KNOW ROTARY
Rotary was almost fourteen years old when Leon J. Lambert, then one of the
leading businessmen of Manila and president of Lambert Sales Co., inspired by
what he had heard of Rotary, started to correspond with President John Poole of
the International Association of Rotary Clubs, now known as Rotary International.
As a result, on January 12, 1919, Lambert entertained Rotarian Roger D. Pinneo, a
member of the Rotary Club of Seattle who had been sent to Manila with a
commission to assist in the organization of Rotary Clubs in the Far East, at a
luncheon in his home in Pasay with Messrs. E. E. Elser, James Geary, A. W. Beam
and F. N. Berry, prominent businessmen of Manila.
The five constituted themselves into a committee to proceed with the preliminary
steps incident to the organization of a Rotary club. Lambert was elected as
chairman, and Berry as secretary of this committee. Informal meetings were held
on January 14, 16, and 24, before the organization of the new club was completed
with 38 charter members, two of whom were Filipinos (Gabriel Lao and Gregorio
Nieva, one was Chinese (Alfonso SyCip), and the rest Americans.
A provisional board of directors was formed and served until June 1919, when the
first annual meeting was held. Elected as the first officers were -LEON J.
LAMBERT, President ; ALFONSO SYCIP, Vice-President; E. E. ELSER, Secretary;
WALTER A. BEAM, Treasurer
Before the end of January 1919, a cablegram was sent to the International
Association of Rotary Clubs in Chicago, advising it of the formal organization of
the Rotary Club of Manila (RCM), the first club in Asia, with a membership of 38.
The first office of the RCM was located in the office of the Benguet Consolidated
Mining Co. at Kneedler Building, where further meetings were held and additional
members elected.
The Charter No. 478 was not granted however until June 1, 1919. The first regular
weekly meeting was held on Wednesday, January 29, 1919 at the Manila Hotel. At
the second luncheon meeting it was decided to change the weekly meeting days
from Wednesday to Thursday, and this has remained in effect since that time. The
Manila Hotel continued to be the meeting venue until 1971, when the Manila Hilton
became the new meeting place. In July 1984, the club returned to Manila Hotel.
During World War II all the clubs in the Philippines ceased to function. The last
meeting of RCM was held on the island of Corregidor on May 6, 1942, to induct
Gen. Douglas MacArthur as honorary member. However, some Manila Rotarians
occasionally met in groups, whenever possible. The club was formally reorganized
on September 13, 1945, with Gil J. Puyat reassuming the club presidency.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Great President Enrico “Ricky” S. Bautista
Membership: This is a call for new members. We need at least 5 new members.
Entrepreneurship Night
We are having an Entrepreneurship Night on Friday, November 10, 2017. I moved
the date from November 3 to November 10 so we all can enjoy the extended
Holidays from October 31 to November 4.
The objective of the program is to promote entrepreneurship across all sectors of
our community. It will be conducted like a talk show. Our 1st featured speaker is
Past President Bobby Leung who is a very successful entrepreneur. He will share
his experiences: how he started, the challenges he faced, and his insights on how
to succeed. Past President Chuck Manansala will be the talk show host.
Rotarians, spouses, Rotaractors and prospective Rotarians are invited to this
exciting event. Hopefully, in the end, we may inspire the attendees to become
entrepreneurs. As planned, the series will feature four Rotarians invited as guest
speakers. The venue will be announced soon.
Coffee Project
Inline with entrepreneurship promotion and project fundraising, we will be
launching coffee bags for give away before Christmas.
Past Presidents Chuck, Bobby, Vik and yours truly met last Tuesday, October 17 at
Bobby’s residence. Bobby solicited the services of his daughter Therese of Leung
+ De Leon Marketing Services to help us design a logo sticker for our coffee bags.
The logo will incorporate the brand name that wins the “Name That Coffee”
contest. So give a name suggestion until October 28.
