FIRST OF ALL, IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE FOR ME TO PEN MY THOUGHTS AS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF OUR LEO CLUB FOR THE LAST NEWSLETTER FOR THIS LEOISTIC YEAR. LOOKING BACK AT THE PATH I CAME FROM BEING JUST A MEMBER TO THE VICE PRESIDENT, I SEE A HUGE IMPROVEMENT IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS. LEOISM IS ALWAYS CLOSE TO MY HEART DUE TO MANY REASONS, MAINLY I ENJOY THE SATISFACTION I GAIN WHENEVER I ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN SOCIAL WORK. IDENTIFYING THE NEEDFUL COMMUNITIES AND REACHING THEM IN DIFFERENT WAYS HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MAIN GOALS OF OUR CLUB. I THINK WITHIN THIS YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO ACHIEVE OUR GOALS WITH THE HELP AND SUPPORT OF MANY HARD-WORKING AND DEDICATED LEOS. THE TWO YEARS I SPENT AS A UOCFOS LEO WAS A PERIOD I COLLECTED THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES IN MY UNI DIARIES. EVERY SINGLE PROJECT WE'VE DONE UP TO NOW WAS WORTHY TO SHARE SO THAT OTHERS CAN GET INSPIRED TOO. THE ACHIEVEMENTS AND THE SUCCESS OF OUR PROJECTS ARE THE RESULTS OF TEAMWORK AND HARMONY WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY. WE ALWAYS BELIEVE TOGETHER WE ARE LIMITLESS AND POWERFUL. AS A NEW LEOISTIC YEAR IS ON THE BAY, I WOULD LIKE TO ADD MY BEST WISHES TO ALL THE LEOS FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR TO MAKE IT A SUCCESS. ALSO LOOKING BACK I CAN SAY THAT SIGNING OFF AS THE VICE PRESIDENT IS SOMETHING I CAN DO WITHOUT ANY REGRETS THANKS TO ALL MY LEOS, WHO CONTRIBUTED TO MAKING THIS YEAR A MESMERIZING ONE. FOR ME, OUR LEO CLUB IS THE PLACE WHERE I IDENTIFIED MY TRUE POTENTIAL AND THE INNER STRENGTH OF MY PERSONALITY. LEO IS A GOLDEN GATE THAT IS OPEN FOR ANYONE WILLING TO DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS, SOCIALIZE WITH DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES, GAIN PROPER ORGANIZING EXPERIENCES, AND BE CREATIVE WITH NOVEL IDEAS. I SHOULD MENTION THAT LEOISM IS NOT JUST ABOUT DOING PROJECTS, BUT ALSO IT’LL BRING YOU MANY CHALLENGES, FROM WHICH YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR DECISION-MAKING SKILLS AND LEADERSHIP QUALITIES. WORKING WITH SOME OF THE MOST HARD-WORKING PEOPLE AND GETTING INSPIRED BY THEM WAS ALSO EXPERIENCED BY ME THROUGHOUT MY JOURNEY. Leoism, taken as a whole, is all about creating a better community and a better world while gaining opportunities, experiences, and various skills which will make them thrive into great leaders. The “3rd Orientation 22.23” was held on 27th of January 2023 from 7.00 pm onwards virtually, through the Zoom platform along with the general meeting for the month of January. The chief guest of the day was Leo Malinfa Ganewatte, Multiple District Treasurer, Leo Multiple District 306 and the guest of honor was Leo Kumuthu Paramee, Deputy Head Of Operations Team, Leo Multiple District 306, and also the District Assistant Treasurer, Leo District 306 A1. The main objective of the orientation was to give insights into the Leo journey that members will be walking through and realize club goals, how the club works, and their responsibilities towards it. Also, the speeches delivered by the Chief guest and the Guest of Honor gave a deep understanding and a wide idea of the benefits of being a Leo, and especially how to balance club work along with academic and other work. This was really valuable for all participating Leos as all were university students. The organizing committee also played a mesmerizing video of all the projects done up to that date which was a refreshing look back and inspired young Leos of the club to do more such beautiful projects in the upcoming months. All the participants had a whale of a time while educating the Leo prospects of our club. We hope the Leo journey they started will lead them to be the best of humans and greatest of leaders enhancing their compassion and generosity and that these new Leos will get a deep insight into life and humanity while serving the community. leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] PRIDE OF LEOS PAGE |11 Orientation 22.23

