SERVICE ABOVE SELF

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of
worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the
worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business,
and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace
through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal

of service.

AVENUES OF SERVICE

We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of
Service, which are the foundation of club activity.

CLUB SERVICE focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong
relationships and an active membership development plan.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their
expertise to the problems and needs of society.

COMMUNITY SERVICE encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of
life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and
understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on
international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.

YOUTH SERVICE recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young
professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact,
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.

AREAS OF FOCUS

PROMOTING PEACE Filipinos in the hundreds of thousand are displaced by armed
conflict or persecution. We develop the skills to strengthen peace efforts, train local
leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and support long-term peace building in
areas affected by conflict.

FIGHTING DISEASE Millions of Filipinos are pushed deeper into poverty because of
medical costs. We aim to improve and expand access to low-cost and free health
care in our community. We educate and mobilize communities to help prevent the
spread of major diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and dengue.

PROVIDING CLEAN WATER In Marikina and nearby areas, poor communities lack access
to adequate sanitation facilities. Our projects give communities the ability to develop
and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems.

SAVING MOTHERS AND CHILDREN In poor areas, children suffer malnutrition, poor health
care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide preventive care
to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health
care providers for mothers and their children. We empower the local community to
take ownership of health care training programs.

SUPPORTING EDUCATION There are thousands of children in our community with no
access to education. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to
support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and
increase adult literacy.

GROWING LOCAL ECONOMIES We still face grinding poverty in our communities. We carry
out service projects that enhance economic and community development and
develop opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. We also help
strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in
impoverished communities.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Great President Enrico “Ricky” S. Bautista

Greetings to all for the start of Rotary Year 2017-18!

After months of planning, negotiating, and budgeting while having fun with
fellow Hilltoppers, it all comes to this night. Now it is the implementing
stage of all the plans.

In the coming months, we are to implement the service projects. These
projects are for some just a repetition of previous projects except for one
where we adopt modern technology. But we ask “why repeat the same
previous projects”? The answer lies because we still have the same
nagging social problems that have been in existing for decades.

The target recipients of our projects will still be the poorest of the poor,
who we can assume has been growing in numbers. They will, I think, stay
disadvantaged maski na sinong politician yan.

The projects will start small in coverage this year but as we gain
experience through the coming years, we can make the coverage bigger.
For example, on the scholarship project, President-Elect Charlie will start
small, say initially, three students. The approach will be a little different
and hopefully, we can come out with a program that will entice our donors
to support this project.

So I enjoin everyone, Rotarians, Spouses and your children: extend your
time, talents and useful resources to help our less advantaged members of
our society. “We are to apply our vocational expertise, service, and
leadership to tackle some of the world’s greatest (and nagging)
challenges.” To add “while enjoying and having fun in ROTARY”.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

Recruitment of new members is a major thrust of our club for this Rotary Year. We
BEG everyone to please help us in this endeavor. For starters, we suggest the
following easy steps:

Think of 3 prospects for possible recruitment.

1. List down their names, addresses (if possible) and their contact details on a
piece of paper.

2. Then submit the piece of paper to the Membership Committee Chair (that’s me)
in our next club meeting.

3. Finally, be ready to join us should the club officers decide to make a house/
office call on your prospect.

SCHOLARSHIP CORNER

Club President Ricky, Public Image Chair Chuck, PP Vik, Rotaractor President
Kevin and I went to the Marikina Polytechnic College (MPC) last June June 29,
2017 for a courtesy call on MPC President, Dr. Joselito B. Gutierrez, PhD. Aside
from discussing a possible scholarship deal between the school and our club,
we also discussed the possibility of Dr. Gutierrez - who was formerly with the
Rotary Club of Makati - becoming a member of the Rotary Club of Marikina
Hilltop.

EASY NOTES

Carlos “Chuck” S. Manansala, Editor-In-Chief

Hello, fellow Hilltoppers!

I am once again the editor in chief of our club bulletin. With your support, we can
continue to make this bulletin a space for information, knowledge, fellowship, and
fun. This is the first issue of Echoes volume 29. Here is how we will allocate
space:

• The regular columns are President’s Message by President Ricky Bautista,

Secretary’s Corner by Secretary/President-Elect Charlie Bite, and Easy Notes by
Editor in Chief Chuck Manansala. We will publish these columns with every
issue of Echoes.

