January 31, 2021 Worship Guide

January 31, 2021

10:00 a.m. Worship

Inviting all generations into a growing life with Jesus Christ

The Gathering

CALL TO WORSHIP Romans 8:26, CEB

26 In the same way, the Spirit comes to help our weakness. We don’t know what we
should pray, but the Spirit himself pleads our case with unexpressed groans.

Thank him! Bless his name!
OPENING SONG
Hymn 336 We Gather Together

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
he chastens and hastens his will to make known;
the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to his name; he forgets not his own.

Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine;
so from the beginning the fight we were winning;
thou, Lord, wast at our side; all glory be thine!

We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant,
and pray that thou still our defender wilt be.
Let thy congregation escape tribulation;
thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!

The Confession

CALL TO CONFESSION Pastor Tassie Green

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we confess that we can be
caught up in the brokenness of our world.
As good as we try to be, we can so easily dismiss
the holy conviction of the Holy Spirit.
Purify our hearts anew today.
Lead us into greater alignment with you, each and every hour.
Teach us not to be perfect, but faithful followers of Jesus,
through whom we pray.

Please continue in silent prayer for confession of personal matters.

DECLARATION OF GOD’S PARDON

The Word

WORD IN SONG “A Simple Song” (from Mass)
by Leonard Bernstien & Stephen Schwartz

Sing God a simple song
Lauda laude
Make it up, as you go along
Lauda laude
Sing, like you like to sing
God loves all simple things
For God, is the simplest of all

I will sing the Lord a new song
To praise him, to bless
him, to bless the Lord
I will sing his praises, while I live
All of my days

Blessed is the man who loves the lord
Blessed is the man who praises him
Lauda lauda laude
And walks in his way

I will lift up my eyes
To the hills from whence comes my help
I will lift my voice to the Lord
Singing lauda laude

For the lord, is my shade
Is the shade upon my right hand
And the sun shall not smite me by day
For the Lord my knight
Blessed is the man who loves the Lord
Lauda lauda laude
And walks in his name

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Pastor Tassie Green

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Sending

CLOSING SONG
Hymn 295 Go to the World!

Go to the world! Go into all the earth.
Go preach the cross where Christ renews life’s worth,
baptizing as the sign of our rebirth.
Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go into every place.
Go live the word of God’s redeeming grace.
Go seek God’s presence in each time and space.
Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go struggle, bless, and pray;
the nights of tears give way to joyous day.
As servant church, you follow Christ’s own way.
Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go as the ones I send,
for I am with you till the age shall end,
when all the hosts of glory cry “Amen!”
Alleluia. Alleluia.

BLESSING Pastor Kellen Smith

Please stay for our annual congregational meeting following the worship service.

CHURCH LIFE

This Morning – Ordinary Expansion

Acts 8:26–40, CEB

10:00 a.m. Livestream at:

firstpreswheaton.org/livestream
God’s kingdom begins to spread from Jerusalem
into Samaria and Judea as the church continues to
be witnesses of Jesus. The kingdom advances not by
extraordinarily gifted and talented people, but by
ordinary people who follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Sermon Series – To the Ends of the Earth: The Book of Acts

This six-week series examines the remarkable spread of the church and the kingdom of God from
Jerusalem, to Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Jesus has commissioned every one
of his followers to be his witness by the power of the Holy Spirit. Despite challenges from outside
and within, the kingdom of God continues to advance. Today, we are his witnesses and have a vital
role in the continuing story of Jesus’ unstoppable kingdom.

Good news!
