing will give plants for the late summer and early autumn display.
2. What to sow in
Many gardeners now use the well known John Innes Composts, which undoubtedly if correctly made according
to the formula, and method, laid down by The John Innes Institute, are ideal for the purpose for which they were
intended. It must be stressed that the John Innes Composts must be in good condition when used, far too often
the samples on sale in the shops are too old, and too dry, for the purpose for which they were intended, and one
might add they are often far too expensive.
Numerous highly successful gardeners still prefer a good medium loam, virgin well rotted turf is ideal, but any good
garden loam will do. This can be mixed with some vermiculite to retain the moisture. Others prefer, particularly the
older generation of gardeners, the traditional mixture of loam, horticultural peat and sand. This mixture can retain
the moisture, and yet remain porous.
3. Depth of sowing
The seeds will need covering with a layer of fine compost, this should only be as deep as the seeds are thick. This
will mean a very fine layer to cover small seeds, and a thicker layer to cover the larger seeds. The very tiny fine
seeds are not covered at all, but anchored in position with a very light dusting of compost, or horticultural sand.
Builders sand is not suitable for horticultural work.
4. Water
Water with air warmed water, never use cold water straight from the tap, as this may chill delicate seedlings and
kill them. Always use a fine rose watering can for this purpose, handle with care. Always ensure that the boxes or
seed pans are standing level, this will help to avoid washing all the seeds into one corner of the box. Care must be
taken not to over water, as this will quickly cause loss of seedlings from ‘damping off’ disease.
5. Air
Make sure that the air in the greenhouse, or frame, is changed every day. This can be done by opening the ventilators
for a short period each day. Seedlings need fresh air as much as human beings to keep healthy. They also dislike
draughts. This regular changing of the air is very important in the prevention of ‘damping off’ disease.
6. Pricking out
As soon as the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into seed trays spacing them at one inch intervals in
all directions. Early pricking out produces sturdy plants, with a good fibrous root system, and ones that will move
with the minimum of check when transplanting time comes.
7. Hardening off
As the time approaches for transplanting the plants into their flowering quarters they should be gradually hardened
off. It is unwise to take plants from a heated greenhouse, and plant them out immediately in the garden. They
should be first placed in a cold house, or frame, and then in a sheltered place in the garden to get acclimatized to
the outdoor conditions before transplanting them into their permanent quarters.
8. Transplanting
Do not transplant out into the permanent quarters until the risk of serious frost is over. Try to avoid giving the plant
a check at transplanting time. Steady continuous growth is the key to success. Avoid all unnecessary damage to
the plant roots when moving them, it is preferable to use a trowel when planting out, and do make a hole large
enough to accommodate the roots. Young plants must be put in the soil firmly so that they can continue to grow
without a check.
9. Feeding
What should one use? In my opinion there is only one answer, use P.B.I. Bio Plant Food regularly in accordance
with the maker’s instructions. This is the secret behind many commercial grower’s success.

10. Common causes of failure
1. Soil too dry at sowing time.
2. Seed sown too deeply.
3. Too much cold water used for watering.
4. Night temperature too low.
5. Day temperature too high.
6. Seed pans or boxes exposed to direct rays of the sun, always shade at the germinating stage.
7. Soil allowed to dry out after sowing.
8. Soil contains too much fertilizer.
9. Lack of fresh air.
10. Soil pressed down too tightly after sowing, thereby often damaging the delicate seeds.
11. Chemical soil sterilizers used incorrectly.
12. Unsuitable compost materials.
To obtain a good display, do mass the various groups together, use enough plants in a group, odd plants dotted
here, there and everywhere will never produce a brilliant patch of colour, and make your garden the envy of all the
neighbours.