PRIDE OF LEOS PAGE | 15 leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] Warana We are pleased to share with you the successful completion of our project "WARANA", organized by Leo Club of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science which aimed to raise awareness about sexual harassment and road safety in Sri Lanka. The "WARANA" project consisted of two phases that addressed two important issues that affects our society. Sexual harassment and road accidents are both prevalent issues that require attention and action. By raising awareness about these issues, we hope to create a safer and more inclusive society. In the first phase, we organized a stage drama and a lecture conducted by a lawyer, on the legal background on sexual harassment in Sri Lanka. The event was well attended by students from local universities and schools, and the stage drama highlighted the importance of standing up against sexual harassment. The lecturer provided valuable insights into the legal implications of such behavior. In the second phase, we collaborated with the traffic warden unit of Ananda College to conduct a seminar on road safety and accident prevention. The seminar was conducted by a police officer and was held for school and university students. The session provided valuable insights into road safety and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving. We also organized a street drama on road safety, which was well received by the local community. We believe that these initiatives will help create a safer society for all. By educating ourselves and our community about the importance of preventing sexual harassment and promoting road safety, we can work towards creating a safer and more inclusive society. We look forward to continuing our efforts to create positive change in our community.

PRIDE OF LEOS PAGE | 17 leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] Akura The disabled community in Sri Lanka faces a number of challenges that can make it difficult for them to access education and employment opportunities. Physical and social barriers often prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in society, leading to social exclusion and limited opportunities. The Leo Club of the University of Colombo Faculty of Science recognized the need to support and empower the disabled community in Sri Lanka and launched the "ARUNA" project to address these issues. The project was carried out in two phases, each aimed at improving the lives of people with disabilities in different ways. In the first phase, as the Leo Club UOCFOS we created audiobooks and donated them to the library of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. These audiobooks were specially designed to help people with visual or other disabilities access educational materials. The project's target audience was disabled students who face challenges in accessing traditional print materials. By providing them with audiobooks, the Leo Club aimed to make educational resources more inclusive and accessible. In the second phase of the project, we published motivational posts on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to empower and motivate disabled individuals in Sri Lanka. These posts and captions highlighted the achievements of disabled individuals, provided inspiration and motivation, and celebrated the unique abilities of people with disabilities. By doing so, the Leo Club UOCFOS aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by disabled individuals and to promote inclusivity and support for the disabled community. The "ARUNA" project has been a great success, and the Leo Club UOCFOS is proud to have made a positive impact on the lives of disabled individuals in Sri Lanka. The project's success has been due to the dedication and hard work of the Leo Club members, who are committed to making a difference in their community. In conclusion, the "ARUNA" project is a great example of how community service can make a real difference in the lives of people in need. The Leo Club of the University of Colombo Faculty of Science is committed to continuing its work to support and empower the disabled community in Sri Lanka, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of their future projects.

PRIDE OF LEOS PAGE | 19 leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] Templanza Templanza 2022 was a speech competition project that aimed to provide a platform for Sri Lankan youth to showcase their communication and public speaking skills. The alliance between the LEO club of the Faculty of Science at the University of Colombo and the event ensured the successful execution of the project. Templanza 2022 comprised three rounds, namely Preliminary, Semi-Finals, and Finals, under two categories: inter-university and inter-school. The competition was themed, and the school category theme was "Education your mightiest weapon," while the university category theme was "Overcoming social stigma aimed at Sri Lankan Youth." These themes were thought-provoking and aimed at encouraging the participants to express their opinions and ideas. There were also two workshops conducted for the two categories of speakers prior to the preliminary round to help the participants better understand effective communication. The preliminary rounds and the two organized workshops were held online where the participants were requested to submit their recorded video clips that were impartially judged. Consequently, the Semi-Finals and the Final rounds of the contest were held physically at the University premises, where the participants showcased their public speaking skills in front of a live audience. Overall, Templanza 2022 was a successful project that provided a valuable opportunity for Sri Lankan youth to develop their communication and public speaking skills.

The whole sky was engulfed by a smoke kind of a thing. As the news mentioned, it was smog not just regular smoke which is a serious problem. As the explorers’ avenue, it’s not just our duty to do the exploring but also to have great care towards nature which adds mesmerizing beauty. Many of us do not have a distinct definition of smog. As science students, we can spread the message about the causes and prevention methods more than others since we have the knowledge regarding it. Therefore as an avenue, we planned to conduct a smog awareness program by joining hands with BEEZ. The chief guests of the session, Prof.Erandathie Lokupitiya (Senior lecturer of the Department of Zoology and Environment Sciences, University of Colombo.) and Mr.Sarath Premasiri(Director of the Environment division of National Building and Research Organization.) explained all the relevant factors about smog all inclusively. In the end, it was all about teamwork and the innocent satisfaction after conducting a successful session.

