3CHOOSE
BIODEGRADABLE LITTER

Clay-based litter is bad news for the environment. Not only does it have to
be mined, which leads to deforestation and loss of wildlife habitats, it’s not
biodegradable or compostable, so once it makes its way to landfill, it won’t
decompose.

Natural alternatives, which are made from wood or plant-based materials,
are a kinder option — and they can be safely composted or, in some
cases, even flushed down the loo. Paul Trott, UK marketing manager
at Catit, says that they have recently launched two types of Catit Go
Natural! Litter: one is made from sustainably-sourced wood offcuts and
the other from pea husk fibres. Both of these are clumping litters, which
is another important way to reduce waste. Removing clumped
waste daily means that the remaining litter remains clean
and fresh for longer.

The trend for premium pet food means that many brands now use

HEALTH

Although semi-longhaired, they are relatively low maintenance. They do
require regular grooming, using a wide-toothed metal comb, but the
coat texture is silky and it is the work of a few minutes to ensure their
coat is kept in tip top condition. However, failure to groom will result in
mats, and it is also important to remove old coat when they moult in
the spring or summer.

If you are considering adding a Ragdoll to your family, please
ensure you do your homework thoroughly before purchasing! Ragdolls
can carry a gene that leads to a form of heart disease called HCM
(hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) that can result in heart failure at an
early age. In 2007, a DNA test
became available to breeders to
identify the one known defective
gene that can cause HCM in
the Ragdoll. Under the GCCF
registration policy for Ragdolls,
all Ragdoll cats registered active
for breeding from February 2016
must be tested for the gene.
Discuss this with your vet and the
breeder of your new kitten so that
you understand the implications,
and ask to be given copies of the
parents’ test results along with their
other kitten paperwork.

Neutered male Ragdoll cats
weigh between 12 — 20 pounds,
