MATs The US Senate passed H. R. 6, the Support for
Patients and Communities Act. The bill, which is
a final product of a compromise between a
House-passed package of opioid bills and a
differing Senate version, is headed to the
President for his signature. The vote in the
Senate was 98-1, with only Senator Mike Lee (R –
UT) opposing the bill and Senator Ted Cruz (R-
TX) not voting.
One of the major provisions of the bill is a section
that would allow CRNAs and other advanced
practice registered nurses (APRNs) to obtain a
waiver from the DEA to prescribe medication-
assisted treatments (MATs), such as
buprenorphine. (5 year pilot program)