Soon, we will accept orders once we iron out some kinks. Bobby, an avid coffee
drinker like me, has placed an order for his Christmas giveaways. On this Friday’s
meeting, we will be tasting the chosen Barako blend. We welcome constructive
criticism from among us brothers and sisters on the coffee blend. Chuck will assist
us what to look out for (parameters) to enjoy our future blend.
Scholarship
We will meet again with Marikina Central’s Great President (GP) Ron de la Paz and
his spouse on Sunday, October 22 at 3 pm at my house after the bowling
tournament. President Elect Charlie Bite, Past President Ros Ramos, Service
5 Rotary: Making A Difference Vol. 29 No. 08
Projects Director Alfred Tan, and Chuck are welcome to join. Other Rotarians are
invited as well to observe and comment.
Discussions will center on how to conduct the classes for teaching and preparing
the students to speak English properly during a job interview. We plan to conduct
3 to 4 classes in Marikina Polytechnic Colleges (MPC) with about 20-25 students
attending.
The wife of GP Ron is an English teacher and they will prepare the curriculum and
Bio data of the teachers by this Sunday. We will set the meeting soonest with the
president of Marikina Polytechnic Colleges (MPC) for schedules and venue.

SECRETARY’S REPORT
Secretary/President Elect Charlie G. Bite
At the Regular Meeting of the Rotary Club of Marikina
Hilltop held on October 5, 2017 at the Monte Vista Subdivision Clubhouse,
Industrial Valley Complex, Marikina City, the following were discussed:
Club President Ricky Bautista congratulated the members of the Marikina
Hilltop Bowling Team for being the champion in the recently held District
3800 Assistant Governor’s Cup. He reminded the bowlers that the
tournament will have a 2nd leg which will be held on October 22, 2017.
---o---
Pres. Ricky then gave an update on the Solar Lighting project in Antipolo.
He said that a Memorandum of Agreement is already being drawn up, and
added that solar lights will soon be installed, weather permitting.
---o---
Pres. Ricky also announced that the club is embarking on a fund-raising
coffee project. He said that he and Past President Chuck Manansala
already touched base with a coffee roaster from Batangas who has agreed
to make an exclusive blend for the Rotary Club of Marikina Hilltop. The
coffee has no name yet, so a contest was started to “name that coffee”.
Members were to submit proposed names to a panel of judges who will
choose the winning entry. The prize would be P1,000.00 that will be
credited to the dues of the winning member.
---o---
During the meeting, PP Chuck also introduced an amendment to the
proceedings of the meeting. Instead of the usual fining moment, where
members are fined for infractions, he introduced the concept of happy
moment, were club members are supposed to “willingly” contribute
7 Rotary: Making A Difference Vol. 29 No. 08
whenever a happy event/occasion happens to them. Contributors for the
evening were Pres Ricky, Past President Mar Betic, and Past President
Serge Mendoza who were all October birthday celebrants. They will go
down in club history as the first happy moment donors.
---o---
Thereafter, Pres. Ricky emphasized to the members the need to recruit
new members. On the basis of the current membership, vis-à-vis the
mandate of Rotary International, Marikina Hilltop has to recruit at least 7
new members for this Rotary year.
---o---
Pres. Ricky also informed that the district will hold an Oktoberfest at the
Metrowalk in Pasig on October 21. He announced that 10 club members
can join him for the said drinking spree.
---o---
Pres. Ricky informed the club that the next regular meeting is going to be
“Entrepreneur Night”. The club will have a seasoned entrepreneur as
“speaker” who will share his knowledge and talk about his experiences.
Rotarians, spouses, and Rotaractors have been invited to join.
---o---
Pres. Ricky also mentioned that he is looking into the possibility of hosting
Rotary 103 which is part of a series of seminars conducted by the district
to help new (and even long time) members understand and gain more
knowledge about the Rotary.
---o---
Finally, the Rotary Spouses announced that they are going to have a
project also, the visiting of the elderly. Details, however, are still being
worked out.