PRIDE OF LEOS PAGE | 26 leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] DAPP Life can take you higher than drugs. Drug abuse refers to obsessive and excessive drug use, which is a common problem these days. There are over 190 million drug users around the world. This has been increasing at alarming rates among young adults under the age of 30. Regular use of drugs leads to addiction, can impact the brain, and also lead to other health problems such as kidney failure and heart problems. And also may lead to social, physical, and emotional problems. The desire to try new things and become more independent may increase teens’ tendencies to experiment with drugs. The curiosity of having these experiences and knowing how drugs would make them feel can make young people more vulnerable to peer pressure. The sad thing is some use drugs to forget and run away from their problems. It is important to be aware of the risks associated with drug use and how to recognize the signs of drug addiction and abuse. Drugs can harm our bodies in many ways. It is ruining society socially, physically, culturally, emotionally, and economically. It is easier to stay off drugs than to get off drugs. We should not let drugs get in the way of our dreams. Drugs change us to someone we never want to be. “DAPP” is a drug awareness and prevention program organized by the LEOs of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science for school students with the greatest purpose of leading young minds against the use of drugs and addiction, to guide them to keep calm and say no to drugs. The program was conducted by Ms. Disna Priyangani and successfully completed on the 17th of January 2023 at WP/ KL/ Royal College, Panadura with the dedication of all the supporters and participants. The program was aimed at educating young people about the harms of drugs and leading young minds against the use of drugs and addiction.

The Education Avenue of the Leo Club of the University Of Colombo, Faculty of Science has successfully continued the third phase of the ‘Sipsara’ project in one of the schools belonging to the Gampaha district to enhance their learning skills and their ability to face challenging exams. The third phase of Sipsara was organized for 2 consecutive days on the 12th of January and 13th of January 2023 from 8.00 a.m to 1.30 p.m at Dewalapola Ananda Vidyalaya with the contribution of many enthusiasts who have a passion for teaching. Science and Mathematics were the main subjects that were focused under this project. Revision tutorials were made and the concepts were explained in a more elaborative way to prepare them for one of the most challenging exams; G.C.E. Ordinary Level. Students were also motivated throughout the session to build up a growth mindset towards their education and the future. PRIDE OF LEOS PAGE |30 leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] Sipsara - Phase 4 “Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another. Therefore, as undergraduates, it’s one of our duties to educate our young generation. The “Sipsara” project played a key role in achieving this. “Sipsara” is one of the strongest projects organized by the Education avenue of Leo Cub of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science to build a strong basis for the education of Sri Lanka. This project was conducted in several districts of the country at different schools and it was successfully continued for a 4th phase with the sole purpose of helping the students to face their exams confidently. This was conducted on the 30th of April 2023 from 8 a.m to 1.30 p.m at the Kandulla Darmaraja Maha Vidyalaya located in Kuliyapitiya. Science was the subject that was mainly focused on this phase. Therefore questions based revision was conducted by the avenue members in order to familiarize the students with the theory concepts at the same time. This was a great support that was given to the students who are facing G.C.E Ordinary Level Examination this year as they have only limited time to get practised to face the exams. Also, we were able to make them confident towards the upcoming exam through the continuous motivation done throughout the project.

And that growing your own food may be one of the most powerful steps you can take for the health of yourself, your family, and your planet. Small food gardens near the family home have traditionally made an important contribution to the family nutrition. Home gardens help provide variety in the diet and supply vital vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates, and proteins. Good nutrition helps to resist disease and help to improve the family health condition. More Food - Less Hunger phase 2 is a project that was initiated with the intention of promoting Local home gardens and to overcome hunger in the community. This green project was held in Thoppuwa village and there we focused on small-scale local gardeners. We visited the area and distributed vegetable plants such as tomato, brinjal, cabbage and many other vegetable plants among the villagers. And, we encourage them to grow them by providing relevant guidelines and instructions to proceed with home gardening in an effective manner. As we all know home gardens are an effective option to address food security in the world in case of any challenging situations. And this small step will have a huge impact on reducing the hidden hunger, diseases caused by micronutrient deficiency and malnutrition. So, with the dedication and the tremendous support of Our Leos we were able to complete the project successfully with enormous blessings from the villagers. These kinds of projects are much needed these days due to the prevailing food crisis and highly inflated food prices. And by empowering home gardens it enhances the food production and improves the livelihood.

Proving that the Leos of community service avenue, Leo Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Science took lead in helping those who are in need through their project, which was launched on 4th May 2023 at "Balakaawala Kanishta Vidyalaya, Akuressa". The chosen school is situated in a rural area that lacks several infrastructure facilities. The students are from families with very low incomes and face a lot of difficulties in day-to-day life. With the fund raised from the generous leos of the club, the project organizers were able to dry food parcels to the students of the school. The project was a huge success, and the organizing committee was praised a lot for their hard work as well. Without the help and guidance of the seniors and executive committee of the Leo Club of UOCFOS, the project would not be a success. We would like to show our heartfelt gratitude to them and to everyone who helped us to make this teamwork, a reality!

