2020
WHAT
With the COVID-19 global pandemic, and the responsibility to keep our
swimmers, volunteers and spectators safe, yet actively engaged, we
have replaced the 2020 SAA-LIS Open Water and Pool events with
a fun Personal Challenge event.
Starting July 10th through August 1st , all are invited to participate in this
any-activity, fund-raising challenge. Activities can include walking, biking,
running, golfing, swimming, kayaking or any favorite safe activity. Personally
challenge yourself, your Team or others to go the ‘virtual 85 mile distance’
across our SAALIS nine Westchester stops…from The New York Athletic Club
to Larchmont Yacht Club, Larchmont Shore Club, Orienta Beach Club,
Coveleigh Club, Westchester Country Club, Chappaqua Swim & Tennis Club,
Lakeside Field Club, ending at Lake Isle Country Club a virtual 85 mile loop!
BACKGROUND
Founded in 1987, Swim Across America, Inc. has raised over $85 million
dollars for cancer research and treatment programs at our country’s finest
hospitals and managed care facilities. In 1994, Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center in New York renamed one of its highest priority labs in honor
of Swim Across America.
WHY
Dedicated to Kathy Webers, this marks our 28th year for Swim Across
America Long Island Sound swim with proceeds to benefit the Cancer Support
Team, The Tommy Palazzo Fellowship for Columbia University and Morgan
Stanley Children’s Hospital at New York-Presbyterian, and The Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Swim Across America Laboratory.
MISSION STATEMENT
Swim Across America, Inc. (SAA) is dedicated to raising money and awareness
for cancer research, prevention, and treatment through swimming related
events. With the help of hundreds of volunteers nationwide and past and current
Olympians, SAA is helping find a cure for cancer through athleticism,
community outreach and direct service.

IN MEMORY OF
KATHY WEBERS was a friend to all who knew her.
She was born in New York City in 1948 and moved with her
family to Larchmont, NY shortly thereafter. Her sense of humor,
positive attitude and love for life made her a joy to know. Kathy
loved tennis, paddle tennis, decorating and gardening. She
valued all of her many friends and always talked about how
blessed she was to have them. Kathy was a loving mother and
wife; the strong family foundation and family values that she
created live on today.

SWIM ACROSS AMERICA
LETTER FROM
THE CHAIRMAN
Dear Friends of Swim Across America,
TONY SIBIO Celebrating our 28th Long Island Sound Swim is being
2020 Chairman dedicated in memory of Kathy Webers, and to all the
families and friends of those who have fought, and
continue to fight the battle against cancer. We will
continue our swim related fundraisers until there is a
one hundred percent cure rate.
We are doing something different this year - separate
but still united to fight cancer - with our own personal challenge by walking, running,
swimming, kayaking, and golfing - keeping with our tradition and praying and dreaming
that there will be a cure for everyone touched by cancer and Covid 19.
The proceeds from this year’s events will support the Cancer Support Team, the
Tommy Palazzo Swim Across America Research Fellowship at Columbia University
and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian Medical Center,
the Swim Across America Research Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
in addition to two new labs - one for pediatric cancer research and one for adult
solid tumors. Take a look at the following pages to see all the wonderful work these
beneficiaries are able to accomplish because of the proceeds from our swims. Our
labs have been on the cutting edge for research and development and Cancer Support
Team has helped many families thanks to all of you.
A team is a group of people working together on a task. Our team has been able to
accomplish much in 28 years. Our first year in 1992, was a small group of 17 swimmers
raising $15,000 with a dream of making a difference. A difference we have made!
Last year, we had 862 swimmers, over 300 volunteers, and over 4,000 individual and
corporate donors. From 1992 The Long Island Sound Swim has raised more than
$20,000,000. Quite an accomplishment! Swim Across America will host personal
challenges in 22 other cities throughout the US.
On behalf of the Long Island Sound Committee, we thank the memorial and honorary
Teams, individual swimmers, boaters, kayakers, volunteers, donors, corporate
sponsors, in-kind donors, Olympians, National Team, Larchmont Yacht Club,
Larchmont Shore Club, Coveleigh Club, Chappaqua Pool & Tennis, Lake Isle Country
Club, Lakeside Pool Club, New York Athletic Club Travers Island, Orienta Beach Club,
and Westchester Country Club.
I would like to thank our committee and sub-committee members, their friends, and
families who have worked year round to make our swims successful. It would be
impossible to do it without your help. I am proud to be a part of this team and we will
continue to fight until there is a 100% cure rate
Sincerely,
Tony Sibio & The 2020 Committee

Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering
Cancer Center
JEDD D. WOLCHOK To our friends of Swim Across America:
MSD, PhD
The Swim Across America Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering
Cancer Center (MSK) is grateful for your continued generous support
and thankful for all of the swimmers and volunteers who take part in
Swim Across America’s events. Philanthropy has allowed our laboratory
to establish a collaborative network of investigators across diverse
fields and to continue to drive progress by translating discoveries into
newtreatments for people with cancer. The work supported by Swim
Across America has led to pioneering research breakthroughs that benefit
people with cancer around the world. We are honored to highlight some
of the many advances made this year.
Immunotherapy Advances
The Swim Across America Laboratory is leading investigations to find
novel ways to outsmart cancer and stimulate the immune system. We
applied what we have learned about how the immune system combats
melanoma to treat other cancers, such as lung cancer, breast cancer,
and bladder cancer. Recently, we have rapidly deployed our knowledge
of immunology to better understand how people respond to COVID-19
and how cancer and its treatment play a role.
SWIM ACROSS AMERICA
SWIM ACROSS AMERICA BENEFICIARY
To determine why this immunotherapy approach is so effective for
some patients and types of cancer but not others, we needed to
identify alternative immune pathways. Using the immunotherapy
target known as glucocorticoid-induced tumor necrosis factor
receptor-related protein (GITR), our group completed the first in-human
phase I clinical trial of TRX518, an anti-GITR antibody, in patients
with advanced cancer. These findings, published in the journal Nature
Medicine, led us to investigate TRX518 with other immunotherapies
blocking the PD-1 pathway in treatment-resistant tumors.
We are advancing studies of lung cancer that have a common type of
mutation, known as a KRAS mutation. Our recent findings, published
in the journal Cell Reports, demonstrate that intermittent rather
than continuous treatment with MEK inhibitors showed superior
antitumor effects, delayed drug resistance, and in combination with
immunotherapy, resulted in prolonged survival.
MSK’s Swim Across America Laboratory has experienced another
highly productive year, yielding many exciting results. We are
tremendously grateful for your continued support and confidence in
our team’s ability to bring forward new and better approaches to
cancer therapy.
Warmest regards,

The Research Laboratory of Luis Diaz
July 1, 2020
To our friends of Swim Across America:
Philanthropic support from Swim Across America has enabled our laboratory
to continue making strides in groundbreaking cancer research focused on
understanding and treating tumors. Our laboratory is tremendously grateful for
your generosity in funding a fellowship for our postdoctoral scholar, Dr. Benoît
Rousseau, to aid us in this endeavor.
Progress in Tumor Response Research
When cancer is diagnosed, a tissue biopsy is usually taken from a patient and
sequenced to characterize the tumor and identify specific DNA mutations that
can guide treatment. Several drugs targeting these biomarker mutations are
highly effective in treating tumors in these patients. Tumors that trigger an
immune system response can also respond to treatment with immunotherapy.
Unfortunately, most tumors do not have these mutations, so these treatments
are helpful for only a few individuals.
Our pioneering research, which is funded by Swim Across America, is aimed
answering two fundamental questions: What characteristics of tumors cause
an immune response, and how can we modify tumors to promote these
characteristics and trigger an immune response? We have already made
significant progress toward answering these vital questions. Notably, our proof-
of-concept phase I clinical trial will assess the combination of the FDA-approved
drugs temozolomide and cisplatin in modifying the genetic makeup of a tumor
to make it responsive to immunotherapy.
We look forward to reporting our successes to you and remain tremendously
grateful for the continued support and confidence in our efforts. Together we
will work toward creating more innovative treatment options and move the odds
in favor of people with cancer.
With Sincerest Gratitude,

