Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Physically challenging but supremely rewarding, the world-famous Inca Trail is a four-day hike within
the ability of most people with a reasonable level of fitness. Totalling 44km (27 miles) in length,
and reaching a maximum elevation of 4,200m (13,776ft), you’ll hike over mountain passes, through
cloud forest and past incredible Inca constructions, including an original causeway and tunnel. This
trek will leave you in awe of the ancient civilisation and of the spectacular scenery all around. You’ll
start at Km 82, passing several smaller ruin sites, the first of which is Llactapata. The second day
climbs the long, steep path to Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point on the trek.
Crossing the next pass, at just under 4,000m (13,113ft) you can enjoy superb views of the snow-
capped Cordillera Vilcabamba. Soon you reach the serene ruins of Phuyupatamarca, or the ‘Town
Above the Clouds’ - you’ll either camp here or another 90 minutes farther along close to the ruins of
Wiñay Wayna (‘Forever Young’), with its grandiose terraced hillside setting. Hiking boots and woolly
alpaca hats may not be the height of fashion at home, but here they’re standard issue - it can get
quite chilly at night and you should be prepared for the odd shower along the way. A team of local
porters who speed ahead will make sure you’re fed and watered and camp is set up each evening.
On the last morning, you’ll climb the steps to Intipunku, the ‘Sun Gate’, to catch your first glimpse
of Machu Picchu through the rising morning mist. When you consider its worldwide fame today, it’s
extraordinary to think that not once was it mentioned in the chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors,
and archaeologists are still divided over its function. There’s time to tour the famous Inca ruin, climb
up to Huayna Picchu or visit the Inca Bridge before catching the train back to Cuzco, the city of
civilisation and hot showers! (3B, 3L, 3D)

This once-in-a-lifetime journey will cover spectacular scenery and fill your head to the brim with
facts that bring the Incas to life. The views and complexity of the Inca constructions are mesmerising
and it will all help to keep your mind focused on the long walk to Machu Picchu. You’ll move from high

walk the trail with just your daypack filled with essentials. Along the way, pause at beautifully-sited

a causeway and tunnel. On the final day, it’s a relatively short walk and then a climb up the steps to
Intipunku, the ‘Sun Gate’, to watch sunrise over Machu Picchu. The magical sight of these mysterious
ruins and perfectly-engineered terraces will take your breath away. Its existence was known for
centuries to the indigenous population, but it was not until a local boy led the American explorer,
Hiram Bingham, to the site in 1911 that its fame started to spread into the outside world. You
