sometimes he said, “You guys aren’t
ready yet.” For example, there was no
discussion about doing a digital Yoda in
The Phantom Menace when we started
making the film. George felt that the
character was too precious, as did I, quite
frankly. I would have freaked out if I’d
been asked to do Yoda for The Phantom
Menace. But in learning everything
we learned on that movie—and seeing
what we could do in terms of building,
rigging, rendering, and performing the
characters—that’s how I got to a place
where I suggested to George that we
do a digital Yoda for all his scenes in
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002).
Initially, it was going to be a puppet
for acting scenes, but for the fi ght with
Count Dooku Yoda was going to be fully
digital. George’s concern at the time was
that we had not yet demonstrated to
him we could do that; that as animators,
we didn’t possess the acting skills to
imbue our creations with the same level
of performance delivered by the puppets
and actors.