• The other content of Echoes includes Rotary Information, Club Activities,

Calendar of Events and Meetings, Birthdays of Members and Spouses,
Wedding Anniversary of Members, Jokes, Mind Games, Rosters of Officers and
Directors, Past Presidents, and Members with the Attendance Report. We still
have the space for advertisements, program for the next meeting, and the make
up card. Beginning this volume, we will publish the Hilltop Club Anthem.

For those who have regular columns and anyone who submits an article or a
photo, here are some guidelines:

• Any member can submit an article or photo on any relevant matter of interest

to Rotarians and prospective members.

• Compose your article in Word. Select size A4. Use the font Roboto, 11 points.

You can download the font from Google or you can contact Ellaine for a copy.

• Do not use abbreviations. For example, write Past President instead of PP

followed by the full name of the person. The next instance you mention the
person, just use nicknames. Hence, “Past President Rodolfo ‘Rudy’ C. Garcia
belted out a song. Rudy, of course, is our club’s own Frank Sinatra.”

• Keep your column or article to at least 325 words to fit the space reserved for a

page in Echoes. If you need more space, keep your column to 685 words.

• Always caption a photo you submit. Get into the habit of telling a story through

captions instead of long articles.

Enjoy Echoes!

VALEDICTORY SPEECH

All Star President Viktor Varua
24 June 2017

There is a column in the Rotary Magazine titled My Rotary
Moment. In it various Rotarians recount their most significant
moment in Rotary many of which are about events during their
term in office as President, District Governor, or RI Director.

On the 6th of this same month during my birthday 10 years ago,
four of of my closest friends and I were gathered together , not

to celebrate my natal date, but instead to pray in an ICU ante room in Makati Med for the
recovery of our dear buddy Harvey who suffered from ruptured brain aneurysm. He passed
away an hour later. He did not survive the procedure administered even if we offered fervent
intense prayers. He was 32. We were devastated.

On the 14th of January this year, I found myself similarly seated in a pre-operating room being
told that my spouse, Mayleen, had not one but four brain aneurysms and was being prepared
for immediate neurosurgery. Deja Vu? No, it was the moment of truth. Is it fair to all
concerned? Will it bring goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
All these questions ran across my mind as I was trying to understand what it meant that my
world was threatening to turn upside down, except for the serendipitous fact that the man in
front of me explaining in simple terms was none other than my club’s Service Project
Director, Dr. Alfred Tan, who also happened to be head of Neurosurgery in UERM and Past
President of Philippine College of Surgeons.

Dr. Tan spoke of the delicateness of the procedure in the way that all doctors spoke softly
and in a calming manner. Be he also spoke in the way we as Hilltoppers spoke to each other,
reassuring that we were there for each other serving above self. When we invoked Creation to
join in to lead the task at hand it felt so at home, like everything was unfolding like it should,
as designed by the Hand above moving in the service of its creation.

14 Hours later, Mayleen was wheeled back to the room seated in a wheelchair, bandages
over her head, drain dangling and with the all too familiar glower, as if to say, I look
ridiculous, why am I in a surgical gown- never mind that she just survived nine hours of
complex neurosurgery. Well wishes poured in from all over. Hilltoppers banded together on
Past President Ros Ramos’ call to drum up support - Tito Ed, Dra. Arlene, Ricky, Charlie, Olet
visited. Past Presidents Celso, Tady, Cito, and many others anonymously sent financial
support. It was like one big coordinated service project where I experienced being both the
benefactor and recipient. It was there I had the epiphany of a Holistic Rotary Moment. Every
moment living as part of something beyond self is a Rotary Moment. All the Rotary Moments
together form the Rotary Experience. Ending my term as All Star President many tease me
that I must be overcome by relief now that my duties are over. Yes, it’s true, but more than
anything it is the feeling of thankfulness. Thankful to Hilltoppers, thankful to my All Star
Classmates, thankful to my spouse Mayleen (especially Dr. Tan), thankful to the Above for
giving this opportunity to serve, be served, continue serving and have all these Rotary
Moments form into my Rotary Experience. God bless my beloved Hilltoppers and to Incoming
President Ricky onward to making a difference!