To our friends of Swim Across America:
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude on behalf of the Department of
Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). Swim Across
America’s generosity and support has allowed us to push forward important
and innovative research initiatives, with the aim of bringing more effective and
less-toxic therapies to children with cancer.
Pediatric Cancer Research Update
Our research focuses on specific pathways that are known to contribute to
the development and drug resistance of many pediatric tumors, including
various types of sarcoma and neuroblastoma. Recently, drugs designed to
target proteins in cancer cells that are crucial to their growth and survival
have shown therapeutic benefit against many pediatric cancers. Eventually,
however, cancer cells develop ways to bypass the effects of these targeted
drugs. Furthermore, certain pediatric tumors, such as neuroblastoma,
In preclinical studies in the lab, we have evaluated a novel drug, known as
TPX-0005, which targets several different pathways that could slow or stop
a tumor’s growth. Not only have we seen very promising responses across
several tumor models but, when combined with chemotherapy, TPX-0005
0005 has been shown to bolster treatment response even in the difficult-to-
treat neuroblastoma. We are now in the process of translating these exciting
results into an early phase trial for pediatric patients.
On behalf of the MSK Kids community, and most importantly, our patients and
their families, we wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you for your tremendous
showing of support for our research program.

To Our Friends at the “Swim Across America” Long Island Swim:
Thank you for supporting pediatric cancer research at Columbia
University Irving Medical Center. We are incredibly proud of everyone’s
effort to continue to participate and fundraise “Making Waves in a
Different Way” in light of COVID19.
The Swim Across America funding is supporting novel research on
immunotherapy for childhood solid tumors and brain tumors, led by
Dr. Robyn Gartrell-Corrado. Swim Across America initially supported
Dr. Gartrell-Corrado during her career development as a postdoctoral
fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Yvonne Saenger. Dr. Gartrell is now
an independent investigator and faculty member at Columbia in the
Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
The Gartrell- Corrado Laboratory uses new technology to process,
visualize and analyze tumors evaluating the immune system in the
area around the cancer. Additionally, using methods developed in
treating adults with immunotherapy, Dr. Gartrell-Corrado is designing
novel clinical trials using these incredible treatments to improve and
prolong the life of children with some of the most devastating cancers.

To our Friends at Swim Across America:
Simply put, Cancer Support Team helps anyone with a diagnosis of cancer
who lives in southern Westchester. Our team of registered nurses, case
managers and social workers help patients navigate a complex and often
frightening diagnosis. We focus not only on the cancer itself, but also on
the hidden side – the emotional and financial repercussions associated
with the disease.
Our services are provided at no cost. We visit patients and families at
home, or in the community. Because we do not charge, we must raise
every dollar every year, and that is where you come in.
Swim Across America’s support is critical to ensuring that our services
remain available to the hundreds of people who rely on us. Here is what
your dollars help us do:
• RN visits where patients learn about symptom control and pain management
• C ounseling sessions with our social worker to handle anxiety and fear
associated with cancer
• Case management to assist with obtaining government and other benefits
• Volunteer rides to and from life-saving chemo and radiation treatments
• Financial assistance grants to pay expenses insurance will not cover
To learn more about Cancer Support Team’s services please visit our website
at www.cancersupportteam.org. On behalf of our staff and especially the
patients and families we serve, thank you for your ongoing generosity.
Best wishes for another successful Swim!

TEAM IRWIN
In this unprecedented time, Team
Irwin, more now than ever, continues
to support all those fighting cancer
and who continue their courageous
battles. Due to Covid 19 many have
had to postpone their treatments and
doctors visits. We will continue to
support them each and every day.
Go Team Irwin!
TEAM MASTERS
On Team Masters each of us has
our own reason for swimming -
a lost parent, a child who has been
pronounced cancer-free, a friend
fighting for his or her life - for each
of us it is different. But the goal is
the same - to find new cures and
defeat Cancer. That’s why we fight.
TEAM NYAC
For over 15 years Team NYAC has
been making waves to fight cancer
and we will continue to do so until
there is a cure.
SWIM ACROSS AMERICA
TEAM OBC
We participate in Swim Across
America to help fight a disease that
affects everyone. SAA continues
to fund life-saving research and
provides grants to beneficiaries
that may not have received funding
otherwise. Through these efforts, we
believe one day we will find a cure.
TEAM SHARK BITES
We are committed to
Swim Across America,
because cancer does not take
a day off, it does not rest, and
neither can we. So even in
times of a pandemic and unrest,
we need to keep fighting!
TEAM SIDLEY
We are colleagues from Sidley

