Letter to the Editor By: Mark Fertel
Dear Editor,
I would like to express my thanks
towards you for introducing me to the various new inventions of the 1920’s. As a dad, it is very important to me to find activities to do with my family, while keeping them safe. Before this, I was previously unaware of the technology that was being developed. How could I be so blind? I must purchase some BandAids, as little Jimmy is always climbing up trees and scratching himself. He will be so happy to know that there is a safer way to stop the bleeding other than just using a wet washcloth on it.
Additionally, I am very excited to bring my family to the drive in restaurants. As a proud owner of a convertible car, there is nothing that would amuse my little boy more than taking a drive to the restaurant and picking up our food without even having to get out of the car. I can only imagine how this will affect my life, as now I can pick up food on the way to work. Although the traffic lights slow me down, I am thankful that they will be keeping us safe.
In terms of the magazine in general, I don’t think it is possible to do a better job. You guys have certainly satisfied the needs of everyone from technology articles, to sports, to music, your magazine has it all.

Model T
By: Daniel Katz
Henry Ford, along with Ford Motor Company, invented and produced the first ever car, the Model T. His ideas enabled easier transportation at a smaller cost. It was very durable and a trustworthy piece of equipment. The Model T made up for 40% of car sales in the United States at the time. The mastermind behind the production of the first ever car, was so ingenious that it is still possible to run a Model T today. Well of course, it is a newer and improved, the original idea is still there though. It all started with the Model T, starting one of the most revolutionary inventions ever. Provided below are the specs of the original Model T:
Speed: Travels up to 45 MPH Color: Black
Engine: Simple Horsepower: 20
Fuel Tank: 10 gallons
Appearance: Slick
Price: $300$850
Size: Planted on a 100 inch wheelbase chassis

The Day I Soared
By: Charles Lindbergh
Ghostwriter: Evan Rosenthal
The Orteig prize was on my mind on that crisp May day. It was May 20, 1927 and I was ready to make history, by being the first human to complete a nonstop transatlantic flight. As
I walked towards the Spirit of St Louis, the crowd cheered and hollered. A man said to his young son,“Never forget this day, because today you are witnessing history.”I will admit, a sense of foreboding came over me as I climbed into the cockpit, as I would be the sixth man to have ever attempted this great feat. My predecessors had either been killed or never heard from again and I was determined to finally end that cycle.
I started the pre ignition sequence and the engine and propeller roared to life. The plane began to slowly creep forward and then started sprinting down the runway. As soon as the wheels left the ground, I glanced at my watch and saw that the time was 7:52 am. For 33.5 hours I flew through blinding fog, terrible storms, and constant icing on the wings.
When I finally landed at Le Bourget Airport in France, the crowd stormed the field. There were cheering people as far as my eyes could see. When the plane finally came to a dead stop on the runway the crowd surrounded the plane. They opened the cockpit and put me on their shoulders while a thunderous applause boomed from every direction. I had made history at that very moment and established a legacy for myself that will live on long after I am gone.

Suffrage, Or Suffering? By: Caleb Milobsky
The past decade has been full of trying
times for many Americans. One specific group of people who overcame the highest of hurdles in the past ten years have been the women of America. They have overcome their discrimination and they earned their rights. The
women of America, lead by many people including the famous Lacey Burns, put on demonstrations and even picketing the White House. Many Women endured many hardships while on their road to equal rights.
Any people were arrested, beat and had other unspeakables done to them. The most famous of actions taken was the picketing of the White House. “Suffragettes” would stand outside the White House with signs that displayed their cause, demanding the right to vote.
Another famous act of valor from these
women, was the hunger strike they went on while in prison. Women would get arrested for “obstructing traffic” when in turn they are really being arrested because they are political protesters. They would be given absurd sentences for these petty crimes. While in prison these women were tortured and force fed. They were violated beyond imagination. These women are the real heroes of the 1920’s. They changed history and our constitution. They changed all of us, forever.

