“Excellence and Promotion of Achievement: the Key to Success”
Greetings from the
Immediate Past
National President
It is with a grateful heart to greet each of you, the National
Body of the National Women of Achievement, Incorporated,
and extend my best wishes to our National President, Achiever
Jodie Jenkins Oliphant, who has worked assiduously in the area
of leadership and her efforts are worthy to be recorded in the
NWOA history – “The Key.”
The Key is the tool that NWOA uses to capture our history of the many activities, events,
accomplishments, programs, and projects that chapters and regions provided in the vari-
ous communities across the United States. The NWOA history speaks volume that reflects
the purpose of our organization that was founded upon the idea to give service to women
and youth. The legacy that our sojourners started – a work to reshape our communities,
mold our youth, unify and promote excellent women, provide meaningful impact of service
to those who need us the most – is our history. Let us take pride in showcasing and telling
the NWOA story in our National Organ – The Key.
Accolades to Achiever Anne Harris, the editor of the Key, who has done an excellent job
these two years, 2015-2017, documenting and highlighting our history by website and this
publication, CON-WOA 2017 – “The Key.”

can to receive a doctorate degree from Texas Tech University. Most of her
career was spent at Texas Southern University (TSU), starting as an instruc-
tor of home economics in 1951. However, she was soon assigned to more
progressive positions, including facilities planning director, assistant to the
dean of faculties, and director of the Urban Resources Center. Achiever Dixon
was the first woman in the history of Texas Southern University to become a
vice-president when she was named vice-president for Urban Programming in
1974. In 1975 she took a brief leave of absence from TSU to become execu-
tive assistant to Houston Mayor Fred Hofheinz. In 1980, she was appointed

the Harris County Criminal Court, where she won election by defeating seven white
male opponents. In 1977, she was appointed by the Governor of Texas to the
80th Civil District Court, becoming the first black to sit on a civil district court.
Although she and all the Black Judges in the State of Texas suffered defeat under
the Ronald Regan election, she received the largest amount of Democratic votes
