Children’s Mercy Hospital

• Clinic started by parents of a child with DS-
Established in 1989 – Larry and June Rouse

• Focus on providing clinical care and resources
for children with DS

• Clinic once or twice a month

Now Excellence Clinical Care

• DSC program in the State of Kansas and around MO –
clinic is in St Louis

• Each patient with DS syndrome seen in a
multidisciplinary setting

• Clinics held two days a week – Wednesdays at Adele
campus and Fridays at Children’s Mercy South

Excellence in Education

• Fellows - Behavior and Developmental Specialist – 1 month learning to take care of
patients with DS

• Residents - Weekly hands-on learning session in DSC
• Medical Students - Weekly hands-on learning sessions in DSC. Overview of Down

Syndrome to more than 200 medical students by and adult, a parent and a
Physician.

recognized

• Delay in Diagnosis

• Current arthritis treatment options are
poorly tolerated in patients with DS

• The clinical challenges we face in this population of children
have spurred our translation approach to studying Down
Syndrome Arthopathy at CMH with the ultimate goal of early
detection as well as safe and effective treatment options to
optimize outcomes in patient with DS

• Dr. Jordon Jones and Dr. Ryan Funk will present the strategies
to improve early detection and safe treatment options
