Dichotomous Key via S.N.A.I.L ROS ADILA BINTI MUHAMAD HUDRI [email protected] SMK CLIFFORD
Dichotomous Key via S.N.A.I.L Classification of organisms is one of the content standard that included in form two Science syllabus, where students should be able to differentiate organisms using a dichotomous key based on common characteristics and able to characterize the major taxonomy group. Here, the students always has problem to construct the dichotomous key itself. Dichotomous key is a method used by biologist to identify and classify organisms systematically. In order to help student to encounter the problems, teacher came out with Dichotomous Key via S.N.A.I.L. Dichotomous Key via S.N.A.I.L is a learning aid to help the students to construct the dichotomous key step by step. The word “snail” is actually an acronym to help student to remember the steps to construct the dichotomous key and the shell of the snail has rotation notes on classification of animals. This will enable the students to characterize the animals correctly. The cuteness of the S.N.A.I.L itself will also attract the students attention that may lead to fun learning and strengthen the pupil’s understanding. ROS ADILA BINTI MUHAMAD HUDRI SMK Clifford Kuala Kangsar, Perak Abstract 2
Students could not construct dichotomous key of animals or plants based on common characteristics Help students to construct dichotomous key of animals correctly via S.N.A.I.L • All Form Two DLP students (19) • All Form Three DLP students (10)
The two main groups of organisms are animals and plants. It can be classified further into smaller groups based on their common and different characteristics. Dichotomous key is a method used by biologist to identify and classify organisms systematically by using series of couplets Each couplets contain two statements describing characteristics of a particular organism.
"Dichotomous" means "divided into two parts". Therefore, dichotomous keys always give two choices in each step. https://biologydictionary.net/dichotomous-key/ “A dichotomous key is a tool created by scientists to help scientists and laypeople identify objects and organisms”. S.N.A.I.L is an acronym to help students to construct dichotomous key step by step as follows: S-elect (Selection of animals or plants normally derive from question) N-umber (number of key-one fewer number of selected animal/ plants ) A-rrange (arrange the set of choices a. and b.) I-dentify (identify the characteristic using rotation notes on the shell of snail) L-ocate (locate whether the key is correct Or not) Done! 9
1. Teacher explains on how to construct dichotomous key using PowerPoint presentation 2. Students use S.N.A.I.L to help them construct dichotomous key in pairs. 3. Few students were chose to try it out in front of the class and peer assessment will be used. 4. Teacher guides and supervises. 10