LONG ISLAND SOUND
TEAM SINK OR SWIM
Team Sink or Swim is a family of all ages
who have been participating in Swim
Across America for 5 years. This year, our
team will be “Paddling Across the Sound”
as we sim in memory of those that passed
and in honor of those fighting.
TEAM TRANSPLANT
(Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
Center) will participate for its 12th
summer. Despite CoVID19, we’re
happy to complete our swims virtually
in pools. All contributions will support
research ensuring the success of bone
marrow and stem cell transplantation
in curing patients with cancers of the
blood and bone marrow
TEAM SCARSDALE FIGHTS CANCER
Sadly, the Long Island Sound Swim won’t
take place this year due to Covid-19. However,
we can still swim, bike, run, or just fundraise
on our own and so that’s what we will do. Just
because there’s a global pandemic doesn’t
mean that cancer is taking a break. In our
lifetime, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be
diagnosed with cancer. We joined the Swim
Across America community so that, together,
we can change that. Swim Across America
has made so much progress over the past
27 years. We will continue the effort!

TEAM ALICE
Team Alice embarks on their 30th year of
participation in Swim Across America events
and we look forward to doing our own swim
later this month in memory of Alice Caserta who
lost her 18 month long battle with lung cancer.
We continue to swim and fight for a cure to
the horrible disease and this year we are also
swimming in honor of our brother Mike who is
fighting prostate cancer and brother Pat who
has survived his surgery for lung cancer.
TEAM AMAZING GRACE
Team Amazing Grace was formed to honor Grace
Bunke who battled osteosarcoma, an aggressive
form of bone cancer, for nearly four years. Grace
never let the cancer stop her. Not even when her
cancer came back in her lungs requiring a third lung
surgery. Not even when she enrolled in a clinical
immunotherapy trial. Not even when her cancer
returned again in her spines and lungs where she
was told that there was no cure. Not even as she was
dying. Sadly, on March 25, 2018, Grace took her last
breath on this earth. She was 14 years old. Grace
believed that hope has no finish line.
LONG ISLAND SOUND
TEAM CAPTAIN JACK’S CREW
Swim Across America is a day of
thanks for our own health and a day
of honoring team work as an example
of the strength of family and friends
working together towards a greater
mission. We remember Captain
Jack Betzig and salute Swim Across
America Long Island Sound.
TEAM CHARLIE
Charlie Harris was a member of Swim

years with the past 12 as the Captain of
Team Heritage in Pawley’s Island, South
Carolina. His devotion to Swim Across
America over the years, help to raise tens
of thousands of dollars always giving hope
to those in need. He will be truly missed
for his devotion to give back and his
distinguished records of achievement.
TEAM CLARE/OMA
At some point during each SAA Sound
swim, I think about Clare. How she
dealt with the chemo and radiation,
the fear of surgery, and the sadness
of leaving my friend Michael and their
four children. The distance, the cold,
jelly stings, and lice bites don’t seem
like much when I think about what
Clare and others have faced. Hoping
one day we beat cancer.

TEAM DIDI
Didi lost her year long battle with
cancer in November, 1997, at the age
of 36. Her friends and family still miss
Didi dearly. We know that she would
be proud of our efforts to keep her
energetic spirit alive through Swim
Across America.
TEAM INGER It’s hard to think of someone whose
TEAM KELLY life has not been affected by cancer
in some way. That is why we swim,
to honor our mother, but to also
honor and support all those whose
lives have been affected but this
disease. Until a cure is found we’ll
keep fighting the good fight.
We will keep swimming.
Swimming brings me peace and
takes me home to the town where
I grew up. To honor my Dad, who
taught me to swim, at the very beach
we swim into. Humbled and grateful
to be able to use my healthy body
to honor and raise money for those
whose health cancer has stripped
away. Never going to stop until
someday I can’t.