The objective of the second phase of Meta Plus 2.0 was to inspire and equip Sri Lankan undergraduates with the necessary guidance especially those who are participating in the competition, Phase 3 of Meta Plus 2.0, to select research topics that align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the 7th, 8th, and 9th goals. Through a supplementary video series, valuable insights, and knowledge on these three SDGs were provided empowering participants to base their research projects on impactful and relevant themes. After many discussions, it was decided to publish three insightful videos covering each selected SDG on YouTube as interview sessions. The suitable experts for guest speakers were chosen with the guidance of the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Colombo, Faculty of Science. The first interview type video session was conducted by Dr. Thusitha Sugathapala who is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering of the University of Moratuwa whose research areas of interest cover both energy and environment fields, including renewable energy; energy efficiency; and air quality management. This was held on 20th April 2023 from 6pm virtually. The video session covered mostly about the 7th SDG and answered the questions such as the common challenges that researchers face when conducting research on energy access and sustainability, how to overcome them, how to engage with stakeholders and community members to ensure that our research is relevant and meaningful to those who are most affected by energy poverty. Many concerns and insights related to SDG 9 was discussed here. The best practices for publishing research related to industry, innovation, and infrastructure to disseminate knowledge and promote progress towards SDG 9, examples of successful industry and infrastructure projects that have made significant progress towards, specific institutions or organizations that can provide guidance and support to researchers and innovators working on projects related to SDG 9 were some important facts that were discussed.

Every little bit counts. Even the smallest actions can make a big difference in reducing our impact on the planet. As the world population continues to grow, the demand for energy is increasing rapidly. However, most of the energy sources we rely on today are non-renewable and emit harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to climate change and other environmental problems. Conserving energy has many benefits, not only for the environment but also for the economy and our personal well-being. This is why it’s crucial to inform people about the importance of conserving energy. "Thirasara” was a project organized by the Leo Club of UOC FOS, with the aim of educating society about the importance of energy conservation. Our Leos made some creative video clips that inform society about the importance of conserving energy and uploaded them to social media platforms. We hope society will act together to conserve energy, so we can ensure a brighter future for ourselves and the generation to come. PAGE |40 leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] PRIDE OF LEOS Isiwara Asapuwa Phase 2 A recipe has no soul. You as the cook, must bring the soul to recipe”. - Thomas Keller. The lack of accessibility of “healthy food” is dominantly seen in low-income communities around the world. Sri Lanka is one of the nations with a well-balanced diet enriched with nutrients. Sri Lanka has a diverse range of food products, mostly of plat origin. Starting with its staple rice, the country holds a rich treasure of food items. Sri Lankans consume many leafy greens in form of vegetables, many spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and cloves and also tuber crops containing starch. Healthiness is always connected with the local foods and routines. Overall, Sri Lanka has the best food recipes which remain unexplored by the world community. Isiwara Asapuwa-phase 2 was one of the efforts to find healthy local delicacies. The project was organized by Leos of UOCFOS with the intention of promoting the healthy food that with a medicinal value. Here we conducted a food competition at Thoppuwa village. And highlighted the significance of Local healthy food to the community. And this was a great opportunity to aware them regarding the importance of practicing the healthy food items in the diets regularly. This session was conducted with the presence of two Ayurveda doctors and the explained the fact in a detailed manner. We were able to discover 10 new recipes of local foods from the competitors and the best three out of them were selected to be rewarded. Actually those were amazing food recipes unique to Sri Lankans and endowed with medicinal value. It was a great pleasure for all of us to take part in this kind of extraordinary projects which lead to a healthy nation.

PRIDE OF LEOS PAGE |42 leouocfos leoclubuocfos [email protected] Jump Beyond Limits “Don’t ever let an obstacle define your limits, seize the opportunities and jump beyond limits”. There are many talented youths hidden in the heart of Sri Lanka. Athletics was able to lift the name of Sri Lanka to a global level by giving birth to many young athletes and training them to establish Guinness records. Athletics enhances teamwork, support, courage, resilience and most of all caring to each other. We at University of Colombo are thriving to provide opportunities to such superstars to showcase their talents. The Sports Avenue of the Leo Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Science had recently commenced a project to construct a long jump pit at Kottawa North Dharmapala Vidyalaya. Athletics is teamwork and we would love to enhance the quality of that and looking after each other as a team. We strongly believe that all the students should have the privilege of proper sports equipment and have access to proper sports environment to polish their god given talents. We as the younger generation should make sure that we provide support as much as we can to all the talented athletes in Sri Lanka to jump beyond the limits. Leo Club of UOCFOS would continue helping the athletes where needed as we strongly believe that is the true sportsmanship.
