Give Me a Clean Heart
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, giver of blessings, we thank you for the mercies we know, and ask your
forgiveness when we fail to acknowledge you as the source of all we have.
When we hoard your gifts,
When we say, “that’s mine,”
When we ignore the bounty around us,
When we are blind to the good,
Forgive us. Help us to share, to see, to live gratefully.
Through Christ we pray.
Please continue in silent prayer for confession of personal matters.
D ECLARATION OF GOD’S PARDON
Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

Give Me a Clean Heart by Margaret P. Douroux
Give me a clean heart so I may serve Thee.
Lord, fix my heart so that I may be used by Thee.
For I’m not worthy of all these blessings.
Give me a clean heart, and I’ll follow Thee.

MUSICAL OFFERING Lord, Make Me An Instrument Lyrics attr. St. Francis of Assisi
Music by M. Roger Holland, II
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it’s in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it’s in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

CHURCH LIFE
October 16, 2022
– OWN THE VISION – Livestream at 10:30 a.m. – firstpreswheaton.org/livestream
“Encouraged To Be Generous”
2 Corinthians 8:1-9
This series accompanies the church’s fall
generosity campaign. It will help us understand
Jesus’ mission for the local church and the
importance of stewarding our time, talents and
resources. “Own the Vision” is about doing just
that – owning the vision that God has given us
for our community and the world.
SUNDAY In our time together over the last six months, our students have learned about
what it means to follow Christ and how to live that out every day. They also
learned about what it looks like to be members of our faith community, and how
special that can truly be. Our confirmation class this year is a very special group
of students, who will each bring their own unique God-given gifts to this church.
We ask that you pray for these students as they continue in their journey of faith, and that they would
know and feel the wonderful and powerful love of God in their life. Also pray that they would feel welcome
into their new membership here at First Pres.

Generosity Campaign filled with hope. – Jeremiah 29:11
The theme for our 2023 Generosity Campaign is Own the Vision. Own the Vision invites us to change
our perspectives as owners, stakeholders, and investors in the impactful ministry that is made possible
because of your generosity. You are invited to prayerfully consider how you will steward the resources
the Lord has blessed you with and use them to invest in building his kingdom through the ministries of
First Pres Wheaton. You are an owner in God’s kingdom and have an important role to play!
Commitment cards are available in the sanctuary and will also be sent by mail. Commitment cards can
be submitted online at firstpreswheaton.org/Generosity2023 or to the church office.
Commitment Sunday – On Sunday, October 30, which is Reformation Sunday, we will also celebrate
Commitment Sunday and make our giving commitments to God during worship.

Biblical Migration:
Our Migrant Roots in Scripture
Sundays at 10:30 a.m.
Today, October 16 – November 13
Led by Dr. Ted Hiebert
and Dr. Greg Anderson
In this series we will study the Bible’s oldest
migration narratives, in particular the stories
of Israel’s ancestors in the Book of Genesis.
Our aim is to understand the experience of immigration in the Bible and to think about how biblical
perspectives on immigration might influence our experience and views of it today. For this series we
welcome back Dr. Ted Hiebert, Professor Emeritus at McCormick Theological Seminary, and our
Parish Associate, Dr. Greg Anderson, who also serves as Graduate School Chaplain at Wheaton College.
TODAY: Global Christianity is Migrating South – Dr. Greg Anderson
By 2050 it is estimated that 77 percent of all Christians will live in the Global South. What are the
implications of this shift? We will discuss the ongoing migration of Christianity and its global impact.