The Rocket Man By: Jeffrey Owen
Robert Goddard is an innovator. He has been working on this invention for a while. A new way of making a rocket. His inventions is known as the “LiquidPropellant rocket”. How does it work you ask? Well let me explain...
A liquid rocket is great because of its
high density liquid to low volume propeller ratio allows for the turbopumps to be relativelylight. When you combine the speed it take to get to the combustion chamber, the speed being fast, grants the rocket to be low mass but great speeds. Making the ratio better, and overall being a faster rocket. This concept is commonly used in satellites that orbit around the earth.
Although there are more commonly used liquids there have been many liquids tried. Here are some of the more common ones: Cryogenic, SemiCryogenic, and Hypergolic. These are all combination filled with manydifferent combinations of flammable chemicals.
In order for the combustion chamber to
not overheat, one must use an injector. An injector is somewhat of a cooling agent that rapidly cools the chemicals that were let out during the propelling process. Methods of ignition include pyrotechnic, electrical (spark or hot wire), and chemical. This allows for maximum use and since there are different ways to start it, each way is used in different circumstances.
There is much more research to be done in
this topic. Although this idea has a lot of potential there are many areas in need of improvement. The cooling does not always work correctly. The chemicals are not necessarily the best ones to use, and we must find the most efficient chemicals to make this a product ready to mass produce and sell to agencies that really do need this product.

The Greatest Invention Since Sliced Bread By:Caleb Milobsky
July 24, 1927, this is a monumental day for mankind. In fact is the best thing since sliced bread. Thats right folks, it is the bread slicer machine created and patented by the brilliant Otto Fredrick. This futuristic machine can slice and plasticwrap a loaf of bread with ease and to perfection. With this new machine, sandwiches, toast, and just about any other snack that is bread related will be easier and more delicious. With the perfect slice of bread to accompany any occasion.
I found the bread slicing machine to be something can revolutionize the baking industry forever. It can speed production and allow for more bread which allows for more money. The
machine is simple in its technique.
T he loaf of bread starts off on a conveyer belt on top of the machine. Next, it moves down a small elevator to the slicing knives where it is promptly sliced up to perfectio. Finally, it is quickly wrapped in plastic and continued on the conveyor belt to later be packaged and distributed. This machine is amazing to watch, and no doubt, with time can and will, turn into something greater than we can ever imagine.

Louis Armstrong: A Sound Worth Listening To By: Mark Fertel
I just came from local Chicago club where the most amazing music I have ever heard was played. It was fellow Louis Armstrong, a fellow New Orleanian, along with King Oliver and his Creole Jazz Band. Never have I seen someone play with such a confidence. He has a certain swagger to him that can’t be imitated. What really diversified his performance was his trumpet solos. Previously, at every other performance I had been to every player uses the same melody, but Armstrong was able to create harmony with every single song. It quickly occurred to me just how musically talented he was, and why so many people had packed in this club to see him play.
As I looked around, people of all races filled the room. Blacks and whites together just wanted to enjoy some music together. I then began to think, not only was Armstrong bringing harmony to the music, but he was bringing harmony to the people. He was giving them something that they could bond over and connect to together. And it wasn’t just for the present. Louis Armstrong’s musical strategies are already being talked about in various jazz schools so they could teach the future. It is no surprise to me that Armstrong is able to unite people. One of the first times he ever touched his lips to a mouthpiece was at a home for troubled kids, a place where people would have to come together to overcome differences.
Along with his trumpet, Armstrong also has a tremendous voice. Scat singing is something that I had heard before, but Armstrong was able to do it so well that it seemed almost entirely new to me. He was able to use his voice almost as creatively as the trumpet. Throughout the show he would use his vocals to shorten or elongate his phrases and improvise according to the melody.
This is a show that I would recommend to anyone and everyone. Louis Armstrong is not a sound, he is the sound. His music unites people and is pleasing to the ear. It is truly the sound of the 1920’s.

