IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
Demonstrate patience and genuine concern when speaking with patients.
Every patient with cough of 2 weeks or more should have 2 sputum samples examined for AFB
Patients on treatment for TB should have follow-up sputum samples as per schedule
Start a new Laboratory Serial Number at the beginning of each calendar year
write all positive results in Red.
Write the sputum smear grade, as given below. Do not write "Pos", "Positive", "+"> etc
If the slide has Results Positive (grading)
More than 10 AFB per field POS 3+
1 to 10 AFB per field POS 2+
10 to 99 AFB per 100 oil immersion fields POS 1+
1 to 9 AFB per 100 oil immersion fields POS Scanty (and record exact figure)
No. AFB per 100 oil immersion fields NEG ....
Write the detailed address of every patient examined for diagnosis
Write the TB Number of every patient examined for follow-up
Keep Positive and negative slides until they have been reviewed by a laboratory supervisor. Destroy all Positive slides,
and never use negative slides for TB work again. Only use new slides for TB work.
Destroy all contaminated material (Sputum containers, wooden sticks, etc.) as per Laboratory Manual.
Report all results to the treating physician within one day.
