Inviting all generations into a growing life with Jesus Christ

The Gathering

CALL TO WORSHIP Hebrews 4:16, †CEB

16 Finally, let’s draw near to the throne of favor with confidence
so that we can receive mercy and find grace when we need help.

OPENING SONG
Hymn 326 For All the Saints (verses 1-3)

For all the saints who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle; they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Confession

CALL TO CONFESSION Pastor Tassie Green

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Father, we long to live according to your will and your ways.
As hard as we may try, we stumble and fall.
We trip over the broken pieces of our lives.
Despite our best intentions, we are not immune to sin.
Lord, hear our prayers as we ask for your forgiveness.
Help us to receive your grace anew.
Like a fountain, may your grace wash over our lives,
that we may be restored to faithfully follow Jesus,
in whose name we pray.

Please continue in silent prayer for confession of personal matters.

The Word

WORD IN SONG The Lord’s Prayer
by Albert Hay Malotte

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation;
But deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
Amen.

CLOSING SONG
Hymn 326 For All the Saints (verses 4-5)

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Sermon Series: Worst Year Ever

2020 has not treated us well. It’s been a terrible
year, but what do we have to be thankful for?
This series explores what we as Christians can be
grateful for, even in hard circumstances, pointing
to the hope we have in Christ while acknowledging
the real and hard things we have experienced.

November 1 – Fall and Grace
November 8 – Suffering and Sanctification
November 15 – Perseverance and Praise

Communion Today

In preparation for receiving communion, we encourage you to gather your favorite bread
and a small cup of juice or wine in advance of the 10:00 a.m. livestream start time. In the
event that you are unable to collect your own elements, just participate as you are able.

For 2021, our generosity campaign theme
is Thanks-Giving. As we make our giving
commitments for the coming year, we do so
with gratitude for God’s provision. The truth is…
gratitude precedes generosity. See what Psalm
107:21-22 says: “Let them give thanks to the
Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful
deeds for humankind. Let them sacrifice thank
offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.” For the Psalmist, gratitude inspires our giving.

In thanks-giving to God, you are invited to make a “thank offering” commitment for 2021. Your financial
pledge makes possible inspiring worship, inclusive programs, and impactful mission for our church and
community.

On Gratitude Sunday, November 15, we will dedicate our commitments to God for 2021.

Ahead of that Sunday, you are invited to:
1. Pray for the vision of First Pres and that God would bless us with the resources we need to fulfill
our mission of inviting all generations into a growing life with Jesus Christ.
2. Pray for how you may respond by making a financial pledge to support the ministries and
community outreach of our church for 2021.
3. Fill out a Generosity Card and return it by mail or in person. You can also fill out an online
commitment form at firstpreswheaton.org/Generosity2021.

Your gift will make an eternal contribution to God’s kingdom, as we support the church and community
through our vital ministries. Whether you have set up recurring giving or give regularly by another
method, thank you for your generosity and thanks-giving.

Updates from the Mission Committee! MissionFirst Pres
Abundant Compassion
Our current environment with Covid-19 has turned many things upside down,
but the need to support our Mission partners continues more than ever. Our
plan, with your continued giving, is to fully support our partners financially as
planned at the beginning of this year. Our hands-on engagement with those in
need has changed with Covid-19, but nothing can stop our desire to serve if
we put our hearts and commitment into it.

As the 51st year of Christmas Sharing begins, we pray you can open
your hearts by taking a small step towards ending systemic poverty.
First Pres and other area churches will be supplying food purchased
from the NIFB and purchasing Walmart gift cards for each family in
the program. No used goods will be accepted this year.

Our congregation has demonstrated how strong we are by helping
those less fortunate in our community. Please help by donating
necessary funds or volunteering on Saturday, December 12 from
8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. There are 15 volunteer slots open.

Please visit firstpreswheaton.org/onlinegiving or mail a check to
First Pres Wheaton with Christmas Sharing in the memo. Your
generosity is a gift to the families in our own community! Email
Sharon Carroll at [email protected] to volunteer.

The last date to make a financial donation to
Christmas Sharing is Friday, November 27.

DuPage Pads

Tuesdays, November 10 and December 8 from 4:00-5:30 p.m.

First Pres is providing meals to 55-65 guests at the Red Roof Inn, 1698 W. Diehl Rd,
Naperville, on November 10 and December 8. We need up to eight volunteers on
site at the hotel. Meals can be frozen grocer or restaurant prepared dinner meals (including caterers or
other licensed food providers). Guests have microwaves in their rooms.

Since the pandemic began, PADS has been housing guests in three local hotels. With up to 115 emergency
hotel rooms, and a need to provide nutritious meals for up to 150 families and individuals experiencing
homelessness, this is an incredible opportunity for us to serve with our mission partner!

If you would like to contribute, you can send a check to the church office with PADS in the memo, or donate
online at firstpreswheaton.org/onlinegiving. If you, your family or small group would like to sign up for on-site
room deliveries, please email [email protected] or phone 630-251-1955.