“I’m innovative, I demonstrated, this people played it” 2 Chainz
By: Daniel Katz
The 1920’s was a crucial time, full of
very important inventions. Ranging from very big, important inventions, like the Model T to small, but still important inventions, like KoolAid. Who doesn’t love some good KoolAid on a hot summer day? Cruising in your brand new Model T and drinking some KoolAid, sounds great to me! Another big invention in this time was the bread slicer. Cutting your own bread is such a hassle, but Otto Frederick Rohwedder has everyone covered.
Who would have ever thought that the 1920’s would have made TV shows so interesting nowadays? If it weren't for John Augustus Larson The Maury Show, Steve Wilkos and Jerry Springer would not be nearly as interesting. It is obvious that the only reason people watch these shows is to see the results of the lie detector test. The test, tests many different parts of your body, like blood pressure, while asking you questions and can figure out if you are lying or not. Usually when people lie, their heart rate goes up and things like such, and the tester can tell that.
One of the smallest inventions in this time period, has become one of the most commonly used things. This invention is the BandAid, and no one would would argue that this was one of the most important inventions ever. An open cut, dripping blood, is one of the most annoying things ever. What is even more annoying is when you have to stand there and hold your cut with a towel, until it stops bleeding. That is the exact reason why almost every home in the world has a box of BandAids
handy at all times. Besides for BandAids, you know when a lot of families love to? Pulling up to a drive in restaurant in your convertible.
Luckily the 1920’s brought the world both of those things. But before the 1920’s it was hard to get to the restaurant safely because there was no traffic signal and crashes would happen often. Appreciation is given to Garrett Morgan for allowing us to drive safely nowadays, with traffic lights all around us. As seen, the 1920’s was a very innovative period of time, and it benefits us now, and will continue to benefit everyone for eternity.

Prohibition a Beautiful Idea
By: Gary Goldmeier
Congress just passed the 18th
amendment, the banning of Alcohol. Prohibition has been a debated topic for the past few years. Thewomenin society are the true leaders behind this movement. It is to be believed that excessive alcohol consumption leads to unemployment, domestic violence, and even poverty. This is a beautiful idea, realistically there is no true benefits to alcohol. The only question we have to ask is,“Will society be able to upkeep this law?”
Alcohol is addictive, and some view it as fun.It will be hard to keep the addicts and young adults away from the alcohol. People will always find a way to acquire something if they really do need or want that thing badly. There has been recent new of “speakeasies,” secret bars where you can purchase alcohol. In New York, there are thousands of speakeasies. The Right now, the illegal sales of liquor is at an all time high.
The Treasury Department is struggling to contain the amount of alcohol consumption, and sales. Organized crime is thriving off of the sales of illegal trading. The gangs are making plenty of money just by smuggling in alcohol from Canada. Are we doing the right thing?
The people who want alcohol that badly are
clearly able to acquire it through illegal trade benefiting their gangs crime,or making it on their own. The only people who this is affecting is the people who would drink socially. That is not the reason why this amendment was made. The amendment was made for the alcoholics. The people that beat their wives, lost their jobs, not the person who would go out and get a last word, or a french 75. The people who really want it, who crave it, willgetit.Sowe are not really stopping much. Peoplewillstill getdrunk, peoplewill still be a there lives, people will still be lazy and lose their jobs. We are supporting organised crime. Making more criminals, that is our effect.
As much as I want to say banners alcohol,I don't think we should do it.I think it will not benefit America, rather it will hurt America. Another solution might be tax alcohol like crazy. People will buy it the government makes money, but some people will stop buying it, to some people it won't be worth it.

The Great Bambino By: Gary Goldmeier
September 30 1937, that day the
greatest support changed. Last week George Herman “The babe” Ruth hit 60 home runs in the course of a season. People saw this coming the “murderous row,” it was bound to happen eventually. The greatest lineup in MLB history, Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri and Bob Meusel. In the 1921 season Ruth hit 59 homeruns, noone thought he would be able to reach such a high number again, a fluke they said. That was until it 16 home runs in the span of only a month. He tied his record on September 29. The next day he broke his record.
Before Babe Ruth showed up the previous record was held by New Williamson on the Chicago white sox, in the past decade and a half Babe Ruth has set the record in four different occasions. I can see this time period in baseball be known as the Babe Ruth Era or the Era of the Great Bambino. This 20 year period will go down in the books as some of the greatest ever, because of one man. This 20 year period will go down in the books as some of the greatest ever, because of one man.
On September 30th in the 8th
inning count at 21, The great bambino cracked the ball deep right field. As it soared over the wall, fans went crazy, ripping up cups and using that as confetti.
In the top of the ninth the people sitting in right field waved their handkerchiefs at Babe Ruth. As fans cheer and Babe saluted, he was solidified as the best slugger to play the game.
